Over 600 drawings and 65 color paintings portray representative species of the 111 families of North American beetles. Includes information on collecting and preserving beetles.
A good reference, wish it had more color plates and drawings AND that it covered more species, but there are too many species to cover in any one volume field guide and many are endemics. It is a very good book and resource for the amateur and professional alike. Cannot be beat for the price.
Versatile- Really good field guide and useful lab identification guide. Key is to family, with descriptions of many genera. Good selection of rare, weird and common beetles. There has been enough beetle work done to do some nice regional guides in this series with more illustrations and natural history.
This guide is extremely helpful for focusing solely on beetles (Coleoptera order). Especially useful is a table that lists the beetle families and provides the number of North American species, their range, abundance, locale type, range of length and antennae type.
