I ordered this together with another photography guidebook (
The Photographer's Eye
) right before my trip next week. I was looking for tips to improve my photography without having to deal with too many technical details (I only have a point & shoot camera anyway), but more from a composition & interest point of view. I'm not aiming to become a professional, just to take more interesting, nicer pictures. And Travel Photography was, for me, the best one. The most accessible. I've read through the book quickly (not enough time to give it a thorough read before I leave on holiday) but even so I've immediately added a bunch of markers to keep track of some straight-forward tips that will come in handy. Glad I bought this.

This is an excellent beginners guide to travel photography. I have tried to read several other photography manuals in the past but have always given up because either the language was too jargonistic or the writing style and visual presentation were insufficient to hold my attention. The Lonely Planet guide on the other hand is both educational and entertaining and I am certain I have improved my photography skills significantly as a result of reading it.
While I believe it is correct to call this book a beginner's guide, I think it would be of most benefit to people who have some prior knowledge and experience of photography and who know how to use basic camera settings relating to aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure control, light metering etc. All of these concepts and controls are nevertheless explained in the book but I think at times it could be a little overwhelming for the complete novice. For me, I found the book was pitched perfectly to my level, interests and experience and it has left me with an even greater enthusiasm for travel photography than before.

Helpful, and packed with info. There's even a chapter for all you insane people who use only your phone for taking travel pictures! ;)

Not only is this an excellent book on travel photographer, but it’s also an easily digestible crash course in digital photography. I got this from the library but I am very interested in purchasing my own copy.

This book made so many concepts finally click for me! The author is just so clear and concise. I found his instructions and insights to be pitch perfect for me.The book is also helpful for taking pictures around where we live.The author covers everything about travel photography from getting through customs with your equipment to selling your pictures once you get home.

A rip off! Full of such important information like
The lens focuses the light onto an image sensor made up of light-sensitive cells.
Who would have imagined?! I thought it was humidity sensitive cells.unwanted images can be deleted and only selected pictures printed

2009 3rd edition. (important as cameras evolve quickly). Pretty basic book (for 368 pages) but most non professional photographers would pick up a few ideas from it that they have not come across before.

First half of the book is trash. Second half is pretty useful.
Some of the advice wasn’t applicable to me (shooting film), but might be to you. Some of the examples are outdated (who uses Flickr anymore?)

Leuk boek. Beetje outdated misschien. De voorbeelden waren allemaal met film geschoten, tsja dan zit je aan een iso vast.

This was a book I ordered with some 'points' I had to spend and I think it was a good choice.
This is a book that should suit most photographers, from beginners to intermediate level. The first half of the book is dedicated to the basics: what equipment you need, what that equipment does, and technical explanations of things such as aperture and shutter speed. This is good for the novice, but even had something to teach me at intermediate level. The author also offers tips for keeping your camera safe and in good working order while travelling.
The next section of the book looks at different types of travel photography, offering advice on getting the most from a range of subjects such as landscapes, seascapes and portraits. I found the example pictures and the technical information (what focal length etc was used) really useful as a means to demonstrate the techniques the author was suggesting.
Finally there was a section on storing and editing digital photos. This again is good for a novice, but I found I didn't really need to read much in that section as it was all stuff I was already familiar with.
So, overall a good and informative read with plenty of colour plates and photographic examples. This is still a fairly large/heavy book, so it's not one you'd carry with you on your travels, but it is a good guide to read at home before you depart. Well worth a look for any keen photographers looking to move from holiday snaps to works of art.

The photography bug has bitten me and made me read this primer on travel photography.
I had high hopes from this book, and it did a good job of meeting my expectations and then some.
Like a "For Dummies" book, it covers all bases for a beginner and helps you get a leg up in your nascent photography hobby (or a possible career, who knows!). The photos accompanying each topic give a good idea of what he is talking about and are a treat to be beheld.
The technology that he talks about is pretty outdated, but we can't blame the guy considering the pace with which the technology gets revolutionized these days.
I skipped the part on film and video cameras; I also left the part about monetizing your work for the day when I feel confident enough about selling my wares.
But wait, there's more!

This is a decent book on travel photography, and indeed on photography in general. It's full of great advice on how to go about shooting fantastic images around the world, all within a small book that's perfect for sticking in your camera bag whilst on your travels.
The only downside is that for someone like myself, who only deals with digital photography, too much time is spent discussing film photography, which sometimes gives the impression that the book isn't quite as up to date as it could be.

I travel quite a bit around Europe and always have my camera with me however a week of reading this book has made the technical specifics of taking a good photo stick more so that my recent 20 weeks of a beginners and then intermediate photography course did. Really clear to understand and lots of chapters re: equipment/packing etc.
It’s also worth nothing that the author Richard L’Anson was one of the subjects of the Netflix series ‘Tales By Light’ which brought many of the photos on the book to life!

Useful manual. Fairly concise, but with enough information to still be helpful to people like me, who know the basic technical stuff pretty well but have plenty to learn about composition and material. Not much of it is actually specific to "travel", but then why would taking a picture of some other city be magically different from taking one of where I live?

Overall an ok beginners introduction to travel photography. Nothing special, the photos included were nice. The content - well explained, good tips and tricks. The physical book is quite impractical for taking it with you on trips, however from time to time you could skip through it to get some ideas / inspiration for your next trip and how to photograph it.

Primarily advice for DSLR camera owners, but gives a lot of good advice about when to get the best light, how to pre-plan for travel photography, and photography techniques for travel situations (festivals, shop windows, etc.)

I thought this book was great for an amateur photographer like me. It coached me on how to prepare for the journey, what to bring for the journey, and how to think out of the box and take photos from different perpectives and angles.

Needs an updated edition. The photography basics on composition, exposure, etc. are timeless, but the extensive number of pages dedicated to film photography and transporting/developing said film is definitely dated.

This is a very thorough resource! Everything from the artistic to the technical aspects of travel photography is covered. There is even a chapter on editing with Adobe Lightroom that was very helpful.

great book and although written with non digital cameras in mind, it still gives lots of relevant tips that cover all areas of travel photography. A great basics book for those just starting out.
