Spirou and Fantasio's friend, the Count of Champignac, asks them to join him in Australia, where he has heard that an ancient monolith is still standing. When they arrive, Champignac's colleague Walker Donahue informs them that Champignac has been abducted by local gangster Sam. The monolith they're after stands in the vicinity of an aboriginal mining village, which is constantly prey to white prospectors trying to steal indigenous resources. Spirou and Fantasio must save Champignac from Sam's clutches and help him find the legendary monolith while standing by the aboriginal people.

Né le 24 février 1957 à Bruxelles, Philippe Vandevelde, dit Tome, découvre la bande dessinée à l'âge de cinq ans. Momentanément aveuglé par une opération aux yeux, sa maman lui fait la lecture d'albums qui le marquent profondément comme Le sceptre d'Ottokar et Les extraordinaires aventures de Corentin Feldoë. Quelques années plus tard, le jeune garçon se délecte des albums de "Gil Jourdan" de Maurice Tillieux. À l'âge de quatorze ans, il participe au fanzine Buck, puis s'inscrit à des cours du soir de bande dessinée où il fait deux rencontres essentielles : celles de Janry et de Stéphane De Becker. Appelé au service militaire, Philippe passe quelques mois en Allemagne et, s'inscrivant dans la tradition familiale, signe pour deux ans d'engagement comme officier. Sous les drapeaux, il fait la connaissance d'André Geerts. Les deux hommes sympathisent et cette rencontre achève de convaincre Philippe de devenir professionnel de la bande dessinée. De retour à la vie civile, il retrouve son ami Janry qui est entre temps devenu l'assistant de Dupa. Le duo reformé va ponctuellement prêter main forte à Turk et De Groot. C'est à ce moment que Philippe opte pour la signature de Tome et que son association avec Janry passe à la vitesse supérieure, lorsqu'ils sont choisis pour reprendre les aventures de "Spirou et Fantasio". En 1984, paraît leur premier album Virus, qui est très chaleureusement accueilli par les lecteurs. En 1987, Tome, fasciné par la ville de New York, imagine "Soda", une série policière mêlant action et humour. La même année, Tome & Janry imaginent les histoires du "Petit Spirou". Tout en cultivant son talent pour le gag, Tome développe une veine réaliste et dramatique qui déteint sur leur ultime album de "Spirou et Fantasio", Machine qui rêve. Depuis lors, Tome poursuit avec fantaisie son best-seller absolu "Le Petit Spirou" et relance en 2015 "Soda", avec Dan au dessin.

En compagnie de Janry, Tome a réalisé près de trente albums de "Spirou" (petit ou grand), mettant son imagination au service du groom le plus célèbre de la bande dessinée. On lui doit également des albums réalistes au goût américain tels que "Soda" ou "Berceuse Assassine". Tome nous a malheureusement quittés le 5 octobre 2019. Il laisse un vide irremplaçable dans la famille Dupuis.

Robbedoes en Kwabbernoot reizen naar Australië waar hun vriend Van Rommelgem een archeologische schat gevonden heeft. Deze ligt echter in een mijnbouwgebied, waar een gangster, Sam de haai, de plak zwaait. Van Rommelgem wordt ontvoerd, en zijn assistent wordt bijna vermoord, maar net op tijd zijn Robbedoes en Kwabbernoot er bij. Ondertussen zijn de Australische inboorlingen op zoek naar een heilige opaal, die per toeval in de schoen van de assistent terecht gekomen is. Als alles uitgelegd is, helpen de inboorlingen onze vrienden om Sam uit te schakelen, en de oude megaliet wordt blootgelegd en zo krijgen de inboorlingen hun land terug.
Tof avontuur!

This is one of the best comic-type stories I've read in a few decades. A great cast of characters, an involved multi-level story and a very good grip of location, all while presenting indigenous history. Though all couched in a fun way. All of this drawn with great skill and outstanding story telling.

This is my first reading a tale with these characters. The writing deftly reveals who the characters as the story unfolds. Many novelists can't adequately accomplish the effort, especially these days. The writer also has a large cast of many other characters. These are also distinct in writing. Even better in how all are drawn distinctly.

The story has the main characters doing one thing. Another set doing something else. Still another set doing something even different. Then there are the characters the main characters are meeting. I marvel how all of this is handled and then all comes together. All in 52 pages.

The ending also has layers as there seems to be one...and then another...and then another. I love how this is done!

This is an outstanding effort and I look forward to reading more.

Bottom line: i recommend this book. 10 out of 10 points.

I wasn't impressed at all, as a matter of fact, I found this story to be quite boring.

ظاهراً جلدهای انگلیسی بر اساس توالی نسخۀ اصلی نیست و تصاویر و قصه یک بلوغی داشتند. این اولین جلد از اسپیرو است که خواندم. تصاویر پررنگ‌ولعاب با اغراق‌های خیلی بانمک در همه‌چیز. خود ماشین‌ها و آدم‌ها و ساختمان‌ها هم بانمک هستند. قصه در استرالیا می‌گذرد و جالبیش اینکه بدون هیچ ترسی اتفاقات ماورالطبیعه می‌افتد و همین بخش از بانمکی‌های قصه است. اسپیرو و فانتازیو ویژگی‌های خودشان را دارند و یک سنجاب خیلی بانمک هم همراه‌شان هست. در قصه درگیر یک باند مخفی می‌شوند که دنبال جواهرات هستند و شوخی‌های محتلف تصویری و کلامی کتاب واقعاً بانمک هستند.

Spirou dan Fantasio (dan Spip, tentu saja) bahkan belum sempat ke luar dari bandara di kota mereka setelah perjalanan panjang dari Bangkok. Surat dari seorang teman membuat mereka harus terbang lagi ke Australia. Ada misteri di daerah pertambangan kecil bernama Albuh Mine yang melibatkan suku Aborigin pemilik lahan pertambangan itu.

I reluctantly followed my Cinebook blindfold into a series whose covers convey two males mingling mostly with other men- and was again glad I attended.

It's funny in its goofiness and savvy in its choice and use of setting.

Vue l'époque, ce livre aurait pu être super raciste par accident. Il ne l'est pas. Juste un peu naïf.
Au-delà de ça, les débuts de Tome et Janry avec Spirou (c'est leur deuxième) sont des masterclass de gags d'arrière-plan, de cadrage et de comment dessiner de l'action.

Festligheter down under. Australia blir på mange måter en karakter her. Flyten i historien er veldig god. Mye action, som det gjerne er i Tome og Janry-heftene.

Despite being labeled as volume one, this is clearly not the first story featuring these characters. I'm not sure why this story was picked to be the first translated, but some sort of introduction to the characters should have been included. The story assumes you know who they are and what they're like, and if you don't, the story sufferers for it. Which is why I gave this only two stars, instead of three.

Het verhaal leunt iets te hard op de vraag "is personage X dood?", terwijl je als lezer donders goed weet dat dit niet zo is want X is een hoofdpersonage.

En lijkt de aanwezigheid van Ijzerlijm een goede zaak, dan wordt al snel duidelijk dat ze er voor spek en bonen bij hangt -- tot je op de laatste pagina komt en blijkt dat de auteurs een nog teleurstellender rol voor haar hadden. Bonuspunt: ze is toch al niet de traditionele "damsel in distress".

Spirou and Fantasio have just gotten back from an other adventure when Cellophine tells them they have to go to Australia, that the count has bought some land on a mining site.
Along the way their will be a group of villians trying to stop them and the Kat-Go Tyurtong tribe trying to get there stone back.

Story was a fun read with some humor here and there.
