Cryptic Cravings

Rate this book
The morbidly monotonous Dullsville has finally become the most exciting place on earth now that Raven is madly in love with her hot vampire boyfriend Alexander, and a crew of vampires has taken residence in Dullsville's old mill. Raven discovers Jagger's plan to open a new club, The Crypt, right here in Dullsville. But is it her dream come true, or her worst nightmare? Raven and Alexander have to figure out what the nefarious vampire has in store for Dullsville's teen and vampire population. Can Raven convince Jagger to listen to her plans to make the Crypt the morbidly magnificent dance club it could be? Will it be safe for mortals and vampires alike?

And as Sebastian and Luna's relationship heats up, Raven wonders about her own amorous fate: Will Alexander ever turn her? Does he crave her and does he want to spend eternity together? And what does she really want?

With cryptic secrets and cravings, this eighth installment in the Vampire Kisses series is a romantic and mysterious thrill ride.

Before I took pen to paper, I was an actress. I attended a local university majoring in theatre and spent a summer in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where I learned about the “Old Bard” from amazingly talented teachers.

When I returned from London, I relocated to Chicago where I lived for five years. There, I graduated from the Second City Training Center and performed improv, Shakespeare, comedies and dramas--I even sang and danced on a cruise boat--without falling in Lake Michigan! A classmate of mine from Second City and I created and performed a two woman show for a year before I braved it alone doing stand-up comedy. It was during this time I began to write an adult novel about a rock star--I had always enjoyed writing...

Fast forward a couple of years along with a move home where I was performing “stand-up” at comedy clubs in the area. On a plane to LA to decide my fate-- “to move to LA or not to move to LA” that is the question, my big bro, Mark, coincidentally with the same last name as mine (author of PRINCES IN EXILE, DREAMS OF THE SOLO TRAPEZE and STARCROSSED) handed me a young adult book he found at the library he thought I’d like to read during the flight.

As I read the book, I thought, ‘I can do this!’

I returned from LA, and instead of moving there, I wrote my story about the rock star as a young adult novel and called it JOHNNY LIGHTNING.
Mark, my writing mentor, edited JL for me. He was kind enough to send the manuscript to his publisher in Belgium--Facet--and they published it! In Dutch!

I was now on a new life path!

In 2001 HarperCollins made me an offer I couldn’t refuse! Not only was HarperCollins going to publish TEENAGE MERMAID, but it was in a language I could read and book stores I could walk into! HarperCollins also bought VAMPIRE KISSES and COMEDY GIRL.

It was a dream come true!

Since beginning my new life path, VAMPIRE KISSES, TEENAGE MERMAID, and MY MOTHER, THE CLOWN have been published by Facet in Belgium and JOHNNY LIGHTNING has been published in Germany by Ravensburger.

Then my fabulous editor at HarperCollins asked me for a sequel to VAMPIRE KISSES!
HarperCollins published VAMPIRE KISSES 2--KISSING COFFINS and now the soon to be released VAMPIRE KISSES 3--VAMPIREVILLE. I am currently writing VAMPIRE KISSES 4!

When I'm not writing about the love affair between vampire obsessed, goth girl Raven and my favorite mysterious dark-eyed hottie, Alexander Sterling, I enjoy working on my other novels, shopping for Hello Kitty items, and attempting to gain control of the remote from my boyfriend.

I read all seven of the other Vampire Kisses books and, while I knew they were childish, I still was able to enjoy them. This book was beyond childish. It was completely ridiculous.

The whole storyline was just stupid. First Raven finds out about a club and she doesn't want the club in her town. Then she does. Then she doesn't. Then she does but with restrictions. And she's the one to give the restrictions to the vampire in charge...well, her and her boyfriend.

I just don't get it. Not only that, I just don't care either.

The dialogue was choppy and forced. The characters, who I remember being defined in the previous books, all blended together and sounded the same. Even Alexander, the vampire boyfriend, ended up sounding like the main character - a whiny, confused, teenage girl who can't seem to make up her mind about anything. I couldn't stand how quickly they changed their minds/opinions on things. I know teens do that to some degree, but not as much or as poorly as Raven and her gang. It was completely unbelievable.

I finished this book simply because I hate starting something and not finishing, although I was sorely tempted to do so with this one. If it hadn't been for my library buying this book at my request, I really might not have finished it...ever. I'm sorry to say that this book has turned me off of the author and I no longer plan to read her werewolf series which was on my TBR list.

Part of me is embarrassed to say I read these books, but I can't help it. There is just something about them that hooks me in.

Raven is a good heroine. She's a bit strange and obsessed, but it works for her. It was a little obnoxious to have these long paragraphs about the gothic clothes everyone wore. However, since this is the millionth book in the series I am used to it. I like Raven, but her relationship with Alexander bothers me. I'm not sure if she genuinely likes him or if she only hangs onto him because he is a vampire.

Alexander is the main lead. He's a nice guy. He really is, but I can't help thinking he's a bit bland and boring. At least when he was Phoenix he had some personality. In real life he would be a great catch, but when reading a book I tend to like the more alpha, cocky guys.

I want more Trevor in this book and the next one! I think I love him. He's an annoying little douche, but there's something sweet about him. I liked how Raven and Trevor's relationship grew. They've come a long way from the first books where Raven beat him up in the woods. It was really cute how badly Trevor wanted her attention. Though Raven was a bit clueless. I can't believe it took her until just now to realize that Trevor might like her.

Sadly, there was no Raven and Jagger action. Other than Trevor, I like Jagger the best. I miss the other books where Jagger was always creeping on Raven and trying to catch her on sacred ground. The guy sounds gorgeous and he has a lot more umpf than Alexander.

I shouldn't have read the reviews before I read this one. Someone mentioned the overuse of the word 'nefarious' and I couldn't help noticing it throughout the book and mentally counting how many times it showed up. Overall though, I loved this book. A lot of people don't like this book, but I do. You just have to realize that this book is mainly fluff. It's not a literary masterpiece. It's a fun, light read— a book that you don't take too seriously.

Even though there are things I don't much care for in this book, I truly do like this series. I can't wait to find what happens next. I wonder what will happen between Jagger/Luna/Sebastian/etc now that the whole deceiption thing happened in the covenant. If I were Sebastian, I would be so angry if someone tried to trick me like that. Also, I wonder what will happen with Alexander's sister, Stormy. I got a bad vibe about her from what Alexander said, so maybe all hell will break loose. Lastly, I wonder if Sebastian will still be upset with Raven about her 'cheating' on Alexander with Phoenix. That is a very messed up situation and even I felt bad for Raven since Phoenix was just Alexander in a wig and leather pants.

And to Ellen Schreiber, please, please, please make Raven get together with Trevor or Jagger. They fit together better with Raven than poor Alexander!

I failed to see the problem with The Covenant. The concept worked perfectly in The Coffin Club, so what's the difference in the mill? Raven went on and on with lame excuses, but the bulk of the complaint was nothing really to worry about. She overreacted, and none of the other character corrected her, but agreed with her nonsense. Jagger is trying to run a club, not a slaughterhouse. I don't see how the vampires will be discovered unless they're careless. And the nefarious vampires will be in The Covenant, not in The Crypt. So the plot needed to be scraped. I'd like The Crypt to be in town; that means more characters and adventures. I think Raven wants to feel special, and she can't if everyone in town accepts her,and more goth girls come to Dullsville. I wish Alexander wold turn her already, and for Raven to make up her mind about it, instead of trying to convince him, yet debate in her head. I wish someone had lent Ellen a thesaurus. That love confession should not have been a dream: It was just a dream deus ex machina. I found myself agreeing more with Jagger, than the protagonists, which is very dreadful. Why did he give her an eternity ring instead of an engagement ring? Becky is a selfish prying crybaby; don't ask if you don't want to know, or can't handle knowing! Who died and gave Becky permission to tell a secret that isn't hers, and that she shouldn't know. Raven did right by not telling her; she's a ticking time bomb chatterbox. If Stormy is really his little sister, how come she hasn't been mentioned before? Either something isn't right about that, or Ellen just killed a kick butt cliffhanger with a dull and random one. This should have ended with Stormy's identify hidden (as Alexander's secret Romanian lover) and Raven admitting to herself that shes in love with Trevor. This is my least favorite book of the series.

I love the "Vampire Kisses" series. However, 'Cryptic Cravings' was not the stellar read the other books are. In this installment Raven and Alexander discover that their nemeses and vampire friends did not leave Dullsville and are planning to open a club in town. While Raven is excited about the prospect of a club in town, she is concern that the vampire secret will get out if Jaggar invites new vampires to town. Additionally, Jaggar's sister, Luna and Alexander's best friend, Sebastian have become quite close since he bit her.

The problem that I had with 'Cryptic Cravings' is that there just was not enough action. The book is only 211 pages long and really did not shed too much new light on the characters. I wish Ms. Schreiber would write a 400 page book that included more information and more action. It would have been a better read. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the book. It just was not my favorite. I hope that book 9 will be better or I may not continue on with the series.

I've been reading this series since they first came out. Year after year, I pre-order a hardcover version, not because the writing is amazing or because the storyline is riveting, not even because the characters are deep and round. No, I like this series because is fun and kind of silly, besides the fact that in high school I used to be the outcast goth chick wishing for my Alexander to come. But, as hard as I try not to take Vampire Kisses seriously, I simply can't ignore all the things that are, not wrong, but simply absent from this story.

We could begin with the fact that the author is not really good at writing. Seriously, 'His grip was strong, like that of as handsome athlete"? Even if we are reading from the perspective of a sixteen year old and even if the point of these series is to be light-hearted and simple, I see no reason why an editor didn't cross out this and labeled it as probably the worst use of figurative language ever. And someone really needs to find Schreiber a thesaurus. The word 'nefarious' is not the only one in the dictionary that defines something wicked or villanous. She used it more than 30 times and 5 of them were in the exact same page.

The story in this series is just one repetitive journey installment after installment. This time around at least she tried to steer away from the `someone new in town', but instead she dwelled on a ridiculous story about a new club opening and how Raven wanted to try being an interior designer. Is not about the story not making sense or falling in line with the previous ones, is about it being completely stupid and there being no reason why I should care or why no one has told this author that maybe it is time to either bring something new into the story or simply just end it.

The characters are even worse. I used to see myself in Raven, now I'm kind of embarrassed I ever saw similarities. She is immature, selfish and, honestly, kind of dumb. The rest of the cast has no personality and are as flat as this novel's storyline. Alexander, the only character that has saved this series for me in the last couple of installments, sort of fell from grace with this new novel, not because he did anything wrong, but because he was more of a shadow than an actual presence in the story; he had no weight, no role, he simply was just there and his confession in the last page came out of nowhere and simply serves as foundation for yet another story based on someone new, totally goth for no reason at all, coming into town and threatening his vampire secret. And Trevor. The story might've been passable if it wasn't for this particular annoyance. He is, by far, the most ridiculous of all characters. I understand the author's attempt at a love triangle, since they have become the rule in young adult fiction these past few years, but at least in other novels the characters involved are interesting, attractive and have something going for them. Trevor is stupid, a ridiculous stereotype with even more ridiculous dialog. Is not because he is the antagonist, is simply because he makes the reading experience painful.

In the end, nothing really happens in this book -yet again- and gives the reader more questions than answers that are not worth reading the next book for.

I wish I could say I'm done with these series just like I did with House of Night when it started to feel like an insult to the reader, but I can't, simply because they have become a part of me as a reader due to all the years awaiting its release and devouring it in one sitting - which is not hard to do considering they are incredibly short and so not worth close to 20 dollars. But, installment after installment, it just gets worse and, by the looks of it, it's not going to get better.

Review brought to you by OBS staff member Dawn

Summary:

Uh oh, Jagger want to open a club for vampires in Dullsville, but Raven and Alexander realize the danger it would bring. Raven suggests the club be for mortals. She jumps in to help decorate and prepare, while keeping a close eye on everyone involved.

Sebastian and Luna have gotten together and who knows what they’re up to, besides scaring the teenagers of Dullsville when Sebastian bites Luna.

Meanwhile, Raven is just dying (pun intended) to be turned although she’s not sure Alexander wants to be with her for eternity.

Alexander’s alter ego Phoenix makes an appearance as the club opens….

Review:

Cryptic Cravings is the 8th book in the series. Each book is fun, and this one is no exception. Raven is unique and open about everything. She is not the least bit afraid to be herself. It’s a powerful lesson that many young women need to learn. Be you no matter what!

I love the series because the characters are well developed and layered. There’s no gratuitous sex; it’s a character driven story.

Poor Alexander; when Raven wondered out loud about having Sebastian or Jagger change her, Alexander was hurt. Raven feels she’s waited long enough but I think she should be patient and wait for Alexander to be ready as well. Alexander needs her to understand it’s not an easy life. I love that Raven and Alexander have to work at it to communicate well. They can easily misunderstand one another or shut down and not communicate, which never helps. Alexander is super supportive with Raven’s insecurities. On Raven’s birthday Alexander gives her an eternity ring to reassure her.

Trevor continues to harass Raven but she handles it in stride although his aggressiveness is scary.

Meanwhile, Luna plans to marry Sebastian, but he’s not in on the secret. When he realizes it’s for real, he backs out. Jagger, Luna, Sebastian – are all very selfish and self-absorbed characters almost unable to consider others.

Becky takes pictures of the vamps but they don’t show up in the pictures. I enjoyed how Becky FINALLY found out the truth.

At the end of Cryptic Cravings Raven finds out Alexander has a sister named Stormy. I think she realizes that they don’t know each other very well – their relationship needs a lot more work.

I recommend The Vampire Kisses series. It’s a great read for adults and young adults. It’s a quick read, perfect for the beach.

Plot: I love this series. Even though they are short, they are wonderful quick reads and they leave me wanting more. I loved Cryptic Cravings, but I was disappointed with a lack of romance. Each VK does not disappoint with the constant romantic dates in the cemetary and the bunches of black roses, but this time around, we barely got any of that. I will say that the rest of the book did fill in the romantic blanks with good mystery and drama. But, Jagger opening up a club in Dullsville? I love the idea, but I wish we could have built up to the situation, not just having it pop out of nowhere. I wish the books were longer so we can not only see character progression, but plot progression as well.

Characters: Raven-She is a very reaslistic character. She wants to have her all-time dream come true, but isn't sure if she wants to leave everything behind for it. Raven is a great character because usually all the vampire's girlfriends want is the vampire and that's it, but Raven sees that she's leaving behind her family, friends, and human life. I did like when she was seeing that not only was she in love with Alexander, but maybe...just maybe, there was something there with Trevor too.

Alexander-If there was a swoon button, I'd just click it a thousand times for Alexander and move on. But, since there is none, I will say that Alexander makes my heartache. He's the perfect boyfriend. In here, you see not only his constant romantic side but his protective and superior side. I loved that side of him and hope to see more!

Cover: Love the cover! I do wish that we had a cover for Alexander or Jagger or another character. Don't get me wrong, I love the covers with Raven, but I think I can speak for a lot of VK fans when I say we want to see a little more Alexander. Maybe we will on the next installment!

Overall Rating: I have to give this book a three out of four. I wish it was longer and something big happened. In a way, it did, but nothing that blew my mind. I'm hoping something extrodinary happens in the next book. However, I will stand by the series and say that anyone who loves vampires or romance, read this series. Plus, if you read The Coffin Club, you'll be happy to hear that a very sexy and well-missed character will reappearing in this book!

Peace and Fangs,
Alisha

I really give the book 3.5 rating. I swear the author used the word nefarious 50 times in the book. Did the editor not catch this? Did no one own a thesaurus? The plot was more of the same and was a bit boring.

I really loved this books, however, when I started them they were on the childish side. I was really hoping that as the stories progressed (as with Raven's age) they would become less so. Sadly with this one she hasn't seemed to grow up any. She's 17 now, I want her to act more like one and have to deal with more age appropriate issues.
The club was a good plot, but Raven's Yes, No, Yes, No, Maybe, Okay... attitude about it really got on my nerves.
I really need to see the characters grow up more, the writing to become less simple and more like what one would expect from a YA book for me to want to continue with the story.

This book is one of my favorites in the series! Loved it. But I think Schreiber should do more Trevor and Raven moments. I love the idea of them together. Though that's quite impossible, considering Cryptic Cravenness is the second last of the books. But then again, Schreiber made me love this series even more with this book.

I love this series so much. Raven's character is so bold and curious. I am glad that her small town has a new club but the Maxwell's twins get me frustrated. Alexander and Raven still have a very sweet relationship even though trevor is always bothering Raven. What shock me the most was trevor actions. I can wait to read the next book.

This book was awful. This series is all around the worst. Jameson is the only reason I’ve continued to read this series because he is an excellent character. We didn’t hear a lot from him in this book which is a travesty but Raven did smack her face on the ground early on which is a positive.

Raven's decisions can be so reckless, right? It's like she's on a mission to make bad choices! And then she has the nerve to regret it afterward, only to jump right into more trouble. She's a total wreck! And seriously, where the heck was Luna during all of this chaos?

I didn't realize until the end that I skipped a book in this series lol everything is basically inconsequential. I figured I missed a scene where his old friend Sebastian rocks in and something happened with the best friend? I listen to these while driving so it's possible I'm not absorbing everything. Anyway, it didn't matter. Everyone loves one another and no one boinks, the end.

I just have to say that i agree with a lot of people, this series is lacking. Its funny and cute but it can be annoying at times. I just feel like this series is a little bit childish and should be aimed at 10 to 13 year old girls.

Even Twilight is better with word choices and the amount of action that goes on in the whole series. Sometimes I felt like I was reading the PG rated version of Twilight. At least Bella wasn't dating Edward just for the simple fact that he was a vampire, unlike Raven, who says she "loves" Alex and would love him even if he wasn't one. Bullshit. Don't get me wrong and all, I do believe that she might love him like she says she does but there's Trevor, her childhood nemesis, and which despite everything that's gone down between the both of them, there's no denying the sexual tension that exist in their messed up relationship.

I feel like punching Raven in the face whenever she gets jealous of Trevor being kissed by other chicks. Bitch if you like him so much, dump Alexander and get laid already! If I were Raven, i'd go for Trevor. Why? Just for the simple fact that Raven is annoying and doesn't know what she actually wants in life. I feel like she only wants Alexander because he's a vampire and she's always wanted to be one.

It leaves me wondering if she would have gone out with him even if he hadn't been a vampire. Why am I left asking myself those kinds of questions? There's a part in the book where Raven is thinking about why she feels jealous of Luna, because she was bitten by Sebastian and Alexander hasn't done that to her. And then in cryptic cravings she's all like, " that's the reason I like you guys, because you dress the way you do and are like me." Babe, you aren't like them and will never be even if you do turn. Your just an overly obsessive girl who's reckless and who can't think it through about what becoming a vamp would require her to do, one, having to lie to your parents and no choice but to move away from them and your best friend. Second, you wouldn't be able to walk out into the sunlight anymore. Third, no reflection! As much as vampires are cool and all, I rather be an ass-kickingSHADOWHUNTER!!!

And like someone in another review wrote,"Schreiber leaves to many problems unresolved and can't seem to make loose ends meet." That's the whole problem with this series, it's lacking, not enough action, unresolved problems, and having no point what-so-ever in the story. It just seems like a total disgrace and an insult to teen girls who love reading about gothic love stories. Like Ellen is mocking vampire stories and just making her story a cheesy parody of something that could have been more if more efforts had been made to make this story one of a kind. Even though I've just completely bitched about this series, I'm still gonna read the last book. I want to see this series through.

It has been a year since I read the last book in the series, and I was thinking "How am I going to remember who everyone is and what happened?" since I'm not that attached to this series. But as soon as this book started, it all came back to me. This pretty much picks up where Love Bites left off.

Jagger, Luna, Sebastian, Onyx and Scarlett were supposed to have left town after Sebastian bit Luna in front of all of Dullsville teenagers. But they're still in town, and hiding from Alexander. Why? Jagger has big plans for Dullsville. He wants to open a club, like the Coffin Club, for humans AND vampires. The human club "The Crypt" and the vampire underground club "The Covenant".

While they're planning to remodel the old mill in town, Alexander and Raven find out about their plans, and even though Raven can't believe her luck about having a club where she can go dance, she doesn't want "neferious" vampires to come to Dullsville.

At the same time Raven is dealing with her feelings on how she would deal if she finally became a vampire to be with Alexander for eternity, Alexander gets his first taste of Raven's blood (and no, it's YA, so it's nothing kinky), Onyx is apparently in love with Jagger, Scarlett wants Trevor, and Luna is still hanging on Sebastian's arm. I can't stand her.

But, what I liked the best about this book might be something nobody else wants to see... don't know. I want some Trevor/Raven action!!! I mean, seriously, she is just now realizing that he kid has a crush on her? And she can't admit to herself that she likes him too?? Why else would they be constantly going after each other? So, Trevor makes just a few small moves, like a nice birthday gift for her, and then the only thing he wants in return for helping promote the club is one dance with Raven at opening night!

As usual this is a fluffy read, plenty of goth teen angst, but entertaining. Sometimes you're in the mood for that, and I was!!!

I am getting close to the end of the series and only one book is left to read and I really want to tell you I am gonna miss Raven , Alexander...!!

In this book Raven and Alexander take their relationship a little forward with help of blood!! Thank god!! raven cut herself or else it wouldn't have happened and I really liked Alex drinking Raven''s blood. It was hot and sweet.

This book has recurring characters like Jagger Luna Sebastian. They all want to set up a coffin club in the small town and how Alexander and
Raven tackle this problem, negotiating with Jagger ..Raven dealt with Luna and her remarks...I feel angry and pity for her...and her relationship with Sebastian.

Raven was strong , intelligent and I really loved her good heart she was selfless and selfish ant right times. I really felt sad that Alexander didn't want to turn her even I know Alexander's concern/

Introduction of Phoenix was awesome...Even if we know who was he but still his personality is no different than Alexander...I quite came to love him too!!

There are more stuffs, more depth to this book..

Today's review is on Vampire Kisses 8: Cryptic Cravings by: Ellen Schreiber

Schreiber's latest book in the Vampire Kisses series doesn't live up to the previous ones. The story seems to crawl along at this point. Raven is still waiting for Alexander to turn her into a vampire after a year of being together.

Trevor is still a thorn in Raven's side, but surprises her by giving her a real birthday gift. One that someone who cared about her would buy. This set's off questions in Raven's mind as to his feelings for her and her's for him. Are the young readers that clueless? It has been apparent in books 1-7 that he has it bad for her. Let's focus on that dynamic.

Really, does it matter that Jagger's sister is trying desperately to have a boy tied to her that badly? I think not. Reader's want Alexander, Raven's and Trevor's story. At least I think so. And at book number 8, we should already be deep into that.

Don't get me wrong, the book was fine. But that's just it...it was fine. Nothing above average.

I know that I'll read the series until it's done just because I can't be left hanging, but I'm not sure about other readers.

"Cryptic Cravings" at first was a very slow read, but as I got farther in the book the more interesting it got. The middle has the most action and is the most interesting. I recommend this book for young adult and adult women who love a good romance, and mystery. "Cryptic Cravings" focuses a little more on mystery than romance, but still has a little romance to keep it going for romance lovers.

"I didn’t think anything could have been dreamier than the first time we kissed or I slept in his coffin." - said the crazy lame Goth chick to her boring Goth vampire boyfriend. This is all I need to point out. I can't even believe I've been reading this crap for this long. One book I'd never pay money for. No... one SERIES I'd never pay money for.
