Katie Lee (born October 23, 1919 in Tucson, Arizona, United States) is an Arizona folk singer, writer, actress, photographer and environmental activist.

She graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. After that, she went on to study with two of the most successful folksingers of the 1940s, Burl Ives and Josh White.

After joining a rafting trip in the Grand Canyon she became a regular on river trips on the Colorado River and joined the opposition to the construction of Glen Canyon Dam. In September and October 1955 she, Tad Nichols, and Frank Wright traveled through and documented parts of the Glen Canyon that later were to be submerged.

I love Katie Lee, she's such a spunky inspiring person who has a heart wrenching way of telling stories. Sandstone Seduction was different from past books I've read by her but still amazing.

Katie Lee is a folk song writer, bar room performer, Hollywood actress & more.

Traipse back and forth with Katie as she colorfully shares with you her wildly hilarious escapades as a brazen & bold river runner, ardent environmental activist , nude bicycle rider & excellent curser.

Katie's description of men, rivers, taverns, sand and rock are a kick to read:

"Kevin Rime was built lean, compact, not real tall- what you might call wiry- with muscles that didn't bulge beneath his smooth, tanned skin. His brown - eyed gaze was direct and inquisitive, yet the way he looked at you from beneath his brows with head tilted slightly down offered an appealing air of shyness. This was accentuated by a straight-line mouth tucked into a constant smile, all framed by ears that fanned out to embrace the wind"

Her analogies a stitch:
" friends were snapping at each other like looney birds in a tank of toxins" or
" It was hotter' n a fresh fucked fox in a forest fire".

Katie pulls no punches. She says what she feels. And while you read this book you can feel what she says.

I look forward to reading more from Katie Lee.

I was inspired to pick this up after seeing Katie Lee's new movie/slideshow, "Love Song to Glen Canyon." She answered questions afterward, and she is one hell of a spitfire, filled with piss and vinegar and humor even at 88. I want to be her when I grow up.

Reads kind of like...Ed Abbey Lite. Some great stories, some not-so-great.

A rollicking ride through Katie Lee's memories in the wild and among notable figures in the Southwest. She's sassy and sometimes angry, always looking for a good time. She's a bit condescending and somehow more deserving of the wilderness than the rest of us schmucks, but I can't deny her passion for the wild lands and rivers that are still vanishing in spite of her efforts. A fun read.
