How can one largely quote the Bible, which I love, and end up with a one-star review? By demonstrating in his version of prayer, single-handedly, why so many men hate church. York's voice comes across as artificial, as if one has to pray in a certain theatrical tone to be heard, and this isn't helped by his heavy reliance on King James English. As if this weren't enough, he is slow, soft reading is accompanied by violins. Mr. York might be amazed to know that God's instructions to be still and know Him in Psalm 46:10 came not with violin music but in spite of roaring waters, breaking shields, breaking spears, and burning chariots. Your grandmother might like this, but I found it an injustice to my God.

Short readings from the bible and prayers mixed with peaceful music. Sound quality is not terrific.

I enjoyed listening to this wonderful collection of biblical and non-biblical prayers through the ages. I was unsure what to expect as I thought it might be a bit dull, but I have been very pleasantly surprised by the captivating combination of words and music. Michael York’s voice, which I’m sure everyone will recognise, is just perfect, as he reads the prayers clearly, with a sense of wonder and reverence, giving great depth to them. The musical accompaniment is very complementary, and there are a couple of tracks with just music, which definitely adds to the whole recording.
It is disappointing in that there are no titles to tell you the names of the prayers. I was able to recognise a few, but it would be helpful to have them read out at the start of each one.
I think it’s a perfect audio, if you need to take time out to de-stress at the end of a hard day, and focus on God. Thanks to christianaudio.com’s Reviewers Program for this copy

A selection of prayers from St. Francis of Assisi to Psalm 23, this audiobook combines the reading of these prayers by Michael York with the original music by Michael Hoppe. It was all too ethereal: the voice in a "holy voice" mode, and the music high on synthesized reverb.

I am grateful for this book, however, for introducing me to John Streeman's prayer:

Prop me up, O Lord,
In all my leaning places.

Open my eyes
That I may see
The sun.

Teach me how, O Lord,
To fill my empty spaces,
By reading out
Before this day is done.

Lift me high, O Lord,
And maybe in the lifting
I will learn how to lift
My fellowman.
