A powerful story of love and sacrifice that The Boston Globe calls an ""extraordinary achievement by an emerging playwright."" Cuban exile Sonia is forced to relive her tumultuous childhood when her only son enlists in the military following 9/11. Using humor and sensitivity, Sonia Flew paints a lyrical portrait of two families in two countries over a 40-year span. A L.A. 11/14 Update: Changed from 1 to 2 stars. My initial frustration wore off, though I still fail to comprehend many of the characters' attitudes towards Sonia in Act I. Honestly, minus the domestic abuse, if the setting and plot within Act II served as the sole focus of the play then I would probably give it a solid four. I love the political tensions and the historical context within this second half, and I wish there were more of it.
I forgot to update this a few days ago oopsies I definitely liked act 2 better than act 1, but this play has so many weird elements that they never tied up ?? like sonia's dad (forgetting his name rn) hitting pilar? that was never talked about again? or even just the reunion between zak and sonia....i was convinced he died in the explosion. not my fav read.

This play was good, but the only major flaw it struggled with was that it had two separate stories. I was lost about Sonia's past until I reached the very end of Act 2. I had to reread Act 1 after I finished Act 2 to understand the grand scheme of the play. Translating this onstage may help fill the holes that came up when reading it the first time around. In general, this play had a powerful message that the characters went through, but understanding the intricacies was too complicated.
This play was listened to as an audiobook. I would highly recommend it. The characters were enthralling in their dialogue, unique in their personality, and exciting in their delivery. I found myself more than once laughing at some of the back-and-forth between Sonia and her daughter/husband. Overall, I am glad that I listened to this play as I would like to see it live one day.
