Eyeshield 21: Dawn of the Time-Out continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (134–142) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon continues with the Tokyo Autumn Tournament beginning with semi-final match between the Deimon Devil Bats and the Seibu Wild Gunmen. The game starts with two kick-off return touchdowns by Riku Kaitani and Sena Kobayakawa respectively. In the play, Daikichi Komusubi stops Riku Kaitani and it is up to the Wild Gunmen's quarterback, Shien "Kid" Mushanokoji, to restart the match.

Yoichi Hiruma tries to blitz Kid but he is not able to stop him. With the bump technique, the Devil Bats are able to stop most receivers, except for Jo Tetsuma, wild receiver of the Wild Gunmen, who scores a touchdown.

The Devil Bats try repeatedly to blitz Kid to the point that it seems Yoichi Hiruma lost control. However, his plan was to force Kid to throw the ball even faster to do a zone blitz. However, Kid surprises him, by not passing this time and scores a touchdown by himself.

Meanwhile in the hospital, Musashi's father and his co-workers motivate him to return to play football. He arrives just in time to score a field goal in the last play of the first half with a score of 29–9 in favour of the Wild Gunmen.

When the second half starts, Sena Kobayakawa advances just a few yards each down going through the centre with Ryokan Kurita's help.

This tankōbon is written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. For the most part, I really liked the story and the progression of the story. The semi-finals have begun and the Seibu Wild Gunmen seem to be a formidable opponent, but the arrival of Gen "Musashi" Takekura seems to turn things around.

All in all, Eyeshield 21: Dawn of the Time-Out is a wonderful continuation to a new series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

2025 reread:

my favorite match in the whole series bc:
- The Kid, Hiruma, and Jumonji are my top 3 characters and I ate sooooo good this volume, they all get to do a lot of cool shit here
-the chapter 125 cover is gorgeous
- little db finally makes his debut
- Hiruma calls the Kid "little doggy"
- it's been going on for a while but Hiruma and the Kid have absolutely insane chemistry lmao... not necessarily in a shipping way (unless..... eyes emoji.....) they're just electric together
- I looooove when they use the Hah bros delinquency skills for football lmao
- chapter 139 is bonkers bc that trick is so good and yet!!!!! I live for the Kid vs Hiruma battles... 10.0 motherquake etc etc
- I absolutely love the Kid and Tetsuma backstory... they're sooooo cute and I love Kid's gifted child trauma... (side note: his family has to come from generational wealth or something right bc there's no way doing such a niche olympic sport is earning anyone that kind of money lmao)
- Kotaro is back and is so fucking cool and insane lmaooooo his dedication to saving the devilbats family... my baby angel...
- chapter 141 made me cry lmao FUCK it gets me so bad... Musashi..... waughhhhhhhhhh

tbh.... I think this is my favorite volume

¡Cuanta intensidad! Auguro cosas malas.

Are we really sure the solution to our problems is "punch them really hard"? Both in football and in family, punching is how problems are solved this volume. Screw it, it's enough payoff. And a rather conceivable mid-match power-up, instead of blindly reaching some new pinnacle of power, this volume really has "let's eliminate a weakness, and up our mental game". Sure, more believable than anything else this series has done recently.

This one owns - really feels like the series is in the zone now. The Wild Gunmen have been built up so well for so long they feel like a real juggernaut and are written as such - the long fabled return of Musashi happens and it's as impactful and emotional as you could ever want - great volume. THIS IS SPORTS MANGA BAYBEEEE

The Gunmen versus the Devilbats in the Tokyo tournament semi-final match. Basically a game played on four important fronts; Monta against precise route runner Tetsuma, on receiving, Hiruma against Shien quarterbacking, Kurita versus Ushijima on the offensive/defensive lines, and Sena running against Riku. Some crazy football here from the start. Both teams score kickoff return touchdowns, and then the scoring doesn't stop from there. Ushijima uses some questionable linemen tactics (lariats? Really? You can't clothsline people in football as much as I wish you could), and Shien's quick draw passing from the shotgun leaves almost no time to be blitzed...that is until Hiruma and Kurita unleash their new zone outside man blitz, and even that fails to hit the Seibu QB.
The biggest fight is between the running backs. Riku Rodeo Drive reminds me of the classic power back like your Adrian Peterson or Eddie Lacey. Sena is your more agile juke and cut back like a MJD or Reggie Bush. With Seibu outscoring them 2:1 the Devilbats need to find a way to catch up before the game is over.
Incredible football in this volume cover to cover, which I assume will conclude next volume. Good defensive game, and interesting characters in a bunch of different positions. Rarely is shonen manga this good for me, and for my first sports manga I'm addicted at this point.

Now it's time for the Deimon Devilbats to fight the Seibu Wild Gunmen. Kid, cowboy quarterback and quick-draw extraordinaire, has some tricks up his sleeves, but Hiruma knows what they are and it's just a matter of forcing him to reveal them. Meanwhile the catchers and running backs are butting heads, with Seibu always a step ahead, just a little stronger, just a little more experienced, just a little smoother. And what's more, they don't have the disadvantage Deimon has: a team without a kicker. Now it seems Deimon is doomed. Will they find a way to get around their kicking issue, or is there someone out there who can help them?

Riku vs. Sena is thrilling, but I enjoyed Kid vs. Hiruma more. (Well, I generally always enjoy Hiruma.) What I really like about Kid is that he is actually quite a master tactician himself, and Hiruma is blatant and in-your-face with his tricks while Kid really likes to keep his abilities on the down-low unless he really needs them. There was a building despair throughout this volume, though: on three individual tracks (quarterback vs. quarterback, running back vs. running back, receiver vs. receiver), Deimon keeps getting infuriatingly trounced. It'd be nice if a certain Musashi could appear on the field about now. . . .

Yay, new one out. Man, those Seibu guys are something else. I really liked how Hiruma forced the Kid to reveal his super-speed throwing by coming in on his blind side! Such a great tactician. Too bad Kid still outsmarted him in some ways. I feel bad, though, watching Deimon get their asses handed to them in those important duels between the mastermind quarterbacks, the star receivers, and (of course) the running backs. . . . :o
