My Butterfly life story:

Some species of butterfly begin their journey high up in the mountain and travel over 3000 miles: the Monarch for example.

Butterflies are mature insects (they have come of age)
…if we find God then we must endeavour to ‘come of age’, to be mature and walk with God on the righteous road He has for us.

Scientists have found that the African Swallowtail butterfly which glows brightly at times has a structure in its wings which looks extremely similar to the human invention of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Humans have only recently discovered LEDs but God created the African Swallowtail ages ago. He can supply all our needs according to His rich creative provision.

…God gave me a monarch butterfly of my own two years ago. It was on the ground sitting there in the garden and God told me to pick it up which I did ! It let me put it on my finger and I carried it to the house. At the time I didn’t realise that monarchs live for months and thought it was dying coz I thought butterflies only lived a day or so. I thought it was dying so put it in a box! God has told me that I shouldn’t put living things in a box but should show them for all to see their beauty and life.

Another experience of a butterfly happened on a trip to Israel on Mt Tabor (where Jesus may have ascended and had a chat with Elijah and Moses). A swallowtail butterfly landed on my finger (a big yellow butterfly). I had asked it too a couple of times and it did ! It was a significant moment for me as God had talked to me through butterflies before.

Our lives are for living to the full and the fullest way is with Gods life. Don’t squirm on the ground eating leaves. Let the struggle of life, the crysalys of love mature you so that you have wings to fly above and see things differently. Drink the nectar of the Holy Spirit which is full of peace and joy which gives you strength.

• I have always had eternity in my heart. I have always known that we humans are eternal.

• I know that because my Mum prayed and cried out to God over my cot, even though she didn’t know Him, he has listened to her cry. She prayed that I would have a better life than her.

• My caterpillar life of knowing God began in Fleet ! We lived up the road in Pipers Croft. Mary, my mother was in a bad way at that time. My Dad was away working long hours, she was v. depressed and her life would have fallen apart severely was it not for her finding out about God and giving her life over to Him.
Our good friend Pam Robertson helped mum follow Jesus and she showed Mum how she could have power to overcome. She gave up 60 cigarettes a day in one day! A miracle !

• As an eight year old I saw my Mum change dramatically from a drink swilling, smoke filled depressive to a shiny, flourishing and happy woman.

• In line with her, I too began to change and became a leaf munching, bible reading, Jesus singing, faith speaking, caterpillar Christian !

• I talked about God lots and tried to show my friends excitedly about my faith. This was not welcomed in most cases and I became an ‘outcast’ caterpillar christian amongst the girls at junior purely because I shared my faith.

• Being naturally a very shy child this didn’t help with social learning skills !

• One of my best friends at Juniors: Marion Crofts. Turned out to be my best friend at senior school who I also must have shared a lot about God with.

• God has protected me throughout my life amazingly and this story is one major example: Marion and I were friends in the first two years of senior school and were v. close, cycling to school together every day, meeting up after school, etc. In the second year of senior school my Dad decided to move our family to Farnborough. We didn’t quite realise why God allowed us to sell our house in Pipers Croft so easily with a cash buyer in a bad housing market (Dad didn’t even use an estate agency). Dad just prayed one day…’if you want us to move to Farnbo

As a young child Julia Stevens saw her severely depressed mother's life transformed by faith. In time she followed her mum's path and discovered her own faith. A faith which has certainly been transformational in her own life.

Early in the book Julia says 'When you know the Lord, you know more who you are and who the Lord has called you to be'. She has come a very long way from the young girl with anxiety and OCD she used to be. Her immersive faith has given her strength and self-worth and it's very clear that she has a calling and deep commitment to helping others to both understand who Jesus is, and to understand just how important they are to Him.

Although there are many biographical elements, this is primarily a devotional and teaching book, split into twelve chapters, each studying a different theme.

My own experience of day-to-day faith is very different to Julia's, and yet there is still much with which I connected in this book, in particular in the chapter In the Beginning, You Were Made in His Likeness. The following phrases are marked in my copy:

'His Kingdom accepts those who are weak because your life is strong when it is dependent on His strength and not your own. He knows that you are on a journey of being transformed into His likeness.'

'You can decide not to be defined by your own feelings or perception about yourself; but be defined instead by what He says about you.'

and:

'Ask God to help you see yourself how He sees you.'

Later sections of the book talk further about the choices we make ourselves, day by day, to be more aware of God - and the importance of doing this as an ongoing part of life, during work, rest, and worship.

Chapter headings are:
Where I've Been
The I AM - I Am Like Him
In the Beginning, You Were Made in His Likeness
When We See Him, We Become Like Him
Ruling and Reigning in His Love
Sanctuary
Menorah
Be Continually Filled
Adam and Ishah
Sons and Daughters, Kings and Priests
You Are A House of Prayer
Who I am, a Testimony

Each chapter contains something which is likely to resonate with or challenge the reader. This is a book which is ideal for picking up and reading a chapter at a time, and then giving your mind and spirit time and space to reflect on the elements which have stood out for you.

Like Him by Julia Stevens is a powerful Christian nonfiction book that will aid your walk of faith. It is full of scripture, poems, prayers, sound biblical advice and the author’s personal experiences.
Julia Stevens writes in a very personable way, making Like Him accessible for all. She explains some of the biblical happenings and backgrounds. I particularly liked the meanings of names including those of Jesus.
We learn about the heart of God. “Our Father… cares about the little things that matter so much to us all.” Nothing is too small for the concern of God. If it matters to us, it matters to Him.
God desires us to come to Him, rest in Him and learn from Him. We are to live in faith and love which will push fear aside. We can all come to God just as we are because of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. “You are qualified through the Cross of Jesus.” We merely need to say yes to God because Jesus has already paid for our sins on the cross.
When we know God, our bodies become His temples. “We are a sanctuary for Him to inhabit.” As such, we need to be aware of what we put into our bodies and how we treat them.
We need to feed daily on His word. “Daily connection, prayer and worship is a key to being a habitation of the Lord.” As we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. It is all about relationship.
Prayer is our communication with God. We must be sure to listen and not just to speak. Relationship with anyone, and especially God, should be a dialogue and not a monologue.
Julia Stevens shares her testimony in chapter twelve as well as her experiences throughout. There are times when God speaks through visions as well as when He speaks to her heart.
Like Him was a really powerful book. It is perfect for individual study or for connect groups to work through together. This book has the power to aid your walk with God, to help you draw closer to the heart of the Father.
I received a free copy. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

This was a very enlightening book.

I found this book to be very enlightening and While I was reading some parts of it, it brought me to tears, good tears. I really enjoyed it there was parts of it that I personally have never experienced myself so I can’t really identify. I pray someday I will experience a deeper revelation of His presence.
