This is a super easy read filled with things the believer has heard many times before, but presented in a really refreshing way.

The greatest insight comes in the idea that many Christians live with a ‘mixed-covenant theology’ in which we fear retribution from God while also clinging to the Gospel. (pg 123)

I recommend this to anyone who struggles to believe the goodness of the gospel. If you are living with guilt or shame because of your sin, this is for you!

My only complaint is that the author uses the NKJV and commits a few minor exegetical mistakes in taking verses out of context or over-applying them outside the original intended meaning. (Ex: ‘One-Meaning Fallacy’ applied to the term ‘flesh’ on pg 75)

This book is a light and fairly easy read and recommended for anyone struggling with legalism or an oppressive church environment or background where righteousness is misrepresented as an "earned" temporary state that must be constantly re-achieved by following a rule book of moralistic socio-cultural expectations. Richards helps us to understand that we have been given a free, unmerited state of total and permanent righteousness and peace with God in Jesus Christ. Once we stop constantly living in the fear and anxiety of trying to "earn" a righteous state before God, we can be free to live a life of peace with God and sanctification that is empowered by grace through the Holy Spirit. Reading this book will take a load off of your shoulders and heart, and allow you to realize just how much Jesus truly accomplished for us on the cross.
