Wayne Thiebaud: CLOWNS

Rate this book
Throughout his career, American artist Wayne Thiebaud (born 1920) has been associated with lusciously tactile and colorful paintings depicting desserts, still lifes, and landscapes. Though Thiebaud is also known for rendering the figure in striking unemotive poses, this new exhibition debuts a humanistic body of work focusing on clowns, as these performers are portrayed in various segments of their acts, both on and off-stage. Conveying a sense of nostalgia, yet anchored in the artist's signature painting style, these enthusiastic works convey the genuineness of the clown as a subject. Fully illustrated with 56 artwork reproductions. Essay by Dr. Julia Friedman. Interview with the artist by Janet Bishop, the Thomas Weisel Family Chief Curator and Curator of Painting and Sculpture at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
