Versailles, lieu de pouvoir ? Oui, mais aussi lieu de plaisir, de désir et de débauche. Du modeste pavillon de chasse de Louis XIII, le jeune Louis XIV fait une garçonnière pour y abriter ses premières amours avec la timide Louise de La Vallière, puis décide, au grand dam de Colbert, d'aménager le lupanar de ses jeunes années. De la pulpeuse Mme de Montespan à l'ardente Mme de Maintenon, maîtresses, favorites ou passades d'un soir se succèdent alors en un tourbillon mutin. On y lutine avec ardeur dans les alcôves accueillantes des appartements de Le Brun ou derrière les bosquets propices des jardins de Le Nôtre. Après les mignons de Monsieur et les orgies du Régent, les demoiselles du Parc-aux-cerfs choisies par la Pompadour se disputent l'honneur d'être troussées par l'insatiable Louis XV. Las, Louis XVI le Mou peine à honorer Marie-Antoinette et, à la veille de la Révolution, la « petite Sodome » aux moeurs débridées a jeté ses derniers feux.

Michel Vergé-Franceschi, spécialiste de l'Ancien Régime, est professeur d'histoire moderne à l'université de Tours. Anna Moretti enseigne à l'université de Corte.

Hay tantas machistadas y comentarios del autor valorando moralmente a las mujeres que aparecen en el libro que lo he terminado de leer en diagonal.

Se salva un poco por las historias de salseo que cuenta, pero la forma en que lo hace deja bastante que desear.

Looking at the title I was expecting a different kind of book. One which looked at the influence the mistresses had on politics, fashion, public opinion. But it’s actually a long list of mistresses of Louis XIV and XV. And a little bit about Louis XVI.

It is a mix of historical sources (one could say opinions of that time or gossip), (erotic) fiction (which I skipped because this was not why I wanted to read this book) and (sometimes strong) opinions of the authors (i.e. praising Madame la Maintenon for being so motherly, so so motherly and good in bed of course, but sooooo motherly).

It is a lot of names and sometimes the authors go back and forth in time. As I am not really familiar with all the names and peoples, this was sometimes a bit confusing.

Unfortunately a let down. :(

This book left me sadly, quite unsatisfied. (I guess that’s what she said?).
The premise of the book seemed very interesting and although the writing was a bit dry, it was full of well-known names and important dates were highlighted. However, Interesting rich historical figures are reduced to stereotypes whose motives are dulled down to wanting power, love or sex. By taking contemporary rumors as facts, adding in some projection and speculation without much historical context the nuance of these people’s lives is sadly lost. It thus reads more as a sort of historical fanfiction than a well researched book about sexy times in Versailles.

Er zou best wel wat interessants te zeggen zijn geweest over de officiële en officieuze maîtresses van Louis XIV en Louis XV. Jammer genoeg komt dit boek niet veel verder dan het onkritisch herhalen van roddel, gemengd met eerder twijfelachtige pogingen tot academisch verantwoorde erotica.

Het had zeker anders gekund. Vrouwen als Montespan, Maintenon, Pompadour en Du Barry waren duidelijk invloedrijke spelers die mee vorm gaven aan het Franse koningschap. Het lot van de talrijke buitenechtelijke kinderen was zeker zinvol om te onderzoeken, met name de graven van Maine en Toulouse, die door Louis XIV hoog genoeg werden ingeschat om bij zijn dood zitting te krijgen in de regentschapsraad en om hem eventueel op te volgen.

En dan de arme Filips van Orléans, waarvan Vergé-Franceschi en Moretti schrijven dat het onrechtvaardig zou zijn om hem alleen te herinneren om zijn uitspattingen, om het vervolgens over niets anders te hebben.

Zestig jaar geleden zou dit boek tenminste enig schandaal hebben verwerkt. Nu lijkt het een vrij zinloze literaire oefening.

Een duizelingwekkende hoeveelheid minnaressen en saillante details passeren dit relaas over het Franse hof in de periode 1661- 1789. Met zorg vertaald uit het Frans door mevr. De Kort. De moeite waard om te lezen als je alle beroemde dames van weleer in hun context wilt plaatsen.

De schrijfstijl doet denken aan een prof die een lezing geeft. Heel veel feiten, data en opsommingen, maar ertussen ook op een eigenwijze vertelstijl de meest juicy anekdotes van Louis xiv tot Louis xvi. Leest dus, heel traag, maar wel informatief.

I quite liked the language used by authors to describe sexuality and sexual lives of kings and courtisans. It makes you reconsider your attitude towards sex. You also learn some historical facts, which is great for a general culture.
