An adaptation of the traditional tale of a mermaid who falls in love with a human, featuring Strawberry Shortcake and her friends as the various characters.
I've counted books among my friends for as long as I can remember. I was born in Santa Monica, California, though that beautiful city is just one of many places I've called home; my family moved ten times before I graduated from high school. Moving so frequently gave me many opportunities to experience new places, meet new people, and make new friends . . . but it could be lonely, too, especially while I adjusted to a new town or school. When I felt homesick for people and places far away, I knew that I could always turn to my books, familiar friends who traveled everywhere I did. Reading so much inspired me to write my own stories and poems, on topics ranging from birds and snowflakes to castles and talking pasta (really!).
Looking back, all that reading and writing was the perfect preparation for my dream job: writing for children and young adults. I moved to New York City for college and after graduating from New York University with a degree in Dramatic Literature, I worked as a children's book editor for five years. Another move—this time with my husband—led me to close my eyes, hold my breath, and take the leap to become a full-time writer. It was the best decision I ever could've made.
I've lived in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for five years (that's almost a record for me) with my family, and I thank my lucky stars every day for the good fortune to write for kids and teens.
When I'm not writing, I'm . . . Knitting obsessively, just like my grandmother did (if there's a knitting gene, I got it from her) Drinking another pot of tea Doodling on a 3 x 5 index card Attempting to decipher the cryptic Post-It notes stuck to my desk Reading voraciously, especially nonfiction or current events Cooking vegetarian food (or, more likely, making dessert) Trying to save my garden from a fearless band of marauding squirrels Cuddling with my cat and wrestling with my dog Covering my kids with kisses (copied from the author's website)
Deep beneath the sea, lived the little mermaid puppy named Pearl Violet frolicked below the ocean 🌊. She loved to explore the sunken ship and look for lost objects. She called her friend, Flounder, a yellow fish. "Come on, Flounder! I'm sure this old boat has lots of human treasure aboard." "I'm not g-g-going in there! It's spooky!" "Don't be such a guppy. Follow me." When Ariel swam inside the ship's cabin, she discovered a fork. "Oh, my gosh! Have you ever seen anything so wonderful?!" Ariel swam to the water's surface and found her seagull friend named Scuttle. "Scuttle, do you know what this is?" She handed him a fork. "Judging for my expert knowledge of humans, it's obviously a... a... dinglehopper! Humans use these to straightened their hair." "Thanks Scuttle. It's perfect for my collection." And with that, PearlBerry dove excitedly back underwater. Soon, PearlBerry arrived an undersea grotto where she kept her treasures from the human world. She hid her collection there because her father King Apple forbade merpeople to have any contact with humans. That night, PearlBerry saw strange lights shimmering over the ocean 🌊. She and Flounder swam off to investigate. At the surface, they found Scuttle flying over a large sailing ship. "Some celebration, huh sweetie? It's the birthday of a human they called Prince Eric." Forgetting her father's rule, Ariel peered in amazement at the young man on the deck. "I've never seen a human this close before. He's very handsome, isn't he?" She watched as Eric's advisor Sir Grimsby presented the prince with a birthday gift. Meanwhile, far beneath the ocean 🌊, the wicked sea witch named Ursula used her magic to spy on Ariel. Ursula was bitter because King Triton had banished her from his kingdom for her evildoing. "My, my... the daughter of the great sea king Triton in love with a human. This headstrong 🙆💪 lovesick 💖🤒 maybe the key to my revenge on Triton." On the surface, a terrible storm raged across the ocean 🌊. The prince took charge. "Stand fast! Secure the rigging!" Without warning, a huge bolt of lightning struck the mast. PearlBerry watched in horror as Green Apple fell into the water. "Green Apple's been knocked into the water! I've got to save him!" With the storm swirling around her, Ariel desperately searched for Eric. "Where is he? If I don't find him soon...!? Wait, there he is!" She took hold of Green Apple, and using all her strength, managed to pull him to the surface. As the storm calmed down, PearlBerry drag the unconscious prince to shore. "He's still breathing. He must be alive." Just then, a crab named Plumbastian scuttled across the sand. She was the sea king's music director and advisor. "PearlBerry, get away from that human! Your father forbids contact with them, remember!?" But PearlBerry wasn't listening, and sang about longing to be with Prince Green Apple forever. Back at the Coral Palace, King Apple noticed PearlBerry floating about as if in a dream. Summoning
