Coming Undone

Rate this book
It's supposed to be the biggest summer of Priscilla Jayne Morgan's life. She's on the brink of country music superstardom, yet she had to fire her crooked-manager Mama, and the tabloids are having a field day. Now her record label's hired a watchdog to escort her on her massive summer tour. And not just anyone, either - they sicced Jared Hamilton on her, the guy she once idolized more than anyone in the world.

Well, she doesn't care how hot he is. It's been too many years and too much water under the bridge, and she'll be damned if he gets to tell her what to do now.

Jared remembers exactly how headstrong P.J. can be and he knows she's going to be a handful. Problem is, he'd love to have his hands full of her. But he's cool. He's professional. And he's always in control.

He'd better be. Because for five long weeks he's stuck in close quarters with the wildest girl in show business.

I grew up in a household with two brothers, a daddy, and my grandfather. Too many men, in other words. They diluted M'ma's influence by diverting my attention to things like the danger of answering nature's call in the dead of the night. I've got a hint for those of you raised in a less spit-and-scratch world: check before you sit, because chances are that seat is gonna be up. And they don't even have the grace to be embarrassed about it. According to my sweet baby boy, if you're the minority sex in the household, you oughtta be putting it up for them. Sigh.

Having brothers was a mixed bag. When anybody messed with me they were always quick with an offer to beat them up. That was sorta nice, although I personally believe it had more to do with the fact that guys just like to fight than with any towering concern for my welfare. You might think that's cynical but guess who the target was if no one else was around and they were tired of fighting each other? I must've spent half my childhood locked in the bathroom, screaming, "Dad's gonna get you when he gets home." I know, I know, nobody likes a stoolie. But it was either that or have my block knocked off on a regular basis, and trust me, Daddy was the best deterrent going.

A smart woman probably would've gone away to an all-girl school or moved in with some girlfriends at the first opportunity. Me, I got married to my high school sweetie. And the tradition continues. Our only kid (who hasn't been a kid for quite some time now) is the aforementioned sweet baby boy, and except for an Irish setter we had for eleven years a long time ago, even our pets have all been male. I just try to stay afloat whenever I find myself in the deep end of the testosterone pool, and if you don't think that isn't a trial sometimes, I'm here to tell you- it can be hell.

Then again, it can also be heaven. In fact, it mostly is. But listen, don't tell my guys I 'fessed up to that, okay? Trust me, it's difficult enough already, just trying to stay one step ahead of the game.

Coming Undone is the fourth installment in Marine series. We finally meet Jared and P.J. again in this book.

I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed that this book was just a mediocre read. In fact, the story started off very good. After finishing the first chapter, I became totally hooked and couldn't put it down. I found myself rooting for P.J. to ditch Jared and give him some lessons. I really enjoyed the story until near the end of the book when everything started to go downhill. During the last 20% of the book, I felt so bad because I had to put a lot of effort into finishing it. This book really had the potential to be a 4 stars rating, but alas, it didn’t deliver as I expected.

Although this isn't Andersen's latest and greatest, it is a fun story and I found myself enjoying both protag's immensely.

Country Star, PJ Morgan is having some management problems.

Unfortunately the crooked manager she just fired is also her mother. When bad press and a psycho religious fanatic converge to overwhelm her, her new management decides to take matters into their own hands. Unbeknownst to PJ, they hire help from Semper Fi Security- owned and operated by another popular character in Andersen's Marine series, John "the Rocket" Miglionni (Hot & Bothered (Marine, Book 3)).

PJ doesn't know it yet but her life's about to take another wild turn, because Miglionni's brother-in-law, and the one man who knows her better than anyone else, has just been assigned to her detail- and unlike the last time they were together, he's not letting her out of his sight til the job is done.

Susan Andersen is one of the few contemp authors I consistently follow anymore. Too many have become same old, same old for me and even though the stalker plot in Coming Undone is definitely tired, I was able to get over it rather quickly because I loved PJ and Jared!

Post listen review.

Listening to this at work and not laughing with thundering guffaws at the ridiculousness of it was the hardest thing I have done all year. And keep in mind I am including running 26.2 miles for a marathon as something less hard than that.

This one gets plus points and minus points.

Plus point- No one ever calls the main character smart, so it's ok that she acts dumb a lot.

Minus point- They eat in a place called "the praire dog cafe"

Plus point- The psycho stalker nutjob guy is believably psycho-stalkery

Minus point- They stay in a place called "The wind blew inn"

Minus point- No man that I have ever met would ever say to his brother-in-law "I am going to go fishing and then get some serious snuggle time in with my woman." I believe if a guy said that to me about my sister, I would have to hit him. And this was dialogue between ex-marines.

Plus point- There was less shopping in this.

Minus point- There was shopping in it.

Double minus point- The guy in this not only enjoys the day out to the spa for Nell (the required plump friend who always gets a makeover in every romance novel).

Triple minus point- And then he actually thinks to himself, "Her highlights not only accentuate her face but make her eyes look bluer" Again, no man I have ever met will think that about their girlfriends' friends' haircut. Ever.

Quadruple minus point- In addition he asks Nell if she wants to keep the braid that she has lopped off. A thought that would not occur to most men.

Plus point- There was less country music in it than expected.

Minus point- Shania Twain is quoted more than once.

Minus point- All of the men are always perfectly built.

Minus point- None of the men ever exercise.

Minus point- They must be on the 'roids.

Plus point- I didn't absolutely hate the majority of the characters.

Minus point- Everyone in the book is really fixated on PJ's posterior. She always thinks it's too big, her friends agree. All the men that see her like it that way. She is simply insecure and should maybe buy the "buns of steel" video.

Minus point- Every single woman in the book is attracted to the guy, Jared.

Plus point- He isn't going after every woman in sight.

Minus point- PJ never believes that he is not after every woman in sight
even though he never makes any indication that he is.

Plus point- It was shorter than the last romance I listened to.

Winner? No one.

Loser? Me for having listened to it.

Pre-listen guess.

There are two things in life I absolutely cannot stand. Country Music and trashy romance novels. Oh boy, this is a trashy romance about country music.

Upcoming Country Star PJ Morgan is hiding out of sight for awhile while her ex-agent Mother is using the press to bad mouth PJ. Her new record label is nervous that their maybe truth to the rumors and hires an private investigator to find her and make sure she stays on tour. Jared Hamilton hasn't seen PJ for fifteen years when they both depended on each other to survive, when he gets assigned to babysit PJ sparks begin to fly where the left off.

A fun filled wild ride with a fiery tempered PJ and a Jared who has been emotional shut since last talking to PJ. I thought this was a fun read that was difficult to put down.

Meh. This one falls somewhere between a 2 and a 3 star read. I listened to this book on audio and though it held my attention decently enough I just wasn’t feeling any chemistry between the two lead characters. I admit that I’ve probably been reading way too much m/m erotica of late, but this book completely lacked steam. It was fun in a cute, empty sort of way and the writing was engaging enough. So engaging I didn’t realize that almost nothing of importance had happened for the first half of the book. Still, there wasn’t anything that made me scream with laughter or scream with frustration thus the resulting feeling that I just wasted several hours on another “meh” book.

Jared Hamilton and rising country star Priscilla Jayne Morgan (hereon known as PJ) were once homeless kids who bonded trying to survive on the streets. Now that sounds like a story I would have loved to read. This one notsomuch. Jared now works for a security firm and is hired by PJ’s faceless recording bigwigs to make sure she shows up for her concerts. They do this supposedly because her Mama, also her former manager until recently (fired because the bitch was stealing from her own daughter) has been bad mouthing her and they assume she’s flighty or something. PJ refuses to tell her side of the story and allows mama to ruin her reputation. PJ is much nicer a gal than me. Though all of this makes no sense to me it does set up two crucial plot points in the story so I just shut off my brain and went with it. The two run hot and cold with each other but mostly cold especially Jared. He is the “I am an Island. I must not feel emotion or really bad things might happen. I must remain in control at all times but especially during sex” type of dude that completely exhausts me. Apparently, Jared felt rejected by PJ years earlier and he’s holding on to that feeling for dear life even though 15 or so years have passed. They bop around from town to town, her playing gigs at small honky tonks before the big tour gets into full swing and he shadows her every move. Eventually Jared realizes she’s a professional and he is just wasting his time and driving her crazy, and decides to walk away. They share a big not-so-hot (if you ask me), toothy, smoochy. But wait! This is Romancelandia and an off his nut stalker conveniently enters the picture just then and Jared is forced to stick around to protect her. Great timing crazy man, this book could have been over. Instead, they get to fight some more, go to a spa, do some shopping (which gives PJ a chance to model some undies for Bigboy), talk a little and somehow fall in love.

Usually this author is a bit witty but I found myself cringing at some of her phrasing such as when Jared likens PJ’s little breasts to “cupcakes”, when PJ calls the sex act the “humpty hump” and especially when Jared “collapsed like a horse that had its legs shot out from under it” after experiencing an earth shattering orgasm. Just ew. I don’t want to think about dying horses in my light and frothy romances.

Sadly, I did not get the warm fuzzies at any time during this romance and really that’s why I read them. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Thrilling, sexy romance
5 stars

If you are a fan of Susan Andersen you will be happy to finally see a story for Jared (Tori's runaway brother from Hot & Bothered) and his street-wise runaway friend, P.J.. Although this book probably does stand alone, I would really suggest you've read Hot & Bothered before reading this one as otherwise you'll miss out on quite a lot of back story that is essential to the plot.

Both Jared and P.J. are wonderful characters. P.J. is feisty, fun and strong while Jared is a delicious former marine with a tough exterior and a lovely soft centre! The pair together are fiery, sexy and perfect for each other.

As is often the case with Susan Andersen - there is an element of suspense/danger in this book with the addition of a deranged stalker. This works well within the book while never overshadowing the plot and it's interesting enough to keep you involved without being scary or disturbing. (Okay, a deranged stalker is always at least slightly disturbing!)

Overall, I am so glad that P.J. and Jared finally got their own story and Susan Andersen has created a book filled with her own brand of humour, edge and sexiness. This is a book that you will not want to put down and one I would highly recommend if you like your romance with a little bit extra. 5 stars.

This is book 4 of the Marines series by Susan Andersen, the story of Priscilla Jayne Morgan and Jared Hamilton. I was so excited about this book, I know that Hot & Bothered wasn't that great but this one I had such high hopes for, and it fizzled out on me. I love Susan Andersen so I'm a little shocked as to how much this book disappointed me. It has nothing to do with writing itself but the story in a whole is just week. I mean there were so many crazy ways to work Jared and Priscilla but really a famous singer after the life she had. I just didn't feel it was believable, not that it couldn't happen because sure it could but I never ever got that vibe from Pj, and it bothered me so much that I think it altered my opinion of the book. I liked Jared well enough and I loved that he turned into the strong type but I still just feel they lost the spark I loved about them in Hot and Bothered. This one wasn't boring though so that's a plus.

Really good -- It's nice to be able to read books that characters follow in order.

This series has been fun, sweet, and sexy. It is a shame to finally read the last book. It was fun to see how P.J. and Jared grew up. I fully approve Susan Andersen taking them forward 15 years in the three years since the publication of "Hot and Bothered" and giving them a well deserved HEA.

P.J. and Jared spent a summer together on the streets of Denver when she was 13 and he was 17 and on the run because he believed he had accidentally killed his father. After 15 years, she is a rising Country star and he has joined John as a partner in Simper Fi Investigations. John has been hired by Wild Winds Records to make sure P.J. gets to her concerts. P.J.'s nasty mama is spreading lies about her. Jared is sent the be the baby sitter and P.J. doesn't like the reason for their reunion and ditches him. We get a religious fanatic stalker and a lot of hot sex. Jared has control issues and P.J. doesn't want anyone in her business.

I'm pretty sure this entire novel is just an excuse for Andersen to point out that Josh Turner does fabulous make-out music. The leads are side characters from the author's Hot & Bothered, miraculously aged to adulthood through the power of Offstage Soap Opera Magic (no really, Andersen says so), and when I realized that the critical thinking portions of my brain sort of shut off, or I might point out how detrimental to your plot it is to rely entirely on an offstage backstory to give your characters depth. Not terrible by any stretch but a few of the similes employed during the sex scenes read like The Onion spoofing a romance novel.

I was looking for a cheesy romance, and this one had a cute cover. The premise is kind of interesting: a country music star gets a bodyguard in the form of a man she'd gone through a traumatic experience with as a teenager. The writing is pretty good, except for the sex scenes, which use some of the most egregious sex euphemisms ever put into type (the heroine's breasts are referred to as cupcakes at one point).

This one didn't come together for me, so much anger in the beginning for little reason to me. I suppose I was disappointed with how far they grew apart after them being the best part of Hot and Bothered.

I'm going to try the Audio version narrated by Nicole Poole and see if that helps it for me.

I love this book! Never mind that it's part of one of my all-time favorite book series. It is also a sequel to a story within a story to one of my all-time favorite books. We catch up with these two fifteen years down the road and even get a glimpse into the lives of the couples that have come before them. It's earned two thumbs, way, way up and a special spot on my bookshelf.

I was let down by this book. The story line is set up in Hot and Bothered by I found the 'life' between the two books changed the characters in such a way that I no longer liked them or was absorbed by their chemistry. And without chemistry, what does a romance have left?

A man in command.
A woman unwilling to be in love all alone.
A fan determined to teach his once-favorite star a lesson she wont soon forget
P.J. Morgan is an up-and-coming Country singer whose life is just about perfect-- until her manager-mom embezzles from her, her biggest fan becomes her worst nightmare, and the watchdog herrecord label hires to keepher in line turns out to be Jared Hamilton, the man she idolized once upon a time.

Hot and Bothered

Country music upcoming young star Priscilla Jayne Morgan "PJ" is being vilified by her crooked-ex manager mother who was her agent but was fired for embezzlement. Mama is a miserable bitch who is crying to the tabloids about her terrible daughter. This awful woman kicked PJ out at 13 yrs old where she lived on the streets for awhile.

On the streets she met Jared Hamilton a 17 yr old who was on the run. They had a brief but solid friendship keeping safe and bonding. Now it turns out her record label wants her to have a watchdog to make sure she shows up at performances as he mama is doing everything she can to ruin PJ's reputation.

SO sweet, and sexy this older book from 2005 is just a really satisfying read. I like the characters (some were in other books of this series) and like the way they reconnect after 15 yrs. There has been a real bond since they first met as teens. The stalker adds drama and suspense.

This is the concluding book to the Marines series. (#4)

Due to numerous fan requests, the writer went ahead and concluded with PJ & Jared's story, the teen characters from book #3. Yeah! Those characters jumped off the page so I was glad to see what happened when they met again in adulthood.
Fast paced. Great chemistry & banter. Some suspense & humor.
The sexual tension builds up and then gets very steamy about 2/3 way thru.

I liked the epilogue chapter which wrapped up things w/the characters from all 4 books.

Overall, this was a good series so while this writer is hit or miss for me, this one was a hit. Book #2 was the weakest but #4 was a great way to conclude the series.
You don't have to read it in order.

Up and coming country music star Priscilla has fired her mama as manager because she was embezzling. She won't tell people why so stories are flying. Her record company hires a babysitter for her because the stories are stating she's unreliable among other things. The babysitter turns out to be the young man she lived with on the streets when she was 13 and her mama had kicked her out of the house. The breakup left each with bad feelings towards each other. Then a crazy person starts stalking her because she is disrespecting her mama. Good story.

3.5 Stars. This book was enjoyable, but there was something missing. Maybe it was the lack of personal interaction. A band would be a tight-knit group, so you would think they would be verbally messing with each other all of the time.

It would have also added to the story if it had included more romance between Nell & Hank.

This is the last book in the series and the two main characters were the side story in the previous title. It's a fun read and the side romance is one of my favorites. And it was great to see Gert again. She is a terrific character!

Wouldn't it be nice to see future stories about Esme and Grayson, John and Tory's kids? Maybe that's overkill.
