Where do you start investigating when every woman in the town has a reason to want the victim dead? Penny May and her bonkers dog, Kali, are settling into the small town of Upper Glenfield, Lincolnshire, England. But secrets are festering behind the net curtains and neat front lawns. When an unpopular local man is found dead in a remote spot, it exposes rifts in more than one family. Penny has been warned to stay out of it. She’s got enough to deal with, anyway; she’s helping the local Camera Club put together a calendar to raise money for the dogs’ home. Photographing excitable dogs is challenging, especially when most of the club members prefer to take shots of trains. The police don’t want Penny to meddle, and Penny doesn’t want to meddle … but the residents of the town have other ideas, and soon she’s juggling far more than a reactive rescue dog and a charity calendar… This is a clean read suitable for all; it’s a standalone novel with no cliffhanger, and the mystery is fair-play and solved. “Some Very English Murders” can be enjoyed in any order but you may prefer to follow them chronologically. This is Book Two.
If you enjoy cozy British Mystery stories, you will like this series of books. A middle aged lady changes her life, acquired a dog and gets involved in her new interests.
I thoroughly enjoyed Book 2 (Book 1 was good, but it was the introduction of all things, etc. This has Penny, Kiki and company ready to go). Book 2's mystery is a bit more difficult to figure out. Some excellent new characters are introduced, I look forward to seeing them again.
I'm on to Book 3 with great hopes that Ms. Brooke will have finished #4 by the time I have finished!
It's really nice to find a series of books that you like and are really excited to tell others about. I have gotten so terribly picky about what I am willing to commit my time too, I hope my reviews make it easier for you to find books that excite you too. >^..^<
A good read to pass the time. Penny and Kali work with the Police to solve another murder in Upper Glenfield. This time is an unpopular member of the community... These stories are well written with good characters and are hard to put down, reading into the small hours is not uncommon with these books. ... I have the 3rd tau to go. ...
I like this series! A clever protagonist, and a fun mutt make for a great little mystery, especially when she's called upon by the local constabulary to help them find the answers to the whodunit. Not your average British mystery, but something of a real gem. Read it, you will love it!
Enjoyed this very much. It's such a change that the protagonist is older than most cosy mystery heroines. I can relate to her a lot better! Looking forward to the next in the series.
I liked this better than the first one. Penny is not as juvenile and Kali is less neurotic. It is hard to believe that the police would ask for a civilian' s help though.
