Could there be more than one Eyeshield 21? A player on a rival team claims he met the real Eyeshield 21 while he was an exchange student in America. Back then, this mysterious other Eyeshield was on the Notre Dame feeder school football team. But now he's in Japan, and he's going to play during the fall season!
He is a mangaka from Tokyo, Japan. He debuted in October 2001 with Nandodemo Roku Gatsu Jū San Hi, and also wrote for the magazine Square Freeze and Love Love Santa, published in November 2001 and in February 2002 respectively. He later moved to Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump, in wich he won the 7th "Story King" section in the same year.
Eyeshield 21: Who is the Real Eyeshield 21? continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (107–115) of the on-going manga series.
Shun Kakei of the Kyoshin Poseidon football team meets Sena Kobayakawa under the Eyeshield 21 persona, and says he is not the real Eyeshield 21, whom he has met in the United States. Sena Kobayakawa feels uncomfortable with this, but during a barbecue, Seijuro Shin from the Ojo White Knights encourages him.
The next day the Deimon Devil Bats win their match against the Dokubari Scorpions by 42–0. In the eighth-finals, the Zokugaku Chameleons give up in the middle of their match against Kyoshin Poseidon, and so the two will meet in the quarterfinals.
Afterward, Sena Kobayakawa, Monta, and Daikichi Komusubi heads to the school of the Kyoshin Poseidon, where Kengo Mizumachi tells them the meeting between Eyeshield and Shun Kakei. He says Eyeshield disappeared from the US and that Shun Kakei returned to search for him in Japan.
Kengo Mizumachi also says Daikichi Komusubi is no match for him because of the height difference, and this makes him run away from home. After the Devil Bats find him, he is convinced to return. He then regains his confidence when he defeats a taller opponent and is the winner of a sumo tournament.
This tankōbon is written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. For the most part, I really liked the story and the progression of the story. It was known from the beginning that Sena Kobayakawa was not the first or the only Eyeshield 21 and it is rather nice to get some history of this mysterious player and those that wore the mantle.
All in all, Eyeshield 21: Who is the Real Eyeshield 21? is a wonderful continuation to a new series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
We're fast-forwarding through the tournament to get to a matchup that actually matters. The Scorpions match was kind of neat, another way to show Hiruma mind-gaming everyone else with goofy tricks. Some stuff with Komusubi at the end, as well, who has been rather one-note as a tiny and less verbal Kurita, so it's good to flesh him out.
I'm not sure how to deal with the 'twist' that is so obviously stated in this volume's title. It makes sense for Hiruma's manipulations, but I never felt like "Eyeshield 21" ever meant anything other than a fake name. Now it's about... what? Stolen valour? Another thing for Sena to feel insecure about? I will say that it's given the series some sort of plot other than "we want to win the sports tournament" so maybe it will pay off in the long run.
3 Estrellas ☆☆☆ Que encantador tomo.
Good volume - kind of an interstitial setting up the next big match with the Poseidons - will Eyeshield 21 ever tire of the "tall guys looking down on short athletes" plot device? No. The answer...is no.
I am absolutely obsessed with when kurita is drawn like a shriveled wrinkly onion he's so fucking cute. Also the collage of potential Eyeshield 21s that Sena imagines is so funny lol The Kid and Banba are insane guesses
On a less fun and cute note chapter 110 ripped my whole fucking dick off again. Godddddddd... I do have the criticism that I like the Poseidons a lot but I think Deimon vs Zokugaku would've hit way harder narratively... but that scene with Rui confronting Hiruma is so fucking good that idek anymore
The third round of the Fall Tournament is here. The Bats play the Scorpions who have a star linebacker capable of easily reading quarterbacks. Luckily for the Devilbats, Hiruma is an insane, pshychotic quarterback is uses too much deception to predict. The Bat's easily win, but I enjoyed the head Scorpions linebacker's ability to read the QB (very important in actual football). Elsewhere the Gunman continued their offensive dominance over a skateboard football team? Ok, I could see why there. The White Knights beat the Samurai in the B block, and finally the Poseidon team destroys old Devilbat rivals the Chameleons with their superior tall linemen. An interesting development is that the fraud of Sena as Eyeshield 21 comes to light. Apparently there is a real Eyeshield 21 who actually attended Notre Dame and is back in Japan playing in the tournament. The volume ends with the quarterfinal match between the Poseidon and the Devilbat team about to begin. So much football in this volume, and a rather interesting story development with a real star Americanized player somewhere in the tournament. The next volume looks like it's going to feature a big important game for the Devilbats. No more squash matches I hope. 4 stars as this series stars heating up again.
As Deimon advances in the ranks and looks forward to their game with the Poseidons, winners emerge through the other clashes on the field. And when another player carrying the name Eyeshield 21--apparently Hiruma's inspiration for using that title for Sena--appears in these games playing in Japan again, everyone is confused about what's going on.
The games are exciting--way more exciting than I generally find actual football to be--and though the appearance of another Eyeshield 21 seemed a little cheesy to me, it still added some mystery to the series. The Poseidon members continue to be jerks--Kakei is a brooding, threatening, angry form of jerk, and Mizumachi is a dismissive, boisterous, carefree jerk. When you see the sorts of things they say about underestimating Deimon, you know they're being set up for a fall, but you still want to see it happen.
This is pretty much just detailing the outcomes of the sweet 16 games . . . Deimon's still in, unsurprisingly, but there were some surprising defeats. Those Kyoshin guys are kind of jerks.
