Nothing good ever happens after midnight! The air is a perpetual stench of "midnight" in the brutally uncommon town of Mecklenburg, Colorado. Its secrets separate the town from the the secrets, the unknown, and the uneasiness. Given the chance of a lifetime, Tom Porter accepts a new job in Mecklenburg. But deep within the town's copper mine lies a secret, a doorway that will transport him into a parallel wasteland controlled by an insidious faction of people. Tom stumbles across the door and is forced into the parallel world, where he awakens hairless, bloody, and naked. Lives hang in the balance as Tom's only hope is to find the Book of the Black, which is the key that will lead him home if he can survive.
My issue is that the writing is very amateurish and the story flow a bit awkward and some points not thought out. Having said that, I think there is potential here. Some things could be polished up and elaborated on to make the story more complete.
I also think Mr Lester should consider taking a couple of English/writing classes to hone and improve his skills. A good editor would make a great difference as well.
I tried. I honestly tried. If I have ever seen a book that needed an editor, at least a Grammer checker, this is it. It was a good premise, honestly. But by mid-point, it felt like 4 different premises, 18 main characters, and no connection between any of it. I understand mixing genres and storyline, but there is usually something coherent in those stories. I never found it in this one.
This was another one I didn't know how to feel about. I don't necessarily mind gory and this book was...there was also urine and poop descriptions which while accurate (I'd pee my pants too if I was scared) just got old quick. Also played way too many games with my heart concerning the dog. This is a part of a series so now I gotta figure out if I want to continue it or not. 🤔
The reason I didn't give this book the full 5 stars is because the author never fully explained everything. I hope more is explained in the other books.
Great book with an excellent story line and many well developed characters! Once I opened the book up I couldn’t put it down! I received an advanced readers copy.
