Katie leaves the city and goes with her family to an annual autumn powwow, where "Katie" fades and "Red Bird" comes to life as she along with hundreds of other Native Americans join together in collective celebration of their culture and proud heritage.
This has some of the most colorful and vibrant illustrations that I have seen. I really enjoyed reading this book for the connections it has with Native Americans and the powwows. I highly recommend this book.
My view on Social Studies: I believe that social studies is the study of humans, their interactions with each other and the world around them. As teachers, we must open the eyes of our students to the diverse cultures around us. Every individual is unique and can offer something to the world. Summary and integration of book: This story depicts the life of a girl who is a part of the Nanticoke. Although they live in modern times, they still celebrate unique events to their culture together. We get to see a small glimpse into what life is like for people that associate with the Nanticoke. Often times it can be hard to find stories about what life is like for modern day Native Americans. This story is great in opening our eyes to a different culture.
This book follows Katie as she and her family go to the Naticoke powwow. A great story aboutl modern American Indian families and the rituals and traditions associated with a powwow.
