Stan and Jan Berenstain (often called The Berenstains) were American writers and illustrators best known for creating the children's book series the Berenstain Bears. Their son Mike Berenstain joined them as a creative team in the late 1980s.
Another in what could be termed as the "Papa Bear is an Idiot" series. *shakes head* Sometimes I really don't like these as I think that while meant to be funny, the fact that Papa Bear is so clueless sometimes feeds into the current media trope of the "stupid male" too much.
In this particular book, Papa Bear wakes up and finds his special honey is missing, but there are several clues. Rather than ask the owl (as Mama suggests) he and the cubs go on a wild chase to find the culprit, doing untold amounts of vandalism that really isn't funny at all to the store owners who are going to find a huge mess. (and while you get the idea that Papa is going to have to pay to clean it up, the point is, throwing money at the problem really makes no difference in the long run - you shouldn't be destroying other people's property to begin with).
And of course Mama Bear was right all along. Much chagrin on the part of Papa Bear. At least the cubs had a good adventure?
Sorry, can't get behind this one. While there's some humorous aspects to the story, this isn't the one I'd want to see my own kids playing out in the house after having it read to them.
I liked all the Berenstain Bears' books but I really liked this one a lot. It is not overly wordy like some of their books and is written in rhyming verse, making it really fun. It flows really nicely when you read it out loud. Also, it is a detective story that lends another element of fun. They call in Cousin Fred and his dog, Snuff, to help solve the mystery. Finally, the illustrations are bright and fun as usual. This one is a winner. The kids and I loved it!
This was a Little Free Library find and is the classic Berenstain Bear story about Papa's missing honey. When Papa's blackberry honey goes missing, the whole family including Cousin Fred and Snuff the dog follow the clues in search of the culprit. After a few missteps, it is a wise Owl that provides eyewitness testimony about what happen helping to solve the case. Readers will enjoy trying to figure out the mystery.
4.5 stars A highly biased rating because of nostalgia. This is legitimately a fun story though. The illustrations are very well-done, and the rhyming is a simple but nice touch. Papa Bear is still a buffoon, but not annoyingly so. The mystery is very simple, but a good one for little kids. Definitely one of the better Berenstain books.
Me and my younger sister (age 6) really enjoyed this book. We are huge Berenstain bears fans so it was a little obvious to us that Papa would end up being the one who ate the honey but it was still really cute. 9/10 would recommend, for all ages!

Yes it is cute. But I can see why we put these away. Though not sure why we kept them. Papa Bear basically being a nuisance. Not a thing I enjoy reading nor something I'd want my kids reading over and over.
Well this is not my favorite, yet I found it funny when my son decided I needed to start sleep walking. Ps trying to explain sleep walking to a 4 year old is not something I enjoy.
In The Berenstain Bears and the Missing Honey Papa Bears blackberry honey goes missing. Brother and Sister Bear call in cousin Fred with his hound and detective gear to help find it. Papa bear and the hound begin finding clues and they could of asked the owl if it wasn't sleeping. A smell brought them all the way to the fanciest shop in town where Papa and hound made a mess. They looked at all the shops in town making many messes along the way, including the candle shop. Then they find a shirt that matched their clue, Grizzly Gran was the next culprit. They found the real match to their clue it was Papa's shirt and the owl had all the detail. Papa was sleep walking and took it himself.
I really enjoyed the book. I really got carried away and heard the voices from the television show as I was reading it was almost as if I was in the book. Seeing the television show really helped my imagination go with the book, I always had a hard time falling into books, but this was one fun read.
I would have this on my classroom book shelf for an individual read. Have the students write reports or answer questions I may have to guess who stole the honey and see if they were correct. I think this would just be a really fun individual read and a mystery they could try and solve with the characters. Or read out loud to the students and make an activity where they would be detectives and would have to find and define site words I may pick out from the book.
Summary: Papa Bear is worried when he discovers his honey is gone! The Berenstain Bear Detectives are on the search for some clues that will lead to the culprit. Even Papa Bear is willing to help find his honey.
Lesson Integration: This book is written in rhyme, thus it could be used to reinforce rhyming words. It also shows clues in the illustrations of what happened to Papa's honey, and the students could use these to make predictions of what they think occurred.
I gave this book a five star rating because this book is part of series that includes talking bears and is well written. In this book in particular the bears are going on an adventure to find the missing honey.

In this story the Brother and Sister put on their thinking caps (and detective gear) to help Papa find his special honey. The cubs follow the clues and solve the mystery. A great book to use when discussing problem solving.
The rhyming ones aren't my favorite, but I like this one; it's fun and silly (like Papa Bear insisting he doesn't care if the thief is his own mother). Some of the rhymes don't flow terribly great, but overall, I appreciate the sense of humor of this one.
