Amongst the British new towns the achievement at Washington is truly remarkable. Twenty years ago the place from which the family of America's first president took their name was a straggle of mining villages marred by over a century of accumulated industrial dereliction. Since 1965 the Development Corporation has built a new town that houses a population approaching 60,000, treble the original number, and has attracted 270 different companies on to 10 new industrial estates. The author was General Manager from the new town's inception until his retirement in 1980. There are over 100 black and white and 30 colour illustrations and full Appendices and Index.
