To out-of-work actress Abby Stevens, helping Charles Bradbury to get his revenge on Lance Lazenby, who had ruined his daughter's life, was just a job to tide her over — though seeing what the Lazenby man had done to poor tragic Sarah Bradbury made her determined to help bring him to justice. But it all backfired on her when she realised that she had fallen in love with Lance — who, she had to keep reminding herself, was utterly without scruples and wouldn't hesitate to ruin her life too, if it suited him!

Backfire is another SW Revenge/Stalker extravaganza and the h does try really, really hard to maintain a small shred of backbone and character but being an out of work actress means that eventually she is going to have to unleash (literally) those golden titian locks and get herself a man or two. What starts out a an acting gig for a supposedly overwrought father whose beloved daughter was comatized by the dastardly H turns in an accelerated application of corporate spying complete with stick-em bugs.

And not kidding, the h gets the H to go for her by taking her hair down in public and the H is drawn like a fly to honey. (You just have to read it I guess) Then she turns the H down for a date, so he starts showing up in his car outside her house when she is supposedly going out with another guy. As a side bonus the h looks just like H's dead fiance, (just to add an extra fillip of squick -I think the DF did the hair schtick to get the H's notice too) and the H eventually works his way closer and closer to pouncing on the h and devouring her --- oh wait wrong story--anyway, the H and h get closer, she starts planting bugs at distraught father/evil bad guy's behest. H finally traps her after dumping a fortune of gems and stuff on her loverly locked head and then almost rape ensues with BIG h face slap from the irky H.

However, this is a SW h and she can hold her own with a leaded ashtray anyday, so h wins that round and leaves her bag but grabs the superfast alpha car keys in yet another eerily reenactment of the previous fiancee's death in a fiery crash and takes off for the Highlands of Scotland -- srry, wrong story again--

Actually the h goes to check out the injured comatized daughter only to learn that the distraught father was really evil bad dude and it was just a generic comatized person in the care home. H finally catches up to her and avows true lurve forever cause h left a care package with a note telling him to flee the country and all the jewelry, plus she has mad lethal ashtray skilz and there aren't too many loverly locked ladies with those attributes just wandering around. And thus an HEA is had by all, and another SW revenge extravaganza is complete.

I swear SW was the greatest con artist of all time - she managed to write 63 HP's and 7 HR's and at least 60 of them HAVE to be romantic parodist satires - I still wake up at night at 3:00 am and wonder about that question. Was she really serious in that book? It has been thirty years of internal debate and I still don't have an answer - I think I have resigned myself to just enjoy the crazy.

3 1/2 stars rounded up. I had to take off a half star because lying makes me nervous and I was nervous for the h the entire time! This is the story of an out-of-work actress who is given an apartment, money, and designer clothes in order to trap the hero in some sort of insider trading scam. The heroine's patron has given her a sob story about how the hero ruined his daughter's life by introducing her to drugs and this is his revenge. The heroine - after seeing the brain dead daughter in a clinic and six weeks of not finding work- believes him and decides to be the honey-trap. The problem is - she falls for the hero while she is giving him a digital (LOL) pen and planting bugs in his office.

**Don't read the spoiler if you're at all interested in the story. Half the fun was not knowing how this was going to "backfire" as the title suggests. **

Eventually the shoe drops, the tables are turned and

There are amazing descriptions of early 80's clothes, nights out on the town and antique jewelry auctions. It's at open library, so everyone can enjoy this vintage bit of fluff.

If you're a fan of SW, jump straight into it. It's one of those best-read-without-knowing-whats-coming book.

But if you need details, (StMargarets and Boogenhagen have great ones) read the book much later on when you've forgotten the reviews.

Heroine is an actress approached by a businessman who wants evidence against the H, who has ruined his daughter by seducing her and introducing her to drugs, out of jealousy to the businessman winning a coveted business deal.

The businessman is convinced that h can succeed where everyone else has failed. Since she is uniquely H's "type" in terms of appearance, he believes H will be enticed enough to reduce his guard, so she can collect information and get proof of his shady dealings.

The h is going through a dry patch in terms of acting gigs so the money is much needed but still, she rejects the proposal outright. Cool because I do like my heroines to be morally upright, questioning people.

But later on after seeing his daughter in a drug treatment facility, she concludes that she could be doing the right thing in helping put behind bars an unscrupulous man.

She reels H in beautifully, using her skills as an actress and her personal experience of how men like the chase of a beautiful woman. This H didn't stand a chance and was besotted almost at first sight.

Of course because this is HP land, we know that nothing is as it seems but what makes this fun is how we are kept guessing on when the H is going to wise up to her.

SW keeps the plot simple, the pace even and builds up to the dramatic showdown. At times the suspense stole a bit of thunder from the romance, but overall, SW doesn't lose sight that it is still a romance novel.

My only quibble is that the heroine kept up the con act a tad too long. I would have preferred more emotional struggles and pricks of conscience, but the h was convinced of his guilt and prolonged the deceit past my comfort zone. But SW wrapped it up so well, it didn't ruin it for me.

For those who need the full scoop: They came through for each other in the end in typical SW style: no prolonged HEA.

Side note: I love how SW never confirms but shows through her behavior that h is probably a virgin though she is no shrinking violet, has healthy relationships with her men friends and no sexual hang-ups. Nicely done.

Highly recommended for SW fans :)

"Backfire" is the story of Abby and Lance.

What a thrilling read!

In this book filled with lies and deceptions, our actress h gets hired by a heartbroken millionaire to entice and destroy the businessman H, who has "wronged" his daughter. As she immerses herself in the role of being a rich heiress, soon sparks began to fly between her and the H, who seems to be totally taken with her.
But as the deceit gets deeper, she is coerced into espionage, a mad love affair, and forced to dupe at every turn. And when the truth shall be revealed, it might not be so easy to leave unhurt..

The cat and mouse chase between the h and H totally made this an engaging read. Their chemistry with each other was sizzling hot, and the underlying tones of pretense vs reality totally keeps us at the edge of our seat.
We know the H knows something, and the h does come off as a tad bit stupid for following the OM's orders blindly, but it's actually the rage/almost rape at the end that made me deduce the 1 star I did. I enjoyed the rest of the book, and I always love a good cry.

Safe..ish

Another day, another revenge plot to be hatched.

This time, the Mills and Boon cover is so much better than the HP cover. Lookit the heroine all held enthralled by the guy, and looking like she could pass for a giraffe with that long neck. Seriously, her neck is the same length as his entire head.

In-Depth Summary
All kidding aside, one has to seriously admire Sally Wentworth for her revenge plots, and this one was no less a doozy. At the start of the book, Abby is just getting off from a play that has totally tanked. She's approached by a posh-looking older man (Charles) who proposes corporate espionage on a totally unscrupulous man (Lance, our hero), who's the rat of the highest order and has done something terrible to his daughter, but Charles won't speak in detail. The pay is terrifically awesome, 1000 pounds for one week's work and 1000 pounds for wardrobe to match, plus additional expenses...and you figure that the amount is worth twice that now.

Abby negates this suspicious-sounding work (she's no fool) and goes off to her own life and auditions for work actress gigs. Over the next few weeks, however, she's getting no hits and one gig was even cancelled right when she thought she had gotten it. When Charles meets up with her again, she reluctantly goes with him to see his daughter, now bedridden at a clinic because of drugs and apparently apathetic to the world. When Abby sees this evidence of Lance's cruelty, she agrees to corporate espionage on this unethical businessman.

First, she arranges with Charles a sighting visit to look over Lance, which happens at a stockholder meeting in which she wears a hat and glasses. Then, she arranges to meet him subtle-like, you see, at a silver auction, since Lance collects silver. She happens to bump into him and mistakes him for one of the auctioneers there. They make small talk, she bids on a bracelet (funded by Charles to uphold her rich background story), he asks her out that evening but she turns him down b/c she has plans. They then meet again at an opera (another of Lance's hobbies) with Abby's good-looking actor friend, Ross, decked out in a rented suit to play Abby's boyfriend. They laugh until Ross, notified of the gig, sees Lance and Abby then lets down her hair, literally, and Lance is taken aback by the sight of Abby's beautiful locks, so like his dead fiancee's.

description

He makes a dead set for Abby, but she's still playing it cool, and she sees she has aroused his predator instincts when she sees his car parked outside her flat on nights she has "dates" with Ross.

Eventually, they start "seeing" each other, and Charles is ecstatic, giving her a bugged fountain pen to give Lance as a gift. Charles gradually ups the ante, but giving her sticker bugs to place in Lance's apartment and office. Eventually Lance is involved in a takeover deal and Charles wants details, so Abby has to find ways inside Lance's office and look for the files. All this time, Lance is seemingly falling for Abby, and Abby is getting more and more frazzled as Lance showers her with gifts and eventually proposes to her. She wants out of the gig, but Charles then informs her she was acting illegally with the bugging devices.

Notes
This book is the reason that I like these old Harlequins. Crazy action-packed plot aside, the lack of a male perspective is actually quite refreshing, because you know they're going to end up together...the mystery is dissecting the moment in which you think the hero has fallen for the heroine. It's like a mystery novel, really.

I think that's the allure of these old-time books. That's the beauty of Austen's books, the attraction of Jane Eyre, the guilty pleasure behind Georgette Heyer. There are oh-so-few moments where the hero expresses his love and the few that there are, are interspersed with glints of coldness or amusement the heroine sees in his face. Is he or is he really falling for her? It's all a mystery. Like in real life, I suppose. You can't know what the other person is thinking. And when you have such few moments of true affectionate candor, those moments can be pored over at length and given more depth than they would otherwise have in a book in which the guy is gaga over the girl from the beginning.

That's why there are entire websites dedicated to Betty Neels. I've read her books before and am not a fan. But the small moments in which the hero thinks to himself, hmm, she's got fine eyes. How is that any different from that moment readers love in Pride and Prejudice? There's no other outward sign of anything. Does he even know she's alive? That living on the edge of the emotional unknown is what is tantalizing about these older books.

Exciting and stunning,"Backfire" forced me to wake up into a whole new world in the romance trope of revenge..i could not put this book down.
I have read many great books by this author, among them my favourites "The Judas Kiss","Cage of Ice" and "Candle in the Wind" and she never cease to amaze me with her eccentric plots that re-news my imagination of perplexing great romance.

Actress Abby Stevens agrees to help a rich businessman avenge the man who destroyed his daughters life, the irresistible Lance Lazenby. But the whole revenge-plan will backfire on her as she will soon fall in love with him against her will.

It was clear that once Abby got to know Lance and fell in love with him-that her heart didn`t believe that Lance was that evil or else her heart wouldn`t have fallen for him. While her mind thought him evil, her heart didn`t.It was also clear that Lance was becoming smitten with her,but the moment she gave him the pen i became suspicious that he knew all along, and i was waiting with horror for the axe to fall.Gosh..how i just hate waiting!

WARNING!(There are a slap-scene and a attempted rape-scene involved)

Let me start by saying that I hate when life happens and interrupts my reading. Especially when it's a reallly good book! And this is a reallly good book!

What I loved most about this book is the level of anticipation that I felt all through to the end. I knew that the backfire was going to happen, but the when and how kept me in edge.

The h was hired by a father who is distraught because a business rival got his daughter hooked on drugs and it turned her into a mindless vegetable. The h is supposed to get the H's secrets so that the father can destroy him in revenge for destroying his daughter.

But things are not always as they seem and the author weaves a wonderfully, suspenseful tale that keeps you engaged, and eagerly turning pages.

I can highly recommend this book. It is on the list as one of my favorite HP's.

The H slaps the h in her face when he tries to rape her. I have read hundreds of HP books. But a H who slaps the h in her face without her slapping him first, I have never read about. That is taking it too far. As if the attempted rape is not enough. The h can escape from the rape only because she knocks him unconscious.

There is nothing romantic about slapping a woman.

Oh boy there is nothing like a Sally Wentworth revenge romance. I just can’t get enough. I never wanted this book to end. The interesting thing is, the H knew what the h was up to all along but was head over heels for her the moment he saw her sleek chestnut locks.

Well if anyone has any revenge romance recommendations, where it is the h getting revenge on the H, please feel free to drop a line.

This is the first book I’ve completed in 2019. I should really be ashamed of myself.

This book is slightly unpleasant. The heroine is hard to like as she is almost always pretending to be someone else (who I did not like), and the hero is half yuppie/half posh and 100% led by his nether regions. Who falls in love with someone for their hair colour alone, even if they are a clone for his dead fiancé (and that's kind of grim too). His hobbies are indicative of his interest rate to me - silver antiquities (rolling my eyes) and a Rolls Royce (that's mentioned a lot of times).
The only positive is at least it was not as bad as Betrayal In Bali.

I really enjoyed this one! Since there are other reviews with a lot of into, I won't bother going into detail, except to say that Ms. Wentworth should have tried to have this made into a TV movie script, it would have been great!

HE WAS MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN SHE'D IMAGINED

Out of work and low on savings, actress Abby Stevens agreed to help Charles Bradbury get his revenge on the man who had ruthlessly ruined his daughter's life. Abby would play the femme fatale.

She had been forewarned that Lance Lazenby was the type of man who would not hesitate to twist an innocent girl's heart around his little finger. Luckily the script did not call for the heroine to fall in love with the villain.

How was Abby to know that her heart would begin acting of its own accord?

It's a good story with lots of emotion but it got a little tedious waiting for the big reveal. It was obvious that he wasn't buying her story.

May 2022. Kept thinking I read this before but was enjoying so kept reading. I upped the rating to four stars because the tension was high, both romantic and for espionage.
