Stephen Tryon delivers a prescient parody of an American President who wants to be a king. A tired student falls asleep at his desk and finds himself bouncing between dream experiences in the Oval Office and the town of Green Valley. Socrates, Descartes, Jesus and a host of other interesting characters help Stephen survive adventures including a Black Lives Matter protest, a presidential rally, a day in the Senate and encounters with a sinister foreign power. As our student struggles to find his way home, dream worlds collide in a final, climactic court appearance.
I feel like I'm being a bit generous in giving this a 3-star rating. Without a half star option, I have rounded this up from 2.5. While there were valid and important points made and some humorous moments (reading this aloud to my partner, he almost did a spit take at one point) it was also pretty dumb, and there were some things I can't really get past, like Donny/Donnie, switching back and forth between the first and third person randomly in the middle of a paragraph or sentence, improper use of quotation marks, punctuation, and many typos, and the random bold text scattered here and there for no apparent reason. This dream within a dream (and a crossover of said dreams) with talking animals and fantastical situations did have its redeeming qualities, but overall, it was pretty dumb.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Goodreads… once you get past the different spellings of Donny/Donnie and random dark font sentences through out the book and some other missed edits… it’s eerie how this dreamy book hits home and speaks so many truths! It does get a little religious at the end but overall great book. I love how the author references politics and world events in a mysterious and comical way that’s thought provoking.
Accurate and timely. Unfortunately not likely to impact those that actually need to read it. Nice philosophy overview and offers a rational approach to fixing some of our current political problems. *Goodreads giveaway winner*
The beginning of the book was hard to get through and felt slow at times, but the middle improved significantly and became much more engaging. However, the ending felt a bit off to me and didn’t fully meet my expectations, even though the overall story had its strong moments.
