Little did I expect while going into this novel. The past Chinese novels I've read were merely to jump back into my reading and I successfully say that this book surely did that for me.
"The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched- they must be felt with the heart" - Helen Keller
The book for me was the epitome of the above quote. The reason Helen Keller came to my mind was mostly due to the fact that the translator had added a quote of hers and while reading, this propped to my mind.
Life in general is an unpredictable string adventures just strung together haphazardly. One does not know what will brought forward for them and one does not know how life would end up. You might end up losing everyone you love or you might end up finding your one true love. The latter is always thought to be the better of the two for obvious reasons but is the former bad too? Compared to a person who never had anyone to love, would you think that having to at least love someone for a while is good enough? Or is the pain too much and you rather not have anyone to love. After all if one who does not love, they would never be hurt. One can argue over these facts for a long time and still not come up with an answer. These thoughts were running in my head constantly as I read this book.
One can say it is completely diverted from the true aspect of the story. The story in simple words is a romance story and there's nothing more to it than that but what makes this book stand out more than others that I give such a long praise about it? It is the very simple fact at how it celebrates the unsung heroes of the world. We have a constant barge of books, dramas and movies about doctors, technicians, firefighters, IT geeks and still there are many out there who are not given the praise that they deserve. And out author successfully manages to capture one such person. Being a k-drama fan I have seen many dramas based on journalists and news anchors. They show the sparkling life of those in front of the camera and how their romance flourishes with other journalists and the most you can see is how they have to fight dirty politicians but this story brought forward a part of journalism that I have never read before. War correspondents.
The beauty of the book is how they bring about not only what the protagonist goes through but how it affects people around him too. The choices one makes thinking it is for the betterment of others ultimately shows that it was a purely selfish act. This becomes the ultimate climax of the story for me. Before jumping right into that we should first introduce the two main characters, Ji Chengyang and Ji Yi. The two who were each others healing sunshines. At the beginning it was as if ChenYang was Ji Yi's guardian angel and ray of sunshine, ultimately we see that they were each others guardian angels. The story spans a long time from 1997 to 2008. From a 11 year old Ji Yi to a 22 year old Ji Yi and a 20 year old ChenYang and 31 year old ChenYang. Reading this, one could misunderstand the situation easily and think many things. After all I did mention that this was a romance story, yes it is a romance story but also a story of growth. We see a self sufficient girl not wanting to trouble anyone to an independent woman who finally finds love. We see their relationship blossom, from just giving a helping hand to finally awakening their love. It is not a gritty romance where a girl is groomed for liking of the boy as one would think but one where you can see how and where the two actually found their love. I would not say it is pure love. Depending on people's beliefs they can say the under-aged romance was not necessary (Actually they figure out their feelings only when she is 17 years old, still a bit under-aged. She had skipped two grades in school and was actually in college) but we can see how their maturities actually helped them become who they are. There are many ups and downs in their relationship, considering the morality of the situation and also considering that relationship between their families but over time they find solutions to it.
The story is beautifully written and I want to give due thanks to our talented translator Hoju who did a brilliant job at translating and managing to conserve the beauty of the novel. Every single sentence really got to my heart and by the end of the book, despite it having a happy ending I felt thoroughly drained. The hurt and the happiness felt by the characters were deeply felt by me too. The story was beautiful beyond words but also melancholic. We do not get a proper ending with an extravagant wedding or children. It is a very realistic ending making the reader know that their future is not easy at all. Ji Yi herself will have to face many hardships in their relationship, ChengYang too has a future full of recovery both physically and mentally but the silver lining to all of that is that they have each other and in the end they have the family that Ji Yi found, the Ji family, who all love her incomparably. This ending reminded me of "The Girl He Used to Know" By Tracy Garvis. It too had a similar ending where we know that the protagonists are together but we also know that they would have a hard time in the future. Subsequently even the time lines are somewhat similar. Another beautiful part of this story was the small inserts of real life events that occurred. From the 9/11 to the releasing of Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring, we are taken on the journey with them by seeing the things that happened in the world. This proves further how the author did try her best to make the book more realistic. The author herself has acknowledged that this book took the longest fro her to write and that it almost felt like a gift for herself and as she was also a 80's baby like Ji YI.
Even though I have written such a long review, one can say I am looking at the story through rose colored glasses and being blind to it shortcoming. I will agree with them too. Maybe I am pointing only the good of the story as there are few things such as multiple plots happening, this could add to the beauty of the book. Despite all of this I truly think this book is of a superior quality to the others. Now I am going to dive into the other book in the same series. Mo Bao Fei Bao, you are surely up the list of my favorite authors now. Some sweet and some realistic translated quotes for your reading.

Cộng thêm nữ main 1986 nên cảm giác khịa mạnh =))))
Rồi cảm thấy thời gian đã trôi rất nhanh rất nhanh rất dài rất lâu, giữa bể dâu người ấy có thể ở đâu đó không phải là không có, nhưng đã không còn thời gian để có thể slowly bước vào tym anh ôi đông quá nữa ròi =)))
Rì viu kỷ niệm tháng năm này coa cái app viết thư Slowly zui zui luôn hen!

You should not miss this book if you know the book and have time to check my review. It is the great story, one of the best i have ever read, I dare to say. Not just the love. But all of the "pelajarn hidup" are all worth your time for reading this book. I happened to read this book in English translated by Hoju, thank you so much for your best effort.

Truyện nhẹ nhàng. Cách kể chuyện làm cho tôi có cảm giác mọi thứ trong cuộc sống thật nhẹ nhàng, đơn giản, kể cả công việc ký giả chiến trường. Để có cuộc sống nhẹ nhàng phải nhìn nhận cuộc sống dưới góc độ bình thản nhất, ví như Quý Thành Dương vượt qua mưa bom bão đạn, thiên tai vẫn bình thản, điềm tĩnh nhìn đời, dù với bệnh tật, khó khăn thủ thách vẫn vươn lên mạnh mẽ. Tất cả là nhờ tình yêu anh dành cho Ký Ức ư? Tôi không nghĩ như vậy, đó chỉ là một phần, mà phần còn lại theo tôi nghĩ đó là nội tâm mạnh mẽ, là thái độ lạc quan, điềm tĩnh với đời. Theo tôi, một người đàn ông phải vậy! Nhân vật Kỷ Ức cũng được khắc họa thật đẹp, cô tha thứ bao dung và hiểu chuyện, biêt nghĩ cho cảm nhận của người khác. Dù người nhà không thương yêu cô nhưng cô vẫn không oán hận một lời. Nhiều lúc đọc đến đoạn cuối khi ông nội Quý, Quý Thành Dương đến nhà ông nội Kỷ để nói chuyện, tôi ước gì tác giả hãy cho Kỷ Ức có những lời nói mạnh mẽ hơn thể hiện thái độ của mình với ông nội Kỷ, chú thím minh. Theo tôi nhân vật này nhẫn nhịn quá.

buku ini memikat saya dari awal, apalagi saya memang suka cerita dimana ML dan FL memiliki jarak umur yang cukup jauh. Dalam buku ini ML sembilan tahun lebih tua dari FL...
Sepertinya MBFB satu generasi dengan saya, sehingga peristiwa, nama, lagu yang disebutkannya di buku ini membangkitkan kenangan-kenangan lama saya.
Memang MBFB menulis buku ini khusus untuk kenangan-kenangan tersebut karena ia takut saat tua nanti memori tersebut akan hilang begitu saja...
Sepertinya MBFB satu generasi dengan saya, sehingga peristiwa, nama, lagu yang disebutkannya di buku ini membangkitkan kenangan-kenangan lama saya.

I think the fact that I was also born in the 80's and experiencing many of the major events illustrated in the book while growing up, had a big influence in me sticking throughout the storyline and eager for them characters to find happiness regardless. In a way I was also reading this story with a bit of heavy heart and emotionally up down because of many memories being recalled along the way. Another great piece from MBFB and Hoju did a great job on translation as always <3

Có thể là bộ ngôn tình hay nhất trong mấy năm gần đây t đọc luôn 🥹 ngôn cổ vẫn là cái gì đó 🤌 ít nhất thì hình tượng nn9 cũng phải viết cho ra gì như bộ này chứ tr, mấy bộ ngôn gần đây xuất bản phải gọi là vừa dở vừa cringe 😬
