Good Catholic wives didn't leave their husbands- Briony expected to live the rest of her life loving a man she could never have, chained to a man she despised all because she had made a horrid mistake.
Quentin hated not being able to save the woman he loved from the brother he had grown to disdain, but when Bobby Ray raised his hands to his Briony, he swore to make his sister-in-law a widow.
Finding his brother dead and struggling to find out who was after Briony, Quentin vowed he would stop at nothing to keep the woman he loved Safe.
Shara is- well let's just say touched. Born a Marine brat, Shara is a Navy Veteran with a pathological love for men in uniform, chocolate, and heroes that are maybe a touch psychotic. With over seventy-five books in her backlog, Shara has no intention of slowing down any time soon. She's definitely not safe for work, or the kids, or- you know what? She's just not safe.
This was a very sexy story about a forbidden love between a man and his sister-in-law. Fortunately (that sounds awful to say) the brother is out of the way when this story begins.
Quentin is one intense hero. He had better calm down or he's going to have blood pressure problems. I would classify him is a stalkerific hero, in fact. I really liked this about the story. I also liked that Briony reciprocates his love 100% (although she's a little more even-tempered than he is). This story is more from Quentin's viewpoint, which is fun with a romance, especially when the hero is so far gone like he is. You really get inside his head and see just how much he loves Briony and how most of what he does is about her. It makes his intensity a lot less scary.
The sex scenes are frequent and very descriptive. I could have done without the one scene with a little bit of butt play and discussion of certain acts I really don't like to read about in a romance (thankfully that did not occur in this book). But otherwise, they were pretty spicy in a good way. Quentin sure does like to do a certain kind of oral act on Briony. He does that a lot. The language is pretty raunchy. Not only in the sexual moments, but because we are dealing with law enforcement types and also lowdown criminals who aren't exactly the type to avoid use of profanity.
I liked some of the police procedural aspects as they try to find out who killed the lowlife husband (Quentin hated this guy, even though he was his brother. I can't say I blame him. He does something to his grave that is just wrong, but knowing what an intense guy Quentin is and how badly he wanted to throw his brother a beating for being such a lousy husband and especially when he found out that he sold his wife to pay off a drug debt, I gave Quentin a little slack on that).
I liked that although this was an interracial romance (Briony is Black and Quentin is White), it wasn't a major focus. It was about two people who loved each other deeply, but met each other later than they should have. His brother even gloated to Quentin that he married Briony because he knew that Briony was a woman that Quentin would have wanted for his own. That's cold! I have mad respect for the authors that they did not have Quentin and Briony cheating together while her husband was alive. That's a big turn-off for me.
All and all, this was an enjoyable read, definitely erotic, and I still enjoyed it although I wish it had no butt play or anything along those lines because that is not sexy or appealing to this romance reader at all. I have no desire to read about butt plugs in a love story. While I feel that would be unfair to take a star off just for that, I wasn't enjoying that aspect of this story, but I was glad it was very brief. I'm just saying for any writers or editors out there who want to know what an avid interracial romance fan thinks (hint, hint). Despite that, I would recommend this book to readers who like/tolerate their romance a little steamy.
When I first read the copy for this book, I was like I can't read this. A brother-in-law and a sister-in-law in love? No way? Totally forbidden and not my thing, but it was the "forbidden" that beckoned me. I couldn't imagine how the authors were going to handle this delicate situation.
Briony Beauchamp is the heroine and Quentin Beauchamp, her brother-in-law is the hero. It seems both have harbored feelings for each other for the entire time that Briony has been married to Quentin's brother Bobby Ray. Being faithful to her wedding vows and the fact that she at one time loved her husband, Briony never acts on any of her feelings for Quentin and neither does he for her. The death of her husband, Bobby Ray, makes it possible for them to finally express these feelings. It's hard to have any good feelings for Bobby Ray, because of the physical violence he committed against Briony.
There was no shortage of love scenes in this book. In fact, they were plentiful and most definitely scorching. I could have did without the mention of certain sex toys, even though this was an erotic romance. I just don't care for that sort of thing in a romance. I did like the fact that to go along with all this hotness there was a story and a good one. Thank goodness! From the start there's no love lost for Bobby Ray by his brother Quentin. However I found some of the things that he thought about him and did were just a little too much for me.
And although, I did ahbor the things that Bobby Ray did to Briony, I felt that blood is blood and that bond should be respected, no matter what, especially after the person is dead. Don't get me wrong, Bobby Ray was most definitely a twisted individual with his own agenda and should have paid for his deeds if he would have lived, but there is a certain respect accorded the dead that should never be crossed. And even though this is fiction, and I realize a certain license is taken, some of Quentin's thoughts and actions just didn't resonate with me.
On the flip side of the coin, Quentin is truly the quintessential Alpha hero. He didn't take any stuff from anyone in regards to Briony. After I finally was able to accept them as a couple, then I had to conclude that he'd be the kind of man I'd want to love and protect me, because his love wasn't daunted by anything.
I decided that Bobby Ray's marrying Briony in the first place was purely self serving and was all mixed up with the animosity he felt for his brother Quentin. He never loved her at all in my opinion. I found that Quentin did love his brother at one time, but he'd killed that love with his deeds and actions. He not only used physical violence to control the heroine, but planned to use her as a pawn.
Finally, I thought these two had suffered enough at the machinations of the hero's brother, which was neither of their faults, and I thought their love deserved to flourish. In the end, I got the feeling another story might be coming. Hopefully, Desiree and Tomas. There was just some unfinished business there.
I've said it before and I'll have to say it again, grammatical errors kill a story to a certain extent for me. I continue to be appalled by them, no matter how good the story is. Having to go back and read a line in correct English is just ... not appealing. I gave this story five stars, because it was just so good and although those terrible errors got on my last nerve, they didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story.
Description: When Briony’s no-good husband is murdered, her now former brother-in-law, Quentin steps in to both claim and protect her.
The Good: Quentin is a balls-to-the-wall kind of hero, very intense, very alpha, and all in from the start. Briony’s a very sweet girl, and it’s easy to see their attraction for each other, even if we’re not there for its genesis. Also, the sex is H.O.T.
The Bad: The story feels a bit rushed in places with emotional arcs like Briony’s relationship with her parents mentioned but left completely undeveloped. There’s also a subplot with Quentin’s partner which distracts from the bigger story and fails to titillate.
The Naughty: Erotic, sex in public places, explicit language, unprotected sex.
As I am a HUGE fan of Ms.Azod's, this book didn't let me down. It does get a little muddled through the middle for a couple of pages where you can tell she wasn't sure where the story should go, but it lands perfectly. Great dose of Alpha mail and perfect pitch of everyday woman. Gotta love it!
Enjoyed this book. Quent is straight up alpha male out to love and protect what's his at all costs. I see the book originally released in 2009 and is the first book in the author's Law & Order series. I'm interested to if there will be another book in this series? I would like to know what happens between Richards and his love interest (the informant).
