Not bored but I feel that series should have rounded up by now. It's too long and it's slowly outstaying it's welcome.

I hate to be a downer, but I don't know how the gang's making it out of this one alive. Like 3 different losing scenarios just happened simultaneously. This volume is what the apocalypse looks like. And I'm expected to believe the gang survives 10 more volumes?? Insane.

While volume 17 technically contains a complete "new" arc it is an immediate continuation of the last one and the series in general builds off all that has come before. This is not the place to start reading - go back to the beginning.

The Claws of Memory (complete: parts 1-6) follows the major power shift at the end of The Lamentation of the Earth and features the intersection of many of the remaining players, and a new danger that might be greater than them all. The developments here are intense, and once again surprising. It amazes me how well and how often Yagi can spring the unexpected on the reader this late in the series and still have everything build and flow naturally and logically. Battle rages throughout the volume and several characters are permanently affected.

I can't get into more detail without major spoilers so suffice to say this is a pivotal installment and with the conflict within just getting started the next volumes promise to be the same. Highly recommended.

All hell breaks loose.

World: The art is fantastic, the new Awakened One is simply stunning. The world building is solid, with some answers and new pieces added to the picture. Add to that the old pieces from the past come back into play. The world is still fairly wonky and the depth is not that well considered the magic and power stuff is still all over the place. However it does still work, it’s not nearly broken yet...plus it’s so cool.

Story: This is an all battle book. Wow all hell breaks loose, like the amount of insanity and stakes and pieces is a bit overwhelming and you sense what Clare and the group feel like. The action is frantic, the stakes amazingly high. That’s about it, it’s a battle arc.

Characters: Some nice little piece of development for Clare and Raphaela and what happened to her. Some nice little pieces of Beth and Alicia and what happened to them. Some nice little pieces of Riful. Not a lot of depth but enough to put each in their place for the battle.

Nonstop action.

Onward to the next book!

3.5/5 What the hell is going on.... Ok so Clare runs off to rescue Renee from Riful who is using her to try to awaken the fused Rafaela.

Shit goes sideways when Alicia and Beth show up with the Abyss Feeders. They have been sent to take out Riful now that Isley is out of play.

Helen and Deneve show up to help and the Rafaela creature awakens further complicating things.

This volume is pretty much one giant brawl. It's exciting and well drawn but a little unnecessarily confusing.

This was a good volume! The tension slowly build as more and more sides clashed, and a big battle slowly started up that was mostly unexpected for all parts involved. It was super engaging reading how it all unfurled! Mostly this series shines when it mixes moments of character focused action and lore revaluation and then over again, and this volume was certainly that!

Io i volumi di Claymore non li leggo, ME LI BEVO! E questo poi è al cardiopalma. Questa volta la vedo davvero brutta per Clare e le altre, ormai manca davvero poco al finale di questo stupendo manga.

Claymore: The Claws of Memory, Vol. 17 opens with two of my favorite characters, Miria and Galatea, discussing a strange yoma burst of energy felt in the South. While discussing the possibility of it being Isley, they detect a stranger approaching who is suppressing their yoma aura. It turns out to be Dietrich, who delivers an ominous message from Helen and Deneve.

Meanwhile, Dauf stumbles upon Clare, Cynthia, and Uma in the West. Escaping Dauf's attack with barely all of their limbs, Clare decides to leave Cynthia and the injured Uma behind to follow Dauf in hopes he will lead her to find Rafaela. While Clare and Dauf cause a ruckus through the castle, Riful decides to find the source of all the commotion. In doing this, she leaves Renee an opening to successfully escape.

Clare narrowly misses a confrontation with the awakened Riful, and finds herself pulled into Rafaela's consciousness. I found this part quite confusing. I'm not sure if it was the late hour I read this, or if the conversation was really muddled that it just confused me to all heck. In their final battle, Rafaela bestows upon Clare all her memories and emotions so that Clare can find the answer to the question she seeks.

Rafaela's actions triggers the awakening of the Rafaela/Luciela monstrosity and the Destroyer is born. The surge of yoma energy is felt by many across the land. My favorite duo, Helen and Deneve, immediately head towards it as soon as they sense a glimmer of Clare's energy with it. As Clare wakes up, she lays eyes on the strangely angelic-looking Destroyer and understands Rafaela's purpose.

While Riful and Dauf admire the monster from afar, they are attacked by the Abyss Eaters. I personally don't care much for Riful, so seeing the zombies devour her body parts made me sadistically happy. As Riful becomes zombie dinner, Alicia and Beth arrive to destroy Riful. Karma sure is a bitch.

As the Destroyer fully awakens, it launches an attack that travels great distances. Its far-reaching viral spears nearly take out Riful and Dauf, and even Raki and Priscilla in a neighboring town. But the nightmare is just beginning. The spears then transform into awakened beings that attack everything in sight, but also spread their disease through the wounds they afflict.

Deneve gets infected by an awakened being, and, without hesitation, cuts off the affected limb. I just love Helen and Deneve and their badassery. They make this series so freakin' awesome.

Riful is having a very bad day. Shucks! When she tries to escape with Dauf, they come under attack again and are nearly devoured by the zombies. Unfortunately, Riful is surprisingly saved by the awakened Alicia. The ending shows Beth impaled by one of the viral spears. I'm so curious to find out Beth's fate. Will she become a different type of monster from the infection?

The suspenseful ending has me excited to read the next volume. My wish for the next volume is that it will be the Helen and Deneve show with Miria and Galatea stepping in for some of the action. Crossing my fingers!

Intense, with all sorts of factions and creatures coming together in bloody battle. I'm starting to like evil and psychopathic Riful of the West, who can be quite matter of fact about everything, even when some things are trying to eat her alive.

Also, with all the "and this creature is stronger than the previous ones" situations going on, I'm starting to fear that the last volume will feature a supremely powerful self-destruct button for the entire universe.

This one just gets a little ridiculous. I mean how powerful are these uncontrollable creatures going to get? Wtf is up with Luciela and Rafaela forming their own absolute monster generator?

Today's post is on Claymore volume 17: The Claws of Memory by Norihiro Yagi. It is the seventeenth the long running Claymore series, you need to have read the first sixteen volumes to understand the story. It is 189 pages long and is published by Shonen Jump Advanced. The cover has a close-up of Clare of it. The intended reader is someone who likes dark plots, high action, and strong female characters. There is mild foul language, no sexuality, and lots of violence in this book. The story is told from third person close of the main character. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- With the balance of power broken after Isley's defeat by the foreious Abyss Feeders, the Organization, central hub of the Claymores, deploys Alicia and Beth to the West to go after the renegade Riful. In turn, Riful continues her scheme to Awaken the remains of the powerful Rafaela. As these dire powers all finally collide, Clare and her comrades must fight for their lilves in the titanic battle that ensues.

Review- In this volume we truly get to see how terrible the Abyss Feeders are. They are sent after Riful and the fight with her is sickening. She is very powerful and has not been hounded by them like Isley was. But then the field of battle changes when Rafaela Awakens. She and her sister become something called the Destroyer. She does not move but is sending out spikes that will infect anyone it touches with some part of her new self. Everyone is just trying to get out of the way. I have no idea what Clare and Co. can do against her now but I will see soon even.

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this volume with my own money.

If y chance you are reading this and haven't started the series yet, I would advise extreme caution unless you are a committed manga reader. This series exemplifies everything I find insufferable regarding poor storytelling. The dialogue is horribly expository, and lacks any type of poetic flow, nuance or beauty. It generally feels like it was written by a ten year old, going about its plotting in the most ham fisted way possible. Once every few volumes you get a plot device that gives the book a boost for an arc, but then its back to the same dull and dreary story and horrendously bloated fight scenes which interest me about as much as acquiring an STI does. The characters are as engaging as dirty dishwater. If they aren't speaking in an wholly unbelievable way, they are looking shocked, puffing for breath or pulling a shouty face. I can't even tell half of these girls apart anymore, as despite the different haircuts, the plot is to inane to try and keep up with. I would continue to point out the flaws of this book, but I am so over it, I really just can't be bothered. Besides, if I can bring myself to read any more (Why did I buy the box set??) then I'll need something else fresh to complain about. Ignore the consistently high scores this series gets. 2/5

The series is a rollercoaster ride. One I’ve ridden before. If you’re’ familiar with RPG games you’ll understand the sentiment that boss fights can last too long. This feels kinda` like that. And events have escalated way too quickly. The entirety of Claymore has hinged on warriors clawing their way out of desperation, er , at least when it’s at its best. An ingredient is definitely missing in volume 17.

Only ten left until completion. The anime would probably be the better route. I can see Claymore being one of the first few mangas where the anime would have superiority. I’m sure a cleaner path accompanied by music with animation makes for a fun ride.

P.S. No intention of watching it.

Sure.

I think I'm running into a common limiting principle of this kind of fantasy/action story telling. Its not necessarily a "ruiner", but whenever we get go zombie army controlled by nefarious bureaucracy I kinda shut down a bit.

Its really that in most cases it is a creativity void. It becomes a problem for characters to brute force their way through which just isn't super compelling. Hopefully they find a creatively motivated solution that makes this all make sense but I've been feeling thus decline gradually

The amount of energy released in this Volume was insane. We saw Riful in her true form, Alicia & Beth in action, Deneve rip her own arm off and use it as a weapon (what a badass!), Claire release her yoga power for the first time in 7 years to use her Quicksword, and most importantly, the birth of a creature of the Abyss - Rafaela & Luciela. The body shape is suspiciously familiar... and I wonder what was that particular memory for Claire to sift through... wink wink

The Claymore series is confusing me in the manner of television series. Now I'm not sure who the good guys are and who the bad guys. It appears that some of the good guys work for bad guys who are at battle with other bad guys yet some of the good guys are forced their code to their bosses to battle good guys as well. I keep plugging along to see where this is going.

Things are getting even crazier!

After the defeat of Isley, the creatures are moving to Riful to defeat her as well. Alicia and Beth are there as well and a battle ensues. The two claymore that were fused together awaken to create easily the craziest awakened monster ever. It is gigantic in size and it actually shoots out awakened monsters that infect living beings.
