Volume 19 covers a number of topics: the bowling segment concludes, Tezuka leaves for Kyushu, Oishi motivates the team, and matches with Midoriyama begin. A little rushed, none of the topics are expanded on much - almost none of the Midoriyama matches are shown, instead offering a sidebar between Ryoma's father and the father of his opponent, tennis players who knew each other when they were younger (and Ryoma's father banishes all potential seriousness by announcing that children are their parents' toys). Oishi's idea to motivate Momo, Kaido, and Ryoma by comparing them to Tezuka is fun, but all of it leaves me wanting more: I want to see more of the characters' inner thoughts!

The random reintroduction of reporter Saori seemed unnecessary; Sakuno, Tomo, and Coach Ryuzaki also make their every-few-volume appearance in this installment. Due to the insane number of characters, it's tough to develop any one (or few) of them. Despite this, the diverse content of this volume makes it a quick - but fun - read.

The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 19 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (159–167) of the on-going manga series.

The first third of the tankōbon dealt with Kunimitsu Tezuka leaving to Kyūshū Region to treat his shoulder and to convalesce, which leaves Shūichirō Ōishi, the vice-captain to lead the team. The team promises Tezuka that they would head to Nationals for him, but first they had to get through the Quarterfinals of the Kantō Regional Tournament.

Surprisingly, the rest of the tankōbon breezes through the quarterfinals. While built up to be a tough team, Midoriyama Junior High, but was quickly taken by Seishun Academy. All the regulars are second-years and have three specialist coaches. However, their arrogance caused them to take Seigaku too lightly and caused them to lose three matches in a row.

Seishun Academy advances to the semifinals along with Rokkaku Middle School, Rikkaidai Junior High School, and Fudōmine Middle School, which was quite a surprise.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takeshi Konomi. The Quarterfinals of the Kantō Regional Tournament has finally concluded and Seishun Academy properly trounced Midoriyama Junior High as that particular round was finished within a tankōbon. It was quite a surprise that Konomi decided to breeze through this round, focusing mainly on the Inui-Kaidō match to established Midoriyama's general attitude and barely glanced at the Kikumaru-Momoshiro and Echizen matches.

All in all, The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 19 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

My reason for reading the manga version after having watched the anime is to see the finer details not adapted in the anime. Instead of going to GErmany for rehabilitation, Tezuka went to Kyuushuu. Some chapters in this volume was changed in the anime. Instead of Seigaku's match with Josei Shounan as seen in the anime, they had a match with Midoriyama. In canon, Josei Shounan was defeated by Midoriyama...

Anyway, yay to finer details! XD

5/5 (Review is for the series as a whole and does not contain spoilers)

This series follows 7th grader Ryoma Echizen as he strives to become the number one tennis player at his junior high school. Throughout the series, Ryoma faces off against numerous opponents, each one stronger than the last, in an effort to help lead his tennis team to becoming the champions of the National Tennis Tournament.

This series is a cute, action packed story about some junior high school students playing tennis. No prior knowledge of tennis is necessary, as the author takes the time to explain how certain shots are executed and briefly mentions which professional tennis players may use those shots. As the story progresses, some of the tennis shots get a bit more unrealistic and overly dramatic, but it adds to the excitement and builds tension. (So note that if you are an avid tennis player, it might seem a bit out there in terms of realism.) This is a great series for people who enjoy sports manga, and who enjoy competition, as the boys in this manga continue to push each other to new heights in their skills. There are also some good lessons in the story that teach the readers about having fun and continuing to persevere even when things get tough. It also teaches readers that sometimes we lose, and that’s okay too. In terms of age ratings, I would say that this series is a safe one for those in middle school, or perhaps even a bit younger. Overall, I really enjoyed this manga for its low stakes, fun action, and enjoyable cast of characters.

What a ending!!!!

I have to say this is one of my favorite in the series! Yes, I’m a big fan of Seishun Academy. But seeing Fudomine winning the 4th slot was amazing! This book was all about the second round matches. I love the bowling side story. Laughing my butt off when the players had to drank Sadaharu Inui’s drink. Body all over the place after drinking it! You know it’s bad when Inui didn’t wanted to drink it! I also like when Fudomine and St Rudolph came over for some practice plays. Unlike the anime Seishun play against Midoriyama in the manga. In the anime they played Josei Shonan. Interesting how 2 professional tennis players’ sons played each other and have a very different outlook of the tennis. One is carefree and the other is very serious! You can guess which one is Echizen.

Instead of focusing only on Seishun Academy, we get to see the last 4th teams to the Quarter final. Which is Fudomine (underdog) and Seishun’s rival Yamabuki. Read the manga if you wanted to know who the 4th team going to the national!
Rikkai University and Rokkaku advanced to the the National with Seishun Academy.
I really love this series! The anime series is awesome!
I brought all the 42 volumes. I wish New Prince of Tennis manga ( The Prince of Tennis II ) was in English!

This is definitely a transitional volume. Kunimitsu leaves (sad, but he's barely participated in matches before this so it doesn't change much), and we speed through some matches. It's good to show how dominant the team can be but there's little substance here.
