Geoff Thompson is a BAFTA-winning writer, filmmaker, spiritual teacher, and martial artist with a prolific career spanning multiple disciplines. He has authored books on self-help, spirituality, self-defense, and martial arts, while also writing for film and stage.
Beginning as a martial artist, Thompson specialized in reality-based self-defense, drawing from his experiences as a nightclub doorman. He co-founded the British Combat Association and taught seminars internationally, including for Chuck Norris. His self-defense innovations include "The Wall" and "The Fence," practical techniques for real-world confrontations.
His transition into filmmaking brought critical acclaim. His short film Bouncer (2002), starring Ray Winstone, earned a BAFTA nomination, and Brown Paper Bag (2003), inspired by his brother’s struggles with alcoholism, won the BAFTA for Best Short Film. He later wrote the feature Clubbed (2008), based on his autobiography Watch My Back, as well as The Pyramid Texts (2015) and Romans (2017), starring Orlando Bloom.
Beyond martial arts and filmmaking, Thompson has established himself as a spiritual teacher and self-help author. His works, including The Divine CEO and Live Your Dreams, focus on personal transformation and overcoming fear. He has delivered a TED Talk on conquering fear and hosted a popular podcast on spiritual growth.
In 2020, he released his autobiography Notes from a Factory Floor, chronicling his journey from factory worker to internationally recognized author and teacher. Through his writing, coaching, and filmmaking, Thompson continues to inspire others in the pursuit of self-improvement and personal mastery.

This is an absolutely brilliant book. If you're serious about self-defence then this book is a must read. Full of interesting and thought provoking material, it will make you pay attention and watch how people move and react. It will challenge you to analyse your martial art and explore what will and will not work in the street. It may even make you go and find a martial art that is suited to you personnally.

Focus on one thing

I really got a lot out of this book. Geoff’s strategy of keeping it simple and focused will become the focal point of my self defense strategy. Bruce Lee said “I fear not the man that had practiced 10,000 kicks one tone each. I fear the man that has practiced 1 kick 10,000 times.” You’ve got to listen to a man with as much real life experience as Geoff.

the author was a bouncer and has advice based on his experiences. most tough guys are in it for a sucker punch. they will provoke and then sucker punch you after a series of escalations. it may be best to be pre-emptive. hit first and then run away in case his mates or police come after you.

Down to earth techniques on how to defend yourself, the legal bit may be outdated now, states that the best way to win is to strike first.

Awareness

A very good read that gives you a reality check but with simple strategies to practice. Easy to read and leaves you much food for thought. Thanks Geoff.

Not exceptionally well written, but it does an adequate job describing attackers' common ploys and strategies and provides good justification for a preemptive strike.

Along with Animal day this book and the video that covered the subject too was a big influence in my Karate/Martial arts back in the 1990's and early 2000's
