Rate this book
Four hearts, one destiny.

As a merman commander, my responsibilities are protect my people and follow the council's orders. Despite my rank, I’ve never been good at following orders. When we discover Annabelle Portsmouth has the gene we’re looking for, I know we need her. It’s a rare trait that gives her the potential to become a mermaid. But after one look at her, I’d want her even without it. And I’m willing to take down my own men who touch her without permission.

I do what I have to do - I take her from her apartment and bring her under the sea to the domed Veiled City. A world of magic and secrets, where the females have the freedom to choose as many mates as they wish.

I understood my actions would have consequences. My government, like me, doesn’t give second chances. I did it for my nation, and for Annabelle, to let her become her true self.

But now she’s mine.

And I’ll do anything to keep this human. Anything. And I’m keeping this human.

Captured by the Dark Commander is the first of a four books about Annabelle and her guys. It contains darker themes then some of Ellie Pond's other books.

The world building was confusing. Jumping between overwhelming and lacking and back to overwhelming. I had to check if I had started in the middle of a series, things were thrown at me so casually.
The spice is a bit different. There is a huge shortage of mermaids, but the mermen (and men from the servant class) have ample sexual experience with mermaids. However, there's a lot of questionable CNC within the harem, including the handling of 🍆/ obeying orders between "brothers" (not blood related) without any comments.
It sounds like this series could be full of spin-off stories due to the huge world referenced in the first 20% of the book. Unfortunately, I don't think this writing style is for me.

This book scared the gospel out of me. I am a lil vanilla girl that just started reading this book because TikTok aggressively recommended it to me and I wanted some mermaid action.

I would like to say, I did NOT read any summary. I started cold. I regret it. The threesomes made me think the brothers were actually brother-husbands. I was so scared. I was not ready for a fourth to be introduced.

Other than the romance aspect, the world seems SO COOL. Literally would read just to learn more of the lore, but I am a scared Christian girl with tooooo many answers to questions I did not have.

This reverse harem situation, if that’s your thing, I HAVE FOUND YOUR BOOK. if not, STAY AWAY.

I am honestly not sure how I feel about this book. It had a good plot, the characters were likable, and it held my interest. It had mermaids/mermen, kidnapping, spicy scenes - what is not to like?!

However, I felt there was a lot going on and I didn’t always understand what was going on or why things were happening.

Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend!

Oh holy Harold! I loved Annabelle and her cute cuss words. She was a very likable, kind, intelligent character. Her thoughts and emotions were constantly broadcast by the author. It was easy to understand her point of view. Her choices were taken away from her when she was kidnapped and mated by the Dorian merman commander, Nico.

Nico Callis had an intense personality. He was easy to anger. His retribution for perceived slights usually ended with the death of the offender. He brought that intensity into his relationship with Annabelle to the point where he was cruel towards her at times. I don’t think a clear picture of what makes him tick was fully developed by the end of book one. His thoughts were not broadcast as much by the author. He was still a bit of a mystery by the end of part one.

The story ends in a cliffhanger. Annabelle and Nico’s fates are far from settled. Definitely want to see these two get a happy ending. Looking forward to the next story in the series.

Captured by the Dark Commander is the first book of the Dorian Saga that I have been awaiting from Ellie Pond.

Annabelle and the Commander are first introduced in the Enchanted Elements series when she is kidnapped by the Dorians to try and get to the Crown princess of Skyroasia.

This book had non stop action and I loved how Annabelle is an intelligent, Fiesty lady, that keeps her kidnappers on their toes.

I was not disappointed with this book. I stumbled across it when looking into different paranormal romance worlds and fell in love immediately! I then went on to read the entire series in 1 sitting 😅

This author did not come here to play but to slay and slay she did. This book has very mermaid style Beauty and the Beast mixed with a little bit of the chosen one vibes and a wave of romance washing over the whole thing. I will be awaiting the next book eagerly.

Annabelle, the initially human female lead, is studying alone at college over the holidays. When Nico, the primary male mer lead, and his subordinates kidnap her, she’s furious and scared, especially when he bites her and tells her she’ll die if she doesn’t bite him back. Then he advises her she’s going to turn into a mermaid, he’s her mate, and she’ll need to choose at least one other mate. Oh, and that his brother, Holter, another mer male she’s attracted to, is considered genetically inappropriate to be an additional mate. Forced into a situation where she’s got minimal control, Annabelle focuses on gaining as much knowledge as she can to give herself the best chance of escape, whilst attempting to ignore her rampaging mermaid hormones.

Meanwhile, Castor, a third male mer lead and Nico’s best friend, who promised to share a mate with him, is trying to balance his obligations against the upheaval Nico has caused, though he understands better once he meets Annabelle!

This story is quadruple POV, well written, and a fast paced first part of a trilogy that ends in a cliffhanger. I enjoyed Annabelle’s combination of logically angry at her situation and considering how she could get free and home, and her hormonal swings and libido increase. I appreciated that she didn’t just submit to Nico’s demands but plotted against him. I enjoyed Holter’s gentle care for Annabelle and his commitment to both her and Nico, especially his historical antipathy for Castor and I’m curious to see how that works out in the rest of the trilogy. I appreciated Nico’s strategic commitment to improving his species’ situation, even if that was at Annabelle’s expense. I enjoyed the character development and the slow building of the relationships. I found the intimate scenes erotic, though I wasn’t necessarily comfortable with Nico’s initial approaches to Annabelle, and that might be triggering for some. I am genuinely looking forward to the rest of the trilogy because I want to see Castor and Holter and Annabelle relationships resolve. I’m also hoping for some serious Nico grovel.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

New world for me!

This is my first mermen/mermaid book. I do enjoy the shifter world.

Annabelle, Holter, Nico and Castor dive you into a new world of social requirements, a desperate need for a way for their population to survive and how should the FMC feel about being kidnapped!! There is a moment where I thought I’d put the series down but I am happy I powered through.

Without a doubt Holter is my favorite right now. I love Annabelle’s curiosity and willingness to learn.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the world Ellie Pond builds for us!

Captured by the Dark Commander by Ellie Pond is an intoxicating, thrilling start to the Veiled City series, blending elements of fantasy, dark romance, and a rich underwater world that will hook you from the very first page. This book captivated me with its steamy tension, fascinating world-building, and the complex dynamics between the characters.

The story follows Annabelle Portsmouth, a human woman who unknowingly holds the key to becoming a mermaid—something rare and powerful that the merman commander, Lysander, needs. But it’s not just her gene that draws him in—it’s the instant, irresistible connection they share. As a fan of enemies-to-lovers and dark, possessive heroes, I couldn't get enough of Lysander's fierce protectiveness and his willingness to break the rules to claim Annabelle as his own.

Ellie Pond does a fantastic job of creating a world where magic, danger, and secrets abound. The Veiled City, with its domed, submerged setting, is a place of both freedom and tension. I loved the concept of mermaids having the freedom to choose multiple mates, but it also adds an interesting twist of conflict. Lysander’s actions—capturing Annabelle and bringing her to this world against her will—make him a morally gray character, but his devotion and growing love for Annabelle made me understand his choices. The stakes are high, and the consequences of their bond feel real, making it impossible to put the book down.

Annabelle herself is a fantastic heroine—resilient, strong, and willing to fight for her freedom even as she’s drawn into Lysander’s world. The chemistry between them is electric, and I was rooting for them from the start, despite the darker themes of captivity and control. Their emotional journey is one of trust, desire, and discovering their true selves in a world that isn’t what they expected.

The romance is intense, but so is the tension between Lysander, Annabelle, and the political forces at play within the mermaid society. This book left me wanting more—both in terms of the romance and the plot twists. It’s a dark, passionate, and thrilling tale of love, power, and sacrifice that I couldn’t get enough of.

If you're a fan of dark, possessive romance with a touch of fantasy and world-building, Captured by the Dark Commander is the perfect read for you. I'm eager to continue the series and see where Annabelle and her men’s journey takes them. Highly recommended for those who like their romance with a side of mystery, magic, and a dash of danger!.

2.5, round down

I'm afraid I just didn't like this very much. It was basically ok, quality-wise. There were some inconsistency issues that annoyed me, and maybe some instances of wrong character names being used. (I'm not 100% sure about this one, but there were a couple of moments in scenes where I was like, did Pond mean for one of the male characters to be doing that when the other would make a lot more sense?) And several instances (especially in sex scenes) when I just didn't know what was actually happening. But mostly, the issue is that I did not like it.

I understand that it is a dark romance. I understand that the "dark commander" is supposed to be dark. But dark romance is also...you know...a romance. But I neverever feel the spark between Nico and Annabelle. There is one sex scene that is so incredibly unpleasant I honestly thought it was rape. (I mean, the other male stepped in to remind the main male hero that he is supposed to be pleasuring his mate, and he is not.) And none of the other sex scenes felt authentic in any fashion. So, I never liked Nico. In the beginning, I gave him grace, room for character growth, etc. But he had not grown by the end. He remained unchained and unpleasant, and everyone just let him.

I did like Holter and Caster, but they are not the focus here. This book was very much about Nico at the exclusion of the other two men, and it felt wonky and off-kilter because of it. And I liked Annabelle well enough. Her character is inconsistent, but mostly I liked her, and the world seems interesting.

All in all, however, I do not feel the need to continue the series.

Nico is the Dark Commander, big, strong Dorian merman who has been ordered by the governor to kidnap the Skyothasian mermaid princess. Nico is unwilling to obey this order as it will start a war his people cannot fight without terrifying consequences. Nico believes some human women carry DNA that would allow them to become mermaids & hopefully save his race. Annabelle has the right DNA & Nico kidnapped her, there’s a battle with the Skyothasians & a dragon. When escaping the battle Nico gets Annabelle to bite him & he bites her, they must swim under water a long distance & Nico hopes she will change to a mermaid, she can breathe underwater but she can’t fully change. He mates with her, this is forbidden & he knows he will be punished. Holter is a gemina, because there is very few mermaids they have made pod children all male, never to mate, second class soldiers this is Holters fate. He was raised as Nicos brother, they share a father. Holter & Nico love & mate Annabelle. Mermaids can have as many mates as they want but Holter as a gemina can’t protect Annabelle so Nico calls a childhood friend to protect her & become part of her pod (family). Nico is imprisoned & Annabelle is terrified, heartbroken & mad as hell, she will fight to get her mate back come hell or high water, nothing will stop her & her mates. Non stop action, fantastic, spellbinding story, can’t wait for next book.

Mermaid shifters

What a cool concept. I don't think I've ever read a book about mermaid shifters like this. Its an interesting story, although it didn't reel me in the way I thought it would.

I found much the romance of it to be mostly unbelievable. Nico spent time thinking about how much he cares for Belle, but didn't show it all that much.

Belle spends time strategizing, and being horny, but is completely oblivious to the emotions of those around her.

Holter is cool, but very hot and cold for Belle's "own good."

Also, Belle is kidnapped and turned into a mermaid. She's told she has to learn all of these things about society in a few days (including steps and procedures to be done for different peoples depending on rank "Bridgerton style")

I mean, why bother? She wants to leave, and is told she might not be accepted because she was human, but really why bother? She was kidnapped and plans on running away. Who cares if they like you or if you say something wrong, wear the wrong thing or step the wrong way? She doesn't have anything to prove to these people.

On top of it all, I didn't really take a shine to Belle much at all. She's a scientist type of person. Very clinical and stoic, and not very emotional at all. Its just weird.

Its not a bad story, but I just didn't connect with the characters the way I need to in order to love a story.

It definitely has some darker elements but if you read the Enchanted Elements Series you're somewhat familiar with some of the background of the civilizations we are entering.
(If you didn't read Melody's books no worries you don't have to but it was nice to have those references.)
The action in the book starts straight away, but it's not war it's more strategic. The Commander is doing his best to help save his people and avoid war.
Annabelle Portsmouth is a scientist at heart but she's also got the DNA that says she could help save Nico's race.
But neither of these two is exactly in the mood for pleasantries nor do they have the time.
So we begin a very heated back and forth battle between to very different beings with very strong feelings for each other. Let's not also forget that while the Commander might be her mate now females are precious in the Mer Kingdoms and have pods so he will have to share her as well.
There is so much and I can't wait for more. It's smart and well thought out. The characters all have clear parts in Belle's life and goals of their own. It's exciting in every way.

3.5 ⭐️
I haven’t read any mermaid books before, but this one has definitely piqued my interest. The premise of the story is unique, and I’m curious to see how it plays out in other books.

What I liked:
Characters-
They’re all so different from one another, and I actually really liked the different POVs. It was nice being able to see into their mind and understand why they were behaving in certain ways.

World building-
This might be a hot take, but I actually liked how the world building was happening. It felt like we were learning alongside Annabelle, so ya there are gaps and moments of confusion. But that’s also how it was for her as she’s learning about this new world.

Smut-
The different vibes of the guys definitely play into these scenes. You have RH, forbidden love, possessiveness, confidence… a little bit of everything.

What I didn’t love:
Smut-
There are some questionable consent moments that didn’t sit right with me. Especially one of the first ones. Definitely left a bad taste in my mouth for a while.

Pace-
I’m not sure how so much and so little can happen within the same book? Once we’re on the sub, the storyline could drag a bit sometimes.

Tide and Moon…

‘I stand up looking like a crazy person, but I’ve got clothes on. No shoes, though, that would be weird according to bossy pants. If I’m wearing his pants, does that make me bossy pants too? Seriously, I amuse myself. One point for the lonely messed-up childhood. Maybe we both need more hugs and chocolate chip cookies.’

Annabelle is a FMC that I would love to meet in person, after reading Ellie Ponds’ Captured by the Dark Commander. She is brilliant and funny and sassy and deserves to find all the passion she can.

In the Veiled City series, this first book has Belle looking to create a pod of mates that will help her survive as on of the few mermaids, and as the only human turned one. She is captured and mated by the dark commander merman, Nico Callis, who believes is is the only hope for his dome’s future. Belle learns much about her mate and is drawn to him, as well as two other mermen, who I believe we will see in the continuation of this enjoyable series.

My first book with mermen, so I didn't exactly know what to expect.

What have I found:
▪️ well developed world building
▪️complicated social system
▪️ fascinating submarine settings
▪️ adventure
▪️ 3 totally different MMCs
Nico - rough, possesive alpha male. Quite toxic one, most scenes with him left me unease.
Holter - kind, supportive, with hidden strenght, undermined by stereotypes. My heart ached for him, with each bad word he has received.
Castor - most enigmatic one, but seems to be very strategic
▪️ FMC, I liked her. She struggles with Stockholm syndorme, but she is determined to do her best despite her circumstances.
▪️ Romance is an emotional roller coaster, with mixed signals and darker twist. Spice is hot and steamy.
▪️ The story ends with cliffhanger.

The book kept me interested, romance left me bit unease, but I go directly to part 2 to check how the author will develope the characters and plot.

The premise is great, or I wouldn't have picked up the book. It's just executed roughly.

The first few chapters are very choppy and confusing. I'm not new to worldbuilding, I read a lot of fantasy. This was just thrown together, without explaining what was being spoken about.

It felt like being in the middle of a conversation that had already been going on with people you don't know - and then the whole plot of kidnapping the princess was never explained.

I'm still not sure why they wanted to kidnap this other mer-princess. The kidnapping of the human also was not truly explained, as in why was this a side mission but also not a mission? And if this isn't a fated mate thing, then why did the Commander want to take Annabelle?

It was a very choppy and confusing read for the majority. I'll still probably read the rest of the series to find out where it's going and see if the writing smooths out.

Thank you sm to Ellie Pond for sending me a copy to review!

At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy this but after the 50% mark I couldn’t put it down! And after that ending I honestly cannot wait for the next book!

At the start I was really confused but thankfully as soon as it was explained to the FMC I completely understood what was going on. I absolutely love the concept of mates where the female gets to choose rather than fate choosing. It was really refreshing. And of course the spice was amazing!

Overall I would really highly recommend for people looking for a quick and easy fantasy romance which is on the darker side. I will definitely be reading the next book when it comes out. This was nearly a 4 stars but I bumped it down to a 3 just because it took me a little while to get into.

tropes:
- mates (not fated)
- reverse harem
- enemies to lovers

It was good, and I appreciated the FMC seeing her actions for what they were - too fast. I felt a bit like it still needed some more editing. There was a time that Nico flipped her and her knees were pushed into the bed but then he was kissing her and looking into her eyes and doing other things would be quite challenging from behind her. The way sentences would jump around made it confusing to figure out what someone was doing, where they were looking, or how they got there. it also got a bit confusing as to who was talking at certain times. I did kind of hate how she instantly liked Castor, knowing why she was being introduced to him. I wish there was more resistance to be in line with how she felt about the whole thing. Overall though, I will be reading book 2 because it was enjoyable.

While I’m always down for merfolk lore, I struggled with this one a bit. The writing wasn’t consistent — the world-building was thorough and enjoyable, but the character development was lacking. I understand wanting to ensure Annabelle was hesitant to go along with this unexpected change in her life, but the way it was done didn’t work for me. She wants to escape, runs away, and then immediately wants to go back to save the dude who forcibly mated her? It was all over the place. Nico was also hot and cold with seemingly minimal interest in anything other than fixing his people’s problem until suddenly he was interested in Annabelle without telling her. It all happened a bit too fast and a bit too slow, if that makes any sense. Holter is a sweetheart. I will continue reading the series because I bought it and because I think the writing will get better.

In general, I enjoy stories about merpeople. I really liked this one, as it's action packed, a page turner, original, and steamy (++)!  I've read several books by Ellie Pond, enjoying every one. They all have entertaining plots, great world building, and an easy-to-read writing style; this book did not disappoint. It is filled with fascinating characters that are three dimensional and believable, as well as a world I would love to visit (but not live in!) Warning: it ends on a cliffhanger! I'm dying to read the next book in the series and see what happens to Annabelle in the new world she's forced to navigate.

Four stars might seem like a lot, and in truth, maybe it is, but I just simply really enjoyed this one. It was fairly well-written, the characters were deep enough, and the world was interesting. The plot was developed to bolster the spice, for sure (I’d give this a 5/5 🌶️ rating) but if I’m being honest I found the lore around mermaid culture in this universe fascinating.

It’s a fun romp - plenty of spicy scenes, but also fun characters and interesting world building!

Do check trigger warnings before diving into this one, though. Here are some of the potential triggers I noticed:

TW: non-consent, kidnapping, breeding kink, multiple partners, abuse, discussion of domestic violence, possessiveness, thalassophobia, murder & violence, war

It was like being caught in a riptide; I was pulled in right from page 1.

Note - this is darker than the Enchanted Elements series. Ellie Pond always has a way of weaving in thoughtful questions through what her characters are dealing with. As such, this book brings the deeper questions to the surface.

A human turned mermaid without consent (big no-no) now has to navigate the waters of her human beliefs, her evolving self, the Dorians, and where she belongs in the world. Conflicting cultural differences, self evolution, and “save a nation or your self?” are just some of the themes brought above the waves.

Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Highly Recommended Read!

OMG! That’s my last thoughts on the last sentence of the book! I simply cannot wait for the next in the series. I feel October is too far away!

What a read, so emotional, so much going on I cannot tell you how infatuated I am with the storyline.

The steamy moments can light the pages of the story and the characters are simply amazing, each personality jumps out at you and you can’t help but fall in love with them.

Although it ends on a cliffhanger for me this is a highly recommended read!.

I love Ellie Pond’s work and this book is no exceptIon.
You get sucked into the story straight away.
Annabelle is a workaholic. She meets three strange men but one stands out above the rest. This meeting changes her life and before she knows it she has been brought into a strange new world.
Annabelle is lonely, stubborn, clever and caring.
Nico is tough, stubborn, and deep down is a marshmallow for Annabelle.
Holter wants something he can never have. He is eloquent, savvy, caring and dotes on Annabelle.
This is only the beginning of the story but you can see that there any many facets at play. There is much more to discover and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
