This little gem represents some of the early research findings about the psychotherapeutic efficacy of LSD before the US government forbade all research on the chemical. Interestingly, of course, the ban on such research did not apply to the CIA or the Department of Defense, both of which continued such work under, even more interestingly, Dr. Harold Alexander Abramson and others--Abramson having begun his work for the CIA's MK-ULTRA mind-control program in 1953 and being the attending physician in the suicide of Army scientist Frank Olsen.
The head of the Macy Foundation, a founder of the World Federation for Mental Health and of the Cybernetics Group, Frank Fremont-Smith, convener of this conference, was likely turned on to the drug and its (overt therapeutic and covert coercive) potentials by Abramson.
Abramson organized a series of six conferences on LSD and related psychotropics beginning in 1959. In 1967 he published his The Use of LSD in Psychotherapy and Alcoholism, the drug having proved highly efficacious in the treatment of addiction.
