Lois Duncan (born Lois Duncan Steinmetz) was an American writer and novelist, known primarily for her books for children and young adults, in particular (and some times controversially considering her young readership) crime thrillers. Duncan's parents were the noted magazine photographers Lois Steinmetz and Joseph Janney Steinmetz. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but grew up in Sarasota, Florida. Duncan started writing and submitting manuscripts to magazines at the age of ten, and when she was thirteen succeeded in selling her first story.

Duncan attended Duke University from 1952 to 1953 but dropped out, married, and started a family. During this time, she continued to write and publish magazine articles; over the course of her career, she has published more than 300 articles, in magazines such as Ladies' Home Journal, Redbook, McCall's, Good Housekeeping, and Reader's Digest. After her first marriage, which produced three children, ended in divorce, Duncan moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to teach journalism at the University of New Mexico, where she also earned a BA in English in 1977. In 1965 she married Don Arquette, and had two more children with him.

Duncan was best known for her novels of suspense for teenagers. Some of her works have been adapted for the screen, the most famous example being the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer, adapted from her novel of the same title. Other made-for-TV movies include Stranger with My Face, Killing Mr. Griffin, Don't Look Behind You, Summer of Fear and Gallows Hill.

In 1989 the youngest of Duncan's children, Kaitlyn Arquette, was murdered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, under suspicious circumstances. Who Killed My Daughter? relates the facts and conjecture about the still unsolved case.

Duncan's second book about her daughter's murder, ONE TO THE WOLVES: ON THE TRAIL OF A KILLER, picks up where the first book leaves off and contains all the new information Kait's family has uncovered from private investigation.

The 1971 children's book Hotel for Dogs was released as a theatrical movie in 2009, starring Emma Roberts. That book has now been republished by Scholastic along with two sequels, News for Dogs (2009) and Movie for Dogs (2010).

Duncan's Gothic suspense novel, DOWN A DARK HALL, is being filmed for the Big Screen and will probably be released in 2016.

Good book.... a little bit of romance, not horrible, just enough to make it awkward. Andi wrights a book about a dog named Bobby for a contest. She ends up losing to arch enemy. Soon after, she turns the story into a screenplay and she and her brother Bruce turn it into a movie. They end up not winning that also but, get an extra speacial surprise at the end!

I could not get into this. I was tired of Andy whining and being so upset when she got 2nd instead of 1st in a book writing contest. I didn't think the characters very realistic and felt like I was looking into a "Leave it to Beaver" episode. I also didn't like the readers voice, so maybe if I read it in my own voice, it wouldn't be so bad--but no way am I going to waste my time doing that.

I hate Jerry Gordon for doing something illegal ( read yourself to find out )and when they win Hollywoods movie he talks to a girl in his class and tells her to win. I want to slap him really hard for doing that.

This review comes from a 30-something mom of an 8-year-old girl who reads at a 6th-ish grade level.
My whole family listened to this book as an audiobook on a road trip. The plot is cute and certainly convoluted enough to sustain interest. The character of great-Aunt Alice is particularly well-developed and endearing: age + spunk, really well done. The book had a lot of potential. BUT: the author had to fall into the infuriating cultural drivel that infiltrates far too many of our juvenile fiction books. I get that Andi's brother and his friend Kristy are in middle school. But the whole mess about someone's cousin saying she was hot stuff, and maybe if she sent [texted] him her picture she could get him to do something - the author inspired us to have an intense conversation on whom you send pictures to and whom you never send pictures to and why it's a horrible idea. Because you see, Duncan didn't go into why it was a horrible idea. And if we hadn't been listening as a family I wouldn't have been known I needed to have the conversation about it just then.
Another fury-inspiring scene: when Jerry tells Bruce that Andi is a "fat nerd." First, at that point, when the boy isn't responding to any sort of logic, I want to know where my son's fists are, because a bully like that deserves to know that it hurts to be a bully. But that reaction aside, Bruce can barely get a verbal response together. His anger mutes him so Andi mostly has to take care of herself. But in the exchange, he takes a look at his sister and realizes that though she was on the "pudgy" side last year, she's changed this year. And though she's NOT AS SLENDER as [some other girl], she DOESN'T LOOK BAD, in fact, she looks pretty good. Ms. Duncan, this disgusts me. As a mother of two girls whose value will NEVER have anything to do with whether they're quite AS SLENDER AS the next girl, I'm disgusted that a *woman* would write such a scene. I was an overweight teenager, and I remember comments like this hammering home the idea that no boy would ever like me, that I'd never be attractive unless I could be *slender,* that I'd better just get used to myself because no one was going to want to marry me. Appalling. I'd expect better from a seasoned female author. Shame on you.

Inspired by her brother Bruce's struggle to help his abused and neglected dog, Red Rover, get over his past, Andi writes a creative story about it. When she enters it into a contest, however, their neighborhood nemesis and Red Rover's former abusive owner, Jerry Gordon, wins the contest.

Determined to have Red Rover's story heard, Andi and Bruce decide to make it into a film for another contest. Their film soon gets noticed by a Hollywood producer, who wants to take it to the big screen. Jerry, though, is not too keen about his story becoming publicly known - and will stop at nothing to prevent this film from coming into being.

Can Andi and Bruce see their dreams come true for both them and Red Rover, or will Jerry get his way?

MOVIE FOR DOGS is a great book for dog lovers. The characters are well-developed; the plot is well-done and holds the reader's attention well. Those who liked the film or book version of HOTEL FOR DOGS, or who like books with animals, adventure, and realistic fiction, will all enjoy reading this sequel.

This book is called Movie For Dogs by Lois Duncan. The book is about a average girl, named Andi, with a passion about writing. She loves dogs, so she enters for a kid contest that is about dogs. If you win you will have your book published and everyone will know that a child wrote it! You have to read to find out what happens. As the problem in the book is a bully named Jerry Gordon, with his cousin (the older one that's the bad influence) Conner Gordon. They always try to do everything better and win up against Andi, and her brother Bruce. Over all they don't expect it, but may become stars! Andi is an amazing girl that has a talent of writing very well. Bruce is a boy that is Jerry's age. Bruce is a boy who takes his dog on a run, and works hard on what ever he is trying to get done. I would recommend this book to girls and boys no higher then the age of thirteen, and no lower then the age of eight. On a scale from one to ten I would rate this book as a eight because at a couple of parts in the story I was a little bored, but overall it was a really enjoyable book to read.

This is a cute book great for younger readers as well as adults.the story is written with believable and interesting characters. The book was written as her brother struggles to help his rescued, abused and neglected dog (Red Rover). His sister spends the whole summer on it and enters itin a contest she feels she is sure to win. She only wins 2nd place and is upset as her nemesis and sadly Red Rovers former owner came in 1st place. She and her brother decide to make it into a movie. You will have to read this book to see all the obstacles they encounter. It is a sweet book and you will enjoy it. This book was made into the movie Hotel for Dogs. Enjoy your reading.

Cute children's book. I wish that the horrible Jerry would get what's coming to him, though. I'm tired of him always getting off.

This is the third in the series. It's about a book Andi wrote which she hoped would win first prize in a contest. It didn't. It came in second to Jerry's. Then she and her brother decide to make a movie out of it. Jerry also ruins that for them.

We have enjoyed these books SO much. Wish there were more!
The only reason I had to give this book four stars is because a comment towards the end by a teen girl that a boy "got what he wanted from her" and dumped her. I'm glad I was reading this to my kids so I could completely skip that whole part, which was irrelevant to the story. Aside from that, this trilogy was nice and clean for kids.

It is a pretty good book and describes every action taken thoroughly. As the book goes on it gets more interesting and every character brings something to the story.

I feel like I was more anxious reading this book than when reading a lot of books featuring grown-ups! Even though I could predict a lot of the key points (except the part, which seems... inefficient. I guess anything goes to get the plot going?

I also didn't realise it was a sequel to Hotel for Dogs, which I haven't seen. Luckily, this book spoils just enough of the prior books to catch new readers up to speed through Bruce's random reminiscing (which he then wonders why did he think about all of THAT out of nowhere? ha!).

So, some of the main points are terribly predictable, and BECAUSE I could guess what was happening, I didn't want to keep reading, even the good parts. I guess it has to do with the abusive kid (Jerry) who gets away with anything because he's good-looking and charming. People like that rankle me to no end. Sad to say he isn't punished as MUCH as I'd like, but unfortunately there's no way to ever ensure every bad thing is brought to justice. At least show the public censure!

I guess it's decent, objectively. I can't think of anything (other than Jerry) I would change. Kristy's character is great, and I love the part she plays in the story. Also, everyone should have an Aunt Alice! (hopefully one that's not allergic, though)

This is part of the Hotel for Dogs series. Andi writes a story that they they turned into a movie. Of course, after being picked as a finalist, they fly out to California. Here they meet the other award finalist. After they return home, they discover the whole thing is gonna fall apart thanks to you… Jerry!

Genuinely terrible and outdated. Fat shaming the main character out of the blue and just leaving it at that... K... So weird. And if I read the words 'release form' again I'm releasing myself. From life. Clearly just wrote this twenty years after the original because the movie had just come out. This is just a cash grab.

Read this with my 9 year old. We did not read either of the first two books. I found Andi to be completely insufferable. It was painful for me to read this every night.
