For me, Petru Cimpoesu is one of the greatest contemporary writers and especially of short stories (I haven't yet tried one of his novels). Besides skillfully managing to stay on the fine line between parody and drama, he proves it is able to create great characters. And this may be the first book where I wasn't bother by the meta-fiction passages occurring in some stories.

Each story has his own premise even if it may sometimes be just a clever twist when the conflict is resolved. Overall, the entire collection of short stories is homogenous, revolving around the colorful Romanian society, especially Moldovans from both sides of the Prut. I think this is a very good premise and well executed one, so I will rate it with a 5.

Regarding the form, I already mentioned the fine parody intertwined with drama and the meta-fiction. There are also other great literary devices used and I'll let you discover them as you read it. For me, the most important regarding the form is to be present but not to be obvious at reading. This is why, especially for the few passages of meta-fiction, I will rate it with a 4 for form.

In terms of originality, there may be other novels and short stories on the Romanian society, but the closest book I can think of is Caragiale's Momente şi schiţe. Perhaps except the language innovation from Caragiale and the different time setting, the two mentioned books are pretty much from the same league. As Caragiale is one of the my favored authors, I will give it a 5 for the level of originality.

The characters are simply great. Petru is a fine observer of human beings and understands very well the basic human psychology. Thus he is able to enhance just the traits that are comic in his characters. I cannot rate it with less than 5.

Regarding the complexity and difficulty, from time to time we get to see what kind of work is behind these stories via the meta-fiction passages. It is not simple at all to write them. But the end product was mostly hiding these difficulties and made it look pretty easy. So I will rate it with another 5 for complexity and difficulty.

In terms of credibility, as I was also living those years I did not noticed any significant deviation from reality. All these could have been happening and if they did not happen as they were described, for sure the reality was pretty close. Therefor my rating for credibility is 5.

The last criteria is edition. I enjoyed greatly this hardcover edition with sewn spines that are perfect for reading on flat surfaces. The dust jacket and the quality paper make up a high end product that I enjoyed reading. I have not other option than to rate it with a 5.

To summarize, I am glad I discovered Petru Cimpoesu and I'll definitively read other books he wrote. I am also slightly envious as I wished I could write as good as him. All in all, my final rating for this novel is 4.85, which I will round it to a 5 on Goodreads system.
