Pastor and popular author Adam Hamilton offers 40 days of devotions enabling us to pause, reflect, dig deeper, and emerge changed forever. The devotions, ideal for use in Lent or any other time of the year, include Scripture, reflection on the events of Jesus’ final day, stories from Hamilton’s own ministry, and prayer. The devotions can be used alone or as a companion to Hamilton’s best-selling book, 24 Hours that Changed the World.
In 24 Hours that Changed the World, Hamilton takes readers on a Lenten journey to relive the one day in history that changed everything. He invites both readers and viewers to experience and understand the significance of Jesus’ final hours. Drawing on insights from history, archaeology, geography, and the Bible, Hamilton takes us to the Holy Land and provides a deeper understanding of the most amazing day in history. We visit the sites where those earth-shaking events took place, and we walk where Jesus walked along the road that led to the pain and triumph of the cross. This book helps you consider the context of the last day of Christ's life. In 7 chapters, the author lays out the emotions, the actions, the symbolism and the impact of the day. I read this as part of a Lenten Study series at my church. If you really think about the last day of Christ's life on earth, and how he felt, how the disciples and followers felt, how his mother felt, etc., then this is a good guide. Instead of just plowing through the story and making intellectual points or spiritual points only....it really tries to make you pause and think about what was going on. It asks you to put yourself in the shoes of different witnesses to what happened. How easy it is for us now to judge the disciples as cowards for running from the garden and leaving Jesus to be arrested and taken away. But how many of us would have been as brave as Peter to actually enter the courtyard and risk being identified? Yes, he denied Jesus three times to save himself, but wouldn't we have when considering the alternative?
Pretty good explanation but a bit repetitive. Needed a better editor. I do like the 4 Atonement theories. I had never heard it explained, so it was a beneficial read.
Using this as a group study for the season of Lent put us in the crowd that made the journey to Jerusalem and took us through the resurrection. Excellent resource.
I love this book. Adam Hamilton writes as if he is a friend telling u a story while he sits next to u on the couch. I read it all in three says vise 40. O can't wait to read the book now
This is a 40-day devotional companion book to Hamilton's book 24 Hours That Changed the World, meant to be begun on the first day of Lent, however, it would fit any time period.
I used this along with the main book for a Lenten devotion. I probably could have just read the primary book as they contain nearly all the same material.
