This English Standard Version translation of the Bible divides the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs into 365 readings. From a reader's perspective, you read about 8 minutes of the Old Testament every day, 5 minutes of the New Testament, and a few minutes of Psalms and Proverbs.
The Bible is nicely arranged with a readable font and clear divides between the daily readings. The translation is easy to read although there are some odd modern words at times. There are few paratextual notes and none within the daily sections which means that you focus on the scripture itself.
For the past few years I have done the daily Chronological Bible in NIV. The translation between this (ESV) and that (NIV) did not appear overly different. I like the fact that both have the Bible arranged for daily readings in one physical book. This version has the advantage of presenting the books as they appear in a standard Bible (as opposed to switching between books in the chronological version) and I think it's good to read from the OT and NT every day. However, I also found the switch between different parts of the Bible confusing at times (I often said it gave me whiplash jumping between four very different contexts and voices). I also thought some of the choices where to split the daily readings were odd, especially when there were splits in the middle of Psalms. At other times, I thought there were very long readings for sections that were quite dense and then quite short readings for sections that were easy to understand. Nevertheless, as a whole, this Bible is well divided and I imagine that any changes to the divisions would cause different problems.
Love that the Bible is credited to Anonymous. Goodreads isn't about to be like "Bible, by God".
This was surprisingly accessible. Each day you get a big chunk of Old Testament, a littler chunk of New Testament, a Psalm that leans heavily into the words "steadfast love", and a Proverb. I'm a Proverb man myself. Like the Art of War or the stoic aphorisms, but by the big man himself instead of a Chinese general or Roman senator.
I'm not going to review the Bible. Refer to Eugene Hutz's Supertheory of Supereverything and Super Taranta. Better minds than mine.
Reading this in the morning and then followed by the devotional by Pastor Larry Stockstill gives you peace. He has a commentary on each of the books that you just read. The last day of December is almost sad. But a new year ahead puts us even closer to the return of Jesus.
I think this is my favorite way to read through the Bible. I love the variety of the readings and the amount is just enough to be hearty each day, but not so much that it’s impossible to do daily. I’m deeply grateful to be in the Word!
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 ESV
This is a great one year Bible plan, but my old Kindle was completely unable to handle it. Broken links, page turns crashing the book and even the entire device - by December I had to read it on my phone instead. So beware if you have an older device.
Great to have the Bible and other reference books together! Can share verse right from my reading to Facebook, or copy and paste to send in texts, messages or emails!
