When Grandma Mouse has the whole family get together for a photograph, no one is very happy about it until Monsieur Souris, the photographer, comes up with the right word, in a book shaped like a wedge of cheese
David Pelham pop-up books are amazingly charming, as is this one. The rhyme and story is very clever and the paper engineering is amazing. Plus, the book is in the shape of a wedge of Swiss cheese! The mouse illustrations are equally endearing. Rereading this almost 25 years from publication still brings a big smile to my face.
Say Cheese is about a grandmother who wants to have a family photograph taken. She sends out invitations, her family is leery on attending, but they all do and a family photograph is taken.
Say Cheese could be read in a classroom on picture day to remind the students to say "cheese". It does show different ways of living, which could tie to learning about cultures in Social Studies.
I was introduced to David Pelham books a few years ago. They are delightful! A kindergarten class I was working in begged for them daily. They are engaging fun reads. I loved them so much that I went out a bought them for my classroom library. I was happy to see kids so excited about books!
