Barnaby Skye, along with his wives, agrees to take a Quaker missionary, Dr.William Penn Sitgreaves, his wife Abigail who accompanies him reluctantly, and his party, to Owen's Fort in the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana, where the Quakers intend to begin a mission to the Indians. The Skyes discover that Dr. Sitgreaves, far from being a soft man, has a backbone of steel, and it takes steel to found a mission in the wilds.
Seriously one of the best "western genre" books I have read. Wheeler knows the west, the horses, the trappers, the tribes, and has a pure concept of the landscape. Clean language, except for Victoria's "son of a bitch" and "god damn" and no gratuitive sex. Reading at its best.
The legendary Mr Skye and his 2 Indian wives agree to guide Quaker missionaries to a remote Montana outpost in 1853. Jawbone, his evil horse added spice.
i don't know how many times i have read this series. but i believe this is the best one. i was never a big fan of westerns until my father gave me these to read when i was about twelve. there's a very big love among the characters. "mister" skye, his horse & his two american indian wives. a family of guides, they lead travelers across the rocky mountains to the west. all the while trying to keep their own family safe, those whom they are guiding, & keeping the Comanches at bay. most loved book series!
