Keraban, a tobacco dealer, refuses to pay the tax raised by the Sultan to cross the Bosphorus.
Yet, he is obdurate and will get to Instanbul, by any means.
Even if it comes down to trudging all the way around the Black Sea.

I discovered this novel quite late.
The subject is comical and captivating. The Turkish Kéraban does not agree to pay a tax to cross the Bosphorus, so, stubborn as a mule, to pay a modest sum, he decides to go around the Black Sea by other ways.
Of course, there will be plenty of obstacles in their way.
This novel is entertaining.

Yine keyif aldığım bir Jules Verne kitabı oldu.

1883’te Jules Verne’in dilinden Istanbul’dan baslayip alti haftalik bir Karadeniz yolculugundan sonra yine Istanbul da biten bir roman.
Istanbul - Odessa - Kirim- Batum - Trabzon .. yani tüm Karadeniz kiyilarini dolastiktan sonra nihayet Üsküdar
Yazar gercekten Istanbulu ve Karadenizi bu denli gezip kendisi tecrübe etmis midir bilinmiyor ama o kadar detaylar, öyle derin incelemelere yer vermistir ki görmeden nasil böyle hayrete düsmektedir.
Eski Istanbulu, Osmanlı kültürünü, Türk kültürünü öylesine hissettirir ki sanki bir fransizin degil de bu kökenden yetismis bir Türkün kaleminden cikmis gibi.
Kendi kültürümüzü, geleneklerimizi, örf adetlerimizi, Ramazan kültürümüzü bir batilinin hem de böyle kitaplari tüm dünyada okunan bir dünyaca ünlü yazarin anlatmasi cok önemliyken malesef ülkemizde bu kitabin gereken ilgiyi görmemesi cok üzücü..

Voller Überraschungen
Um ehrlich zu sein, ist es nur einem Zufall zu verdanken, daß ich Jules Vernes Roman „Keraban, der Starrkopf“ überhaupt gelesen habe, denn normalerweise lassen mich Vernes Romane eher kalt, vielleicht weil ich weder das Interesse an Technik noch den Fortschrittsdünkel des französischen Autors teile. Doch nach der Lektüre dieses Buches werde ich meine eher gleichgültige Haltung gegenüber Verne vielleicht nochmals überdenken.
Dieser Roman, der aus dem Jahre 1883 datiert, erzählt die Geschichte des türkischen Tabakhändlers Keraban, der ein ausgemachter Dickschädel ist und sich beharrlich allem Neuen verweigert. So würde er niemals auf der Eisenbahn reisen, und auch Telegramme, Dampfschiffe und Absagen an die traditionelle Kleidung wie der Fes sind ihm ein Greuel. Als Keraban in Konstantinopel seinen Freund und Geschäftspartner, den Holländer Jan Van Mitten, der infolge eines Ehestreits vor seiner Gattin in die Türkei geflüchtet ist, zu einem Abendessen in Scutari, dem asiatischen Teil der Stadt, einlädt und gerade mit ihm den Bosporus überqueren will, wird er Zeuge, wie ein Polizist eine neue Steuer verkündet: Jeder, der die Meerenge überqueren will, muß pro Fahrt 20 Para zahlen. Keraban ist empört über diese neue Steuer der ihm verhaßten Jungtürkenregierung und fest entschlossen, dieses Geld nicht zu entrichten. Da er aber an der Seekrankheit leidet, muß er Van Mittens Plan, Scutari über einen Umweg über das Schwarze Meer anzusteuern, verwerfen und kommt auf den Gedanken, den Landweg einzuschlagen, um seinen Landsitz auf dem asiatischen Festland zu erreichen. Daß er dabei viele Wochen unterwegs sein und ein Vielfaches der Steuer ausgeben wird, schert den Dickkopf dabei nicht, und da Van Mitten der Einladung bereits zugesagt hat, muß auch er mit seinem Diener Bruno sich der Reise anschließen, da er nicht das Gebot der Gastfreundschaft verletzen will. Auf der Reise geraten die Männer in allerlei Gefahren und absurde Situationen, und Van Mitten sieht sich zu seinem Entsetzen mit der Aussicht auf eine Zwangsheirat mit einer kurdischen Amazone konfrontiert.
„Keraban, der Starrkopf“ ist ganz sicher kein bedeutendes literarisches Werk und wird auch kaum ein differenziertes und authentisches Bild vom zeitgenössischen Leben in den verschiedenen Schwarzmeerregionen vermitteln, doch besticht es durch seine witzigen Figuren – wie beispielsweise den um seine Leibesfülle besorgten vorlauten Diener Bruno, den händelsüchtigen und starrsinnigen Keraban und den unentschlossenen Van Mitten – sowie durch manch einen kuriosen Einfall des Autors. Man denke beispielsweise an den Vorfall, in dem eine Ziege herausfinden soll, wer des Nachts in das Zimmer der Kurdin Sarabul eingedrungen ist. Auch wurde mir Keraban, der stets bestrebt ist, sich gegen die Neuerungen der Zeiten und gegen die Vernunft seiner Mitreisenden zu stemmen, mit jeder Seite sympathischer, wenngleich – das muß ich zugeben – ich ihn wohl nicht gerne als Reisegefährten gehabt hätte.
„Keraban, der Starrkopf“ zeigt eine ganz andere Seite des Autors Jules Verne und war somit für mich nicht nur sehr gelungene, kurzweilige Unterhaltung, sondern auch eine kleine Überraschung.

Despite a competent plot, serviceable characters and moments of great wit Kéraban-le-Tétu is true waste of time. Verne's great value is that he explains the technological and scientific advances of the 19th century in a way that was engaging to the young reader. Around the World in 80 Days analyzed the impact of steam technology on society. Journey to the Centre of the Earth reviewed the current state of geology. Keraban is nothing but a story.
Keraban the protagonist is the grotesque doppelganger of Phineas Finn. Outraged when he discovers that a 10 Para tax has been levied on anyone wishing to cross the Bosporus which divides the city of Istanabul, he decides to reach his destination by traveling 3500 perimeter of the Black backward from his starting point rather than paying the nominal fee in order to cross the 1 kilometre strait. Unlike Finn whose reckless wager concerns only himself, Keraban's act almost prevents his nephew's fiancée from inheriting in fortune and puts the lives of several people at risk. Unlike Finn who wants to push the new steam technology to its limit, Keraban is a reactionary who refuses to ride any steam powered craft.
The pleasure to be had from the novel comes from the fact that the tyrannical Keraban is in fact a devious, resourceful and ultimately courageous individual. One laughs at his spineless friends and relatives who allow the despotic Keraban to bully them. The humour however is not enough to warrant reading the work.
Verne attempts to educate the reader by providing anecdotes about the cities that Keraban visits. One learns for example that Odessa was named after Ulysses. However, Verne provides only the trivia that a tourist would learn on a cruise about the Black Sea. Verne's most glaring fault is his treatment of the incredibly complex ethnic mosaic of the region. Verne tells the reader which ethnic groups are present in each city visited by Keraban but he makes no effort to describe any of the groups or to examine their relations with their neighbours.
Verne is simply not interested in ethnic and cultural issues. He makes jokes about Muslims fasting during Ramadan, refusing to eat pork and practicing polygamy but makes no serious analysis of the religion. He ignores the fact that several Muslim groups (e.g. Kurds and Turks) are in perpetual conflict but simply groups them all together as Mohemmadans. In one rather bizarre section, Verne has a Muslim brother trying to marry his sister off to a Christian, which is clearly forbidden by Islam. Everywhere Verne resorts to easy jokes and superficial caricatures. Keraban is an extremely shoddy effort by a first rate writer. There are too many worthwhile books in the Verne catalogue for anyone to waste time on this one.

Excellent ! Que dire d'un homme qui, parti boire un café avec ses invites anglais au palais de Topkapi (Constantinople), refuse de retraverser le Bosphore pour rentrer chez lui et entraine ses hôtes dans un périple autour de la mer Noire, et tout ça pourquoi ? Pour ne pas payer une toute nouvelle taxe frappant les voyageurs passant d'une rive a l'autre ! Un de mes Jules Verne préféré ! Kéraban est VRAIMENT têtu !

Komik, maceralı bir romandı. Daha çok İstanbul detayı görmek isterdim lakin yazar tüm romanı mabadınım çapından ayrılmayıp kurguladığı için göremedim.

2025 senesinin ilk Jules Verne kitabını bitirmiş bulunuyorum..
Yeni yılı Jules Verne kitapları ilə açma geleneğini geçen sene başlatmış bulunuyorum. Geçen senenin bitirdiyim ilk kitabı Mişel Strogof idi. Bu sene ise uzun zamandır okumayı istediğim İnatçı Keraban kitabını bitirdim.
Kitap İstanbul ile Üsküdar arasındakı boğaza yeni koyulmuş vergiyi ödememek için Karadeniz turuna çıkan keçi gibi İnatçı ve de zengin tütün tüccarı Keraban ağayı konu alıyor. Yolculukları boyunca yol arkadaşları yeğeni Ahmet, arkadaşı Hollandalı Van Mitten ve onun uşağı Bruno, Keraban ağanın uşağı Nizib ve de yolculuğun ileri aşamallarında onlarla yolculuğa başlayan (Ahmetin nişanlısı) Amasya, Amasyanın yardımcısı Nedime ve Amasyanın babası Banker Selim ile birlikte bir çok Macera yaşarlar. Karadeniz sahilinde birçok Şehir ve Kasabayı geçerler. Kitap benim için adeta kendimin çıkmış olduğum macera dolu bir gezinti oldu neredeyse.
Jules Verne sevenlerin mutlaka kaçırmaması gereken bir kitap olduğunu düşünüyorum.. Herkese kutlu yıllar ve iyi okumalar.

Keraban de stijfhoofdige is een boek, over een oude turk die weigert de belasting (2,5 belgische frank) over de Bosphorus te betalen die geld op elk varend toestel.
Om deze som geld niet te moeten innen maakt hij een reis helemaal rond de Zwarte zee, tot groot ongenoegen van zijn Amsterdamse vriend Jan van Mitten en diens knecht de Bruin aan wie Keraban een feestmaal aan de overkant heeft belooft, zij kunnen hun stijfhoofdige gastheer niets weigeren dus vertrekken zij mee rond de zwarte zee.
Natuurlijk moet Keraban ook terúg over de Bosphorus, naar zijn huis, hiervoor laat hij over de grote stroom een koord spannen en wordt de stijfhoofdige Turk in een rolstoel over het koord gedragen met behulp van een koorddanser.
Het boek is in het oud Nederlands geschreven (bv. mens met SCH i.p.v. S) waar ik de grootste moeite mee heb.

Un capricho del protagonista es el pretexto para un largo periplo alrededor del Mar Negro, sorteando innumerables desventuras. Lo personajes son muy buenos -empezando por el propio Keraban- y abarcan varios tipos del carácter humano; las situaciones están bien construidas, sin que falten la comedia, el romanticismo, el drama y la aventura. Pero claro, como suele ocurrir con los viajes extraordinarios de Verne, el protagonismo lo asumen los paisajes exóticos y sus gentes.

Fue bueno pero creo que Verne quiso repetir la formula de la vuelta al mundo en 80 días pero para su mala fortuna no fue asi. Es un buen libro que básicamente trata de un turco necio que por no pagar un débil impuesto, paga mucho mas al darle la vuelta al mar para llegar a su destino y no pagar al gobierno. La historia del porque un holandés lo acompaña es una de las mas interesantes.

Wow, what a beautiful book. I couldn't put it down. A must read for whoever wants to get lost in a trip around the Black Sea with Jules Verne's characters: three Turks and two Dutchmen. Excellent!

Habe die Hörbuch-Version mit "Ben Kingsley" gehört. Die ist etwas modernisiert und dennoch stur konservativ. Hat mir sehr gut gefallen.

İnatçı Keraban, okuduğum en keyifli kitaplardan biri olabilir. Aslında ben Jules Verne'e biraz ön yargılı yaklaşan biriyim çünkü çok fazla macera okumayı sevmiyorum. Ancak bu kitabı Storytel'de dinledim ve bu maceraya bayıldım!
Bu kitap Osmanlı İstanbul'unda geçiyor. II.Mahmud döneminde. Keraban adında zengin ama çok inaçı bir adam hikayenin başrolünde. Keraban o kada inatçı ki boğazı geçmesi için belirlenen 10 parayı vermemek için bir sürü para harcayarak Karadeniz'in etrafını dolaşmaya kalkan biri. Bu sırada Keraban'ın yeğeni Ahmet ise Banker Selim'in kızı Amasya ile en kısa sürede evlenmeli çünkü Amasya ancak evlendiği takdirde ona büyük bir miras kalacak. Bu sırada hikayemizde Amasya'yı kaçırmaya çalışanlar ve Keraban'ın dostu Hollandalı Van Mitten de var.
Kitap boyunca Keraban'ın yuh bu kadar da olmaz diyeceğimiz bir sürü inatçılığına şahit oluyoruz. Ayrıca Jules Verne Türkiye'ye hiç gelmemiş olmasına rağmen Türkiye coğrafyasını iyi tanıyor belli ki. Kitap boyunca eh be o kadarını da bilemezsin artık dediğim bir ton ayrıntı var.
Tabii Jules Verne, tipik bir Avrupalı olarak Türklere oryantalist bakış açısıyla da yaklaşıyor zaman zaman ancak bu anormal seviyede değil. Jules Verne'in Türklere yaklaşımına sevimli bile denebilir.
Kitabı geçen hafta dışarıda kar yağarken dinlemeye başlamıştım ve o kadar huzurlu ve sıcak hissettirdi ki. Seslendirmenin de muhteşem olmasıyla ben de Keraban ağa ve arkadaşlarıyla birlikte bir yolculuğa çıkmışım gibi hissediyorum.
Lütfen okuyun. Okuyacağınız en keyifli kitaplardan biri.
Keraban nasıl bir isim bu arada. Jules Verne cidden bu ismi uydururken çok düşündü mü acaba! 😂

J'ai récemment fini ce livre de Jules Verne, de 1883. Le livre raconte l'histoire de Kéraban, un homme Turque qui doit traverser le Bosphore. Malheureusement pour lui, le Pasha a institué un nouveau impôt sur tous les passages du Bosphore. Têtu comme il est, Kéraban préfère traverser le litoral du mer noir plutôt que payer un impôt.
L'histoire commence assez intéressant (partiellement grace au style descriptif et très vif du Jules Verne). Cependant, la partie médiane de l'histoire était un peu lente; heureusement, ça n'était pas le cas pour la fin de l'histoire.
Normalement, je disait que cet histoire était trop lent pour moi. Mais quand j'ai appris que Jules Verne ait passé autant de temps dans une Bibliothèque -- il allait là pour tous ces recherches dès cinq heures du matin, j'ai pu voire le livre d'un autre perspectif. Quand je combine cela avec le fait que les descriptions de ces pays ètranges ont pu capturer mon imagination, je tiens à admettre que j'ai changé d'avis. Probablement ceci n'est pas son chef-d'œuvre, mais je vais certainement lire encore d'autres livres de lui.

jules verne’ün hangi kitabını okusam imgelemimde geniş ölçekli yahut ayrıntılı bir haritayı önünü açmış onu inceleyen, notlar alan, kültür çeşitliliğini ve değişik coğrafyaları seven bir insan canlanıyor. bu kitabında da farklı olmadı. her ne kadar sadece haritaları seven bir yazar diye nitelendirmek doğru değilse de benim onda en sevdiğim şey sanırım bu olduğu için bunu özellikle belirtme ihtiyacı hissettim. iyi ki varmış, iyi ki yazmış, daha okunacak çok kitabı var neyse ki^^

تیپیک داستانهای ژولورن.این کتاب رو در نوجوانی نخونده بودم. بیشتر تجدید حس خوبی بود که چندین سال پیش با خوندن این تیپ کتابها دستخوشش میشدم، بدون اون که عیب و ایراد داستان به چشمم بیاد. ترجمه هم افتضاح بود. جملات بی سر و ته و پر از اشکالات دستوری. مصور بودن کتاب رو بسیار دوست داشتم و با دیدن تصاویر به این فکر میکردم که چقدر بد که کتابهای جدید کمتر مصورند.

Jules Verne'in o harika denilen kitaplarından biri değil ama okunur. Osmanlıda, Türkiye topraklarında geçiyor olması ve yer şekili betimlemeleri buraları hiç görmemiş biri için mükemmel denilebilir. Bi bakılır. 3/5

Yo creí que Keraban era un joven pobre, tonto, sin dinero, musculoso. Pero no, es todo lo contarro. Es un personaje muy cómico y el libro está escrito de la mejor manera.

Okuduğum Jules Verne kitapları arasında en sevdiklerim grubuna dahil olan son kitap. Şunu yazarken bile mutlu oluyorum :) O derece beğendim...
