Gunnie Rose [Dramatized Adaptation] #3

The Russian Cage [Dramatized Adaptation]

Rate this book
Picking up right where A Longer Fall left off, this thrilling third installment follows Lizbeth Rose as she takes on one of her most dangerous missions yet: rescuing her estranged partner, Prince Eli, from the Holy Russian Empire. Once in San Diego, Lizbeth is going to have to rely upon her sister Felicia, and her growing Grigori powers to navigate her way through this strange new world of royalty and deception in order to get Eli freed from jail where he’s being held for murder.

Russian Cage continues to ramp up the momentum with more of everything Harris’ readers adore her for with romance, intrigue, and a deep dive into the mysterious Holy Russian Empire.

About the author

Charlaine Harris

203 books37k followers
Charlaine Harris has been a published writer for over forty years. Her first two books were standalones, followed by a long sabbatical when she was having children. Then she began the Aurora Teagarden book, mysteries featuring a short librarian (eventually adapted for Hallmark movies). The darker Lily Bard books came next, about a house cleaner with a dark past and considerable fighting skills.

Tired of abiding by the mystery rules, Harris wrote a novel about a telepathic barmaid that took at least two years to sell. When the book was published, it turned into a best seller, and DEAD UNTIL DARK and the subsequent Sookie books were adapted in Alan Ball's "True Blood" series. At the same time, Harris began the Harper Connelly books. Harper can find the bones of the dead and see their last minute.

When those two series wound to a close, the next three books were about a mysterious town in Texas, called Midnight.

A change in publisher and editor led to Harris's novels about a female gunslinger in an alternate America, Lizbeth Rose. The Gunnie Rose books concluded with the sixth novel.

She's thinking about what to write next.

The Russian Cage is book three in the Gunnie Rose series by Charlaine Harris. This series is set in an alternate history with a very different US. It features a ruthless, courageous, loyal and hardworking young woman who works as a gunnie.

I’m continuing my Graphic Audio listening to the Gunnie Rose series. I’m really enjoying Gunnie Rose and her gun slinging charm. The Graphic Audio brings the old west charm to life.

After the last adventure Prince Eli left for home and a quiet promise was made with Lizbeth. Nothing spoken, just a set of rings left behind. It has been some time since Eli left and Lizbeth is missing him, but she won’t chase after him, until she receives a cryptic letter from her sister, Felicia, that sets her on a rescue mission to the Holy Russian Empire.

I liked watching Lizbeth grow in her awareness of her strong feelings for Eli, she never really thought they had a future so she was determined to bury them. Yet, when Eli was in danger she showed up and saved him.

We are treated to Lizbeth making some choices that seem more like assassin than gunnie, but with the help of friends she doesn't take on the burden alone. We meet Eli’s family and get to wander around the Holy Russian Empire.

The Russian Cage was a high stakes thrill with danger, adventure, love, and political intrigue.

Graphic Audio: What can I say! I’m liking the GA for this series. Each narrator brings their character to life. The music is perfect, the sound effects enjoyable, and the voices clear.

Alternate history with a very different US, and a ruthless and judgemental but also young, courageous, loyal and hardworking gunnie who a Russian prince is lucky to have on his side.

Somehow Felix is turning out to be a very interesting character.

2023 Reread -- dramatized audio

Wow, for someone who explains that she's a gunnie not an assassin, Lizbeth sure works on a lot of assassinations in this one. The witness to the motivating incident that probably caused Eli's arrest was the most problematical. And it turned out that the guy she shot for politically scheming to get Eli killed was probably not the final boss. (Which I guess sets up the fifth book.) But I liked watching her growing awareness of her strong feelings for Eli; she never really thought they had a future so she was determinedly burying them. Yet when he was in danger she showed up and saved him, and that simplified things a bit.

Eli has been gone for awhile. Lisbeth Rose misses him but she won't chase him. Then she learns he is in prison and goes to save him. Things are dicey and dangerous.

GraphicAudio makes a fine story super fine. This is the third in the Gunnie Rose story. No spoilers, simply note that if you like a bit of dystopia and Western-type reading, you will probably like this series.
