A simple, practical primer on the process, the character and the practice of meditative writing as a way of living more soulfully. For anyone interested in creative writing, self-discovery and personal and spiritual renewal.
I have read this book at least four times in the past 6 months. Simply SoulStirring has become like comfort food for me. And more. It is as a mysterious feast, each reading unveiling a layer that was invisible to me in prior readings. I have engaged in this meditative writing process and am deeply moved by the impact it has had on my life.
Yes, it is written in a relatively simple format, in order, I believe, to make the process accessible to anyone who is interested in experimenting with it. In a way, this is the beauty of Frances’ work, he has been able to take a complex process and present it in a comfortable, inviting format. But as I said, every time I read it, my understanding is heightened. There is more to it than meets the eyes. (The book is also filled with resources for more in-depth information and understanding, should one desire to go deeper.)
What is it about Simply SoulStirring that makes me want to read it over and over? Well, I believe it is because Francis Dorff does not try to define or describe our personal life experiences, but rather he provides a process by which the reader, if she follows it in her meditative writing, is able to reach her own understandings. This is not a book that gives answers to the big questions we ask in life, but rather, Fr. Francis shows a path on which we can find our own answers.
It’s worth mentioning that this is a beautiful book, too. The cover design, the colors, the way it feels in my hands when I hold it- all contribute to and enhance the reading experience of this beautiful book.
Sometimes it’s nice to read a short book about a topic and not get bogged down in too much explanation. This book offers that. I’ve long used journaling as a way of looking at my life and heart, but this book gave me some new ideas. It would also be a great intro for someone who would like to explore journaling as a meditative or spiritual practice for the first time.
