This was really exiting volume. Loved the unsanctioned match between Ryoma and Akaya from Rikkai. Also loved the extra story with a little bit of Najiro's history in the US.

Just three days before the finals, Ryoma runs into Rikkai's eighth grade star Akaya and challenges him. The two battle it out: Ryoma achieves a new state and Akaya reveals his red demon eyes, scaring everyone, including his teammate Jackal. While I'm not sure I buy the whole beating everyone in less than fifteen minutes bit, Akaya's demon tennis is a bit reminiscent of Jin's, whose style of play (and character) was rougher and meaner than most. The bonus story at the end is fun and most certainly reveals more about Ryoma's past by divulging more information about his tennis-playing father, Nanjiro.

The short story creates some gaps in the main story, however; Though previous interactions with Nanjiro have shown his lecherous side, having him fondle Rinko in broad daylight in a manga rated "All Ages" seemed unnecessary (though the similarities between her and Sakuno - including the braided hairstyle - amused me).

5/5 (Review is for the series as a whole and does not contain spoilers)

This series follows 7th grader Ryoma Echizen as he strives to become the number one tennis player at his junior high school. Throughout the series, Ryoma faces off against numerous opponents, each one stronger than the last, in an effort to help lead his tennis team to becoming the champions of the National Tennis Tournament.

This series is a cute, action packed story about some junior high school students playing tennis. No prior knowledge of tennis is necessary, as the author takes the time to explain how certain shots are executed and briefly mentions which professional tennis players may use those shots. As the story progresses, some of the tennis shots get a bit more unrealistic and overly dramatic, but it adds to the excitement and builds tension. (So note that if you are an avid tennis player, it might seem a bit out there in terms of realism.) This is a great series for people who enjoy sports manga, and who enjoy competition, as the boys in this manga continue to push each other to new heights in their skills. There are also some good lessons in the story that teach the readers about having fun and continuing to persevere even when things get tough. It also teaches readers that sometimes we lose, and that’s okay too. In terms of age ratings, I would say that this series is a safe one for those in middle school, or perhaps even a bit younger. Overall, I really enjoyed this manga for its low stakes, fun action, and enjoyable cast of characters.

The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 22 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next seven chapters (186–192) of the on-going manga series with a bonus story.

The tankōbon is a transitional one and strays away from the Kantō Regional Tournament. As Seishun Academy is preparing for the finals with Rikkaidai Junior High School, Ryōma Echizen sneaks away to Rikkaidai to challenge Akaya Kirihara.

The match is a brutal one. Kirihara gets serious after the initial serve smacked him in the head as he enters his mode when his eyes turns bloodshot red and plays incredibly violent, by consistently hitting Echizen on his right knee. He takes a formable lead by winning the first four sets. However, just as he was about to injury Echizen’s right knee, he enters his Samurai mode and ends up defeating Kirihara in a presumed 6–4 win.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takeshi Konomi. It is an interesting preview of what the final match between the two schools may become. However, with constant hit to Echizen's right knee, it may be probolematic for his match in the Kantō Regional Tournament.

All in all, The Prince of Tennis, Vol. 22 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
