This is more a comment on the whole series. I read His Favorite early in my Yaoi reading and it quickly became one of MY favorites. It’s witty and sweet and yes, a bit cruel, but well worth reading.
Yoshida has no chance with any of the girls in class. He’s short and they say mean things to him, but the new school “Prince” Sato gloms onto him and they start a relationship. Later, we discover that years earlier, Sato had been fat and Yoshida who had been looked up to at the time, intervened when people were picking on Sato.
I despite the fact that Sato’s attention turns his life upside down, Yoshida comes to have feelings for him. Noe of the things I really like is that Sato comes right out and tells the girls that he’s dating Yoshida.
Well worth a read and re-read!

There is just something so endearing about Tanaka's pairing of 'troll' Yoshida and hot guy Sato, even after 9 volumes. Yes, the story does go off on silly tangents now and then when the focus really should always stay on our two leads. But the tale is just so unusual and the two guys too much fun that I always look forward to every new Viz release of His Favorite.

Story: Someone is kidnapping all the chocolatiers in Tokyo. What will Yoshida do when all he wants is to make something special for Sato for Valentine's Day - and mistakenly becomes embroiled in the kidnappings? Meanwhile, a new students stirs up some trouble when he mistakenly assumes Sato is going out with Yoshida to throw off all the girls. Will Yoshida be too embarrassed to confess the truth?

The treat for readers is the last chapter - when the tone changes a bit to finally give a bit more romance to the silliness. The ending is perfect and a payoff for the wait through so much of the series to see Yoshida and Sato in a private romantic moment.

In all, I love this series. It's sweet, funny, and silly - and very different. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Awkward Yoshida is hated by all the girls in school for his perceived closeness with hot guy Sato, who uses hanging out with Yoshida as an excuse to turn them all down. If Yoshida is merely an excuse, why does Sato taunt him in private about “his favorite”? Is it possible Sato’s feelings run deeper than friendship? And what could he possibly see in the funny-looking Yoshida? Watch Yoshida’s life turn upside down with hilarious results!

According to wiktionary, this is on-point for yaoi: from Japanese やおい (yaoi), an acronym of Yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi (ヤマなし、オチなし、意味なし), "no climax, no point, no meaning".

I got sucked in and spent way too much time and money on this series of boys-love scenarios. Because that’s all it really is, a series of tropes strung together with a mean pretty boy and an “ugly” tough guy who is really short.

This series contains: badly proportioned hands and bodies (though I've seen much worse), mean girls, asshole love interest, non-consensual or dubiously-consensual sexual interactions, and a total disregard to boundaries or desires.

While it has its moments, there's already enough explosive boys-love stories out there. We didn't really need another. Me saying “it's not as bad as others" isn't saying much. I know it's good that things are getting better but they're still not good enough, and I can’t really believe I read nine volumes of this before I gave up.

More characters to love...

As always I love reading about Sato and Yoshida each story takes their relationship to a new level of trails, difficulties and tests that draw the couple closer together and helps them to each be stronger. With the help of close friends old and new which I hope we get to learn more about. You watch them overcome self doubt, jealousy and trickery from the girl's to be closer. Truly one of my favorites to read!

Mixed feelings. On one hand, Yoshida and Satou are so sweet!!!! Love them! On the other, I appreciate the side relationships and characters but I didn’t like the ones explored in this (ahem, the first years).

sato and yoshida are kinda (!!!!) cute now…..esp the conversation in the beginning (tho the end was bittersweet :,))) they’ve really grown on me, these two crackhead fools <3

Toujours aussi marrant et parfois tordu. Je pensais qu'une fois la relation Sato/Yoshida révélée la situation évoluerait, mais finalement pas tellement, avec en plus Sato qui n'hésite plus à provoquer Yoshida par ses gestes d'affections, devant les autres.
Cela laisse les situations dans lesquelles Yoshida est mal à l'aise, perdurer, ce qui reste marrant.

Nuestra primera pelea de pareja... Más bien fue un malentendido, pero también fue interesante ver cómo ambos lo resolvieron.

El último capítulo fue sorprendente, el explorar las emociones de Sato también fue refrescante para la historia.

Mi personajes favorito sigue siendo Yoshida.

Sooooo good!

I wish these were longer - I fly through them so fast! They're so good, I read this entire volume in secret at work, giggling like an idiot the entire time.
At the end it said there MIGHT be a next volume!?

Still silly and cute in a million ways. A little confused, because this covers Valentine's day, which we saw in Vol. 6. Is this a year later, already? Or just backtracking? I can't tell.
