A doctor that behaves like a child but is super smart when it comes to illnesses and medicine in general, a sidekick that is kicked around and made fun of but is also smart in his own way, mysteries, vampires, poisons, angels… Takao Ameku is your typical Sherlock Holmes type of aloof but very smart character, this time a doctor who is also pretty childish, and ‘Little Bird’… I mean Takanishi is her Watson, a doctor put there to help her in her work.

The thing that makes this work is that there is a lot of humor, with some serious moments thrown into the mix, with charismatic characters and pretty silly cases (even if it gets darker, sadder in the last story). It is lots of fun to be with the two main characters and seeing them, well, Takao Sensei, finding the answer. I know this is not the first volume in the series, but if all of them as much fun as this…

The best: silly mysteries

The worst: how many times can you scowl or touch your nose in a story? A drinking game here…

Alternatives: there are a lot of books like this, like the "ビブリア古書堂の事件手帖" series, that one centered on a secondhand bookstore
