This was a horribly edited book, based upon lectures from Dr. Shriver’s famed class on the History of Miami. (Which, at this point, I would probably pass with an A.) The editor did a terrible job in condensing the material; I would find myself reading the same information three times in a row, only slightly different. Sometimes it would read like a summary of the longer information presented in the previous chapter, but occasionally it would be backwards. While I believe a summary would be good, it got a bit ridiculous.
Like all of the Miami history books, this was also full of snide little sexist remarks which drove me crazy. There were a few times when the sexism of the founding fathers of Miami was highlighted, but that’s about the limit of information about the early Miami women. It did give me some openings to do my own research, and only proves that that research desperately needs to be done.
