I enjoy reading DK books even as an adult. A picture is worth a thousand words, and DK books have some of the best pictures of artifacts and locations seen in any book. This book about Religion is very fair with its information on over a dozen of the biggest religions in the world. You can really see how each cultures treats their own traditions with respect and how they put a lot of heart into what they do. I recommend this book to everyone, because it puts things into perspective and makes you appreciate other people for their differences as well as their similarities. The only reason I give it 4 star instead of 5 is that I wish it was longer and went into how many religions are connected.
This book about religion is meant for students between the ages of 9 and 12. I was looking for a basic summary of the major world religions. I was really pleased with the rudimentary explanations and the art/statuary/symbols.
DK books are some of my favorites. They certainly believe in the adage 'a picture is worth a thousand words.' This book is perfect for children and other folks without a deep knowledge of the world's religions. It is interesting to see some religions worship an omnipotent God, while others call to the higher self of the person to be the best person possible.
Here's the rundown on the subjects covered (if page numbers are not listed, it means that subject covered 2 pages): The religious quest (looking for God around the world), Life and death in Egypt, Gods and nature in Greece, The primal vision (ancient religious traditions around the world), Rituals of life (ancient religious traditions around the world), The Hindu way (6 pages), The Buddhist path (6 pages - including 2 about Tibetan Buddhism), Confucian piety, The Tao principle, Shinto harmony, Jain respect for life, Sikh teaching, Zoroastrianism (an ancient religion, particularly from Persia/Iran), The Jewish nation (6 pages), The Christian faith (6 pages), The message of Islam (6 pages).
I took my time reading this book because I wanted to be sure to encapsulate my understanding of each religious tradition by itself. The photos of religious symbols help a reader attach meaning to words and their religious art.
Description: Provides overviews of ancient and modern relgions and in-depth descriptions of many world religions.
Reaction: Beautiful design and plenty of information in easy-to-understand format. The table of contents could be more clear. The language is difficult at times, but the photographs and labels provide details for all reading levels.
This book describes the sacred rituals and artifacts of different world religions. The author Myrtle Langley goes into depth about the holidays of a religion and she even gives a good comparison of the different religions. Myrtle Langley is known for her children books and she included a lot of pictures for children to view. As a teacher I wouldn’t read this book to my class, however I would put this book in a research section in case a child ever had a project on religion. This book gives a great bit of information of world religions and would be perfect for a research project. This picture book covers has a lot of information about Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and other world religions so this is the perfect book to teach about religious backgrounds and diversity.
If a social studies teacher is covering the topic of introducing and comparing various religions, this book would be an excellent way to introduce the topic. The pages are filled with pictures of actual artifacts and short descriptions about each one. This picture book gives an overview of religions such as: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This book would be a great reference book to keep in the classroom to refer to when covering this topic.
OK I know these are supposed to be kid books but they are awesome! Great pictures and just enough text to make you want to learn more. Great choices for a beginning history reader or to start an older reader out in a new area. Every time I pick one of these up and read it I learn new things. Highly Recommended
A complete overview of major religions around the world with animated pics as a showcase for reader to get basic idea about each relegion. Overall, recommend for light reading.
