A compelling novella about a not-unusual situation with so many of our men and women overseas and dealing with the injuries to mind and spirit, not to mention body, that war causes. For this couple who had been dating for six years--they were "first love" for the other--and engaged for two years, their relationship takes a hit that may or may not be lethal. War has changed Patrick and when he receives pictures of Erin at an office party, sees her delight and good humor, remembers the joy she has in her family and friends, he knows that he has changed. The war has ripped away his ability to laugh, to find anything positive about life. So he breaks their engagement by email. Luckily for him, he has a girl that won't let go, and when he returns home and finds her ensconced in his apartment, the tussle for Patrick's spirit, his inner health, and their future is on. It is a short story but there's lots here in these few pages. It is really a study of a relationship that could go either way.
I really tried, but the heroine just did not have enough self-respect for me. I love angsty story lines where the hero hurts the heroine and then has to win her back (with lots of groveling and soothing) but this is not that. The hero is a jerk and the heroine just keeps chasing after him even though there is no reason for her to think things might work out between them. And,
Erin is rejected by her high school sweetheart and fiancé, Patrick, before his return from war in the Middle East. Believing this abandonment is due to her weight gain, Erin launches into her own battle to win him back. Patrick resists Erin's persistent devotion, finally succumbing to his desires for her. Thinking he would scare her off with his basic dominating desires, Patrick unleashes the full force of his eroticism. Erin gives herself into Patrick's desires, saving his soul with her trust and love.
Erin Riley dreams every day about her fiancé who is fighting in the war overseas, believing that his love and devotion remains as steady as hers. So when she receives a letter from him indicating that he doesn't want to see her again, her heart is broken. Because of a 40-lb weight gain, Erin is convinced his leaving her is because of her weight. What she doesn't realize is that it is the weight on Patrick's heart that threatens to separate them. Despite his adamant insistence that he not see her, Erin hatches a plan to get Patrick back and find out what has made him so causally end their relationship.
Patrick O'Rourke feels like a dead man inside. Surviving the war when many of his friends didn't come home feels worse than if he died along with them. Convinced he no longer deserves a pure soul like Erin, Patrick feels he is doing her a favor by breaking it off before he comes home. His time in the Middle East helped him come to terms with his desires to dominate his partner and he no longer has the energy or desire to fight off the temptation. The idea of subjecting Erin--happy, beautiful Erin--to his basic urges seems cruel. He believes the best choice is to let her go and not expose her to the heartless man he now believes himself to be.
This novella was so awesome I had to read it twice! It completely sucked me in emotionally. I love reading about heroines who are a little larger than the average 'it' girl. Erin's story will hit close to home for any woman who's been dumped or teased for being a few pounds overweight. Liz Andrews taps perfectly into the insecurity that can come along with a few extra pounds. Despite her weight, Patrick can't help his feelings for Erin. His desire for Erin and her body was especially heartwarming. Patrick shows Erin that a few extra pounds can't get between a man and the woman he loves.
Patrick fights his urge to dominate Erin but her willingness to love him even with his commanding tendencies draws Patrick from his self-imposed emotional seclusion and back into life. Her acceptance and warm welcome melts Patrick's resistance away. Liz Andrew's depiction of BDSM scenes is beautifully done. She lingers on the beautiful aspects of a dominant and submissive relationship--trust. The love scenes are not unnecessarily cruel and are paced perfectly to stimulate the reader. Give it a read! Heck, read it twice!
I was very disapointed. It wasn't what i was expecting; this is not about a man suffering with PTSD and his woman helping him out, which i tough it was. So not for me.
3 1/2 stars Patrick and Erin are engaged and have been together since high school. After high school Patrick went into the reserves and was called to duty now gone for two years Erin gets an email from Patrick telling her thats there relationship is over. Devastated by Patricks email Erin decides not to accept there break up and goes about her plan to seduce Patrick and to find out what really has happened. Patrick has always loved Erin but knows after the things that happened while he was at war and his darker desires that he isn't good enough for Erin. Patrick just never thought Erin wouldn't take no for an answer. I liked this short story but there was something missing and I think maybe a few more pages of there relationship would have helped to feel more contacted with Erin and Patrick. That being said I think this story was well written and the epilogue at the end was a great end and gave us a glimpse into their future.
