Eyeshield 21: The Demons vs. the Gods of the Sea continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (116–124) of the on-going manga series.

The tankōbon opens with the match between Deimon Devil Bats and Kyoshin Poseidon. Daikichi Komusubi (Deimon Devil Bats) beats Kengo Mizumachi (Kyoshin Poseidon), surprising him with a start dash. However, in all other attempts Kengo Mizumachi overcomes him by using his longer arms. When Daikichi Komusubi's parents arrive, his father advises him to use his arm strength and he does so to beat Kengo Mizumachi.

However, Sena Kobayakawa cannot pass through Shun Kakei alone and the Poseidon leads by 7–0. So the Devil Bats use the wishbone formation with Yoichi Hiruma, Monta, Tetsuo Ishimaru, and Sena Kobayakawa – the four run together, and when a defender tackles one of them they pass the ball to another person.

Doing this, they score a touchdown and the game is now 7–6 by the end of the first half. In the return, Shun Kakei realizes how to control the direction of Devil Bat's run by having an apparent hole in the defence, and Kyoshin Poseidon neutralize the Deimon Devil Bat's attacks.

However, as they focus on Deimon's runs and think Monta is the only receiver, Yoichi Hiruma sees an open space to do a long pass to Natsuhiko Taki, who gets it close to the touchdown line. In the next play, Monta runs to make a comeback to 12–10. However, Kyoshin Poseidon scores and when there is only eighteen seconds left and they are winning by 17–12.

This tankōbon is written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. For the most part, I really liked the story and the progression of the story. The match between the Deimon Devil Bats and the Kyoshin Poseidon turned out more interesting than I thought it would be. Having the game meander back and forth, made it rather exciting.

All in all, Eyeshield 21, Vol. 14: The Demons vs. the Gods of the Sea is a wonderful continuation to a new series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

2025 reread:

I've read this volume about 100000 times bc this is the first one I bought at Barnes and Noble when it was brand new... wahhh.... so I remember everything really clearly but I still really love that adorable glittery piglet

This game has super strong aesthetics and Mamori is really cool in it... so many Hiromamo crumbs we're eating so good rn

btw I think the Hiroshis should kiss

This has probably been my favourite match so far. Despite all of the gimmicks, it's a rather straightforward match with the enemy team simply being taller. And I like that the Poseidon team has a story behind them, wanting to take things seriously and win, compared to all the other groups (minus Deimon and Ojo) who seem to exist just to be in a single match then be discarded.

This whole volume is just one giant game and it's amazing. Best game yet, best volume of an already stellar sports manga. It's the Devilbat's offense vs the Poseidon's perfect defense with their tall linemen and linebackers. The game becomes a battle of the impenetrable Poseidon High Wave versus the alternating running backs used by the new Devilbat's wishbone formation. The High Wave is basically a 3-4 defensive formation, which is a first for the series. Both positions changing play formation is another sign this series is slowly getting int more complexities of playing football, even if some aspects are exaggerated a bit.
The game is a neck and neck struggle from the start to finish and ends on a killer cliffhanger with one play remaining. The next volume determines the whole thing. Who goes to the semi-finals. This is the volume that has sold me on investing in the anime series. 5 stars.

Devilbats vs. Poseidons, finally . . . after all the buildup, it's time to break it down. The Poseidons are all tall and godlike, using a technique called the High Wave to stop smaller Deimon from intercepting their passes or getting through. This is not only a battle between devil vs. god, but small vs. tall; you know what they say. Don't underestimate the little guy.

The condescension and mocking from Kyoshin was so maddening--with Kakei seeming practically insulted at the idea of small linemen and other players to Mizumachi's every line basically being "lol ur little," you really root for the little guy (literally!), but you also get to see technique developing mid-game to counteract what the Poseidons are doing. You get invested in the game easily. Read!

More of the tournament! This is getting so exciting. It's weird, because even though I know there'd be very little to draw a manga about if the home team lost, you still really think they're going to lose each time. That's another great thing about this manga--you love the home team partly because they DO sometimes have losses and ties, and they DO have vulnerabilities and defeats, large and small. What a great team. I wish they were real so I could go watch Deimon play. It'd be the first time I'd be interested in watching a football game, let me tell you.

I feel like this is their first real game in a while and it's nice to get some tension back. It's also the first time Mamori purposefully participate in the team's tactic and I love it!!!!
