A study of the black bands of Giovanni Medici following his death in 1526, through until their surrender after the collapse of the army of the League of Cognac during its withdrawal from the siege of Naples in 1528. The black bands were mercenary infantry companies, a mixture of pike and shot, that had served under Giovanni. After his death they came under the (loose) control of the Florentine Republic, which had expelled the Medici.

The book is full of interesting detail and colour drawn from contemporary documents. To a reader with an interest in the Italian Wars there is quite a bit in the book that will be of interest. Probably not as interesting to a general reader. Overall it was an enjoyable read and filled in for me a part of the Italian Wars I hadn't read much about before (the siege of Naples).
