Twenty-year-old Rhian Harvender always wanted an adventure, until one finally arrives. Following his father's brutal murder for unwittingly harboring an assassin, Rhian is forced to flee from his home. He enlists the help of his friend Hecter, a young but proud lord, and along the way befriends, a Nightbane named Fox.
As they venture across the realm of Teras, Rhian learns of a spreading war ignited by the shadowfolk, and encounters a mighty yet dangerous magical beast—a behemoth. In fact, danger seems to lurk around every corner, but he knows he will be able to begin anew if he can only make it to the great city of Haven... or so he thinks.
A farm boy dreams of adventure, and gets some, when guardsmen show up at his home looking for a hapless assassin. Helped by his friend, who is a Lord, he goes on a quest, and finds adventure isn't all it's cracked up to be.
An enjoyable, fast-paced read with characters neither too naive or too good, and, at least in this installment, no earth-shattering horribly evil overpowered world conquerors that are defeated by a farm boy. This book sets up a promising series, and, if you like traditional fantasy, I would recommend it. The ending is more of a stopping point, wrapping up this section, and it definitely sets up the next adventures for our heroes.
