In this screwball comedy, Haruhi, a poor girl at a rich kids' school, is forced to repay an $80,000 debt by working for the school's swankiest, all-male club--as a boy! Then she discovers just how wealthy the six members are an how different the rich are from everybody else.
Hikaru has asked Haruhi to go out with him, but he doesn't want her answer right away. Yet at the same time, he's trying to get Tamaki to realize he's in love with Haruhi too. Is the Host Club prepared for a love triangle among its members?

My interest always seems to dip around this vol mark, I still love the series but idk…it’s so slow going for me!! Anyway I’m tryna finish my re read before 2022 so we keep moving!
Tamaki is super concerned when he hears that Hikaru was hurt on the school ski trip and rushes to check on him. Then he becomes super confused trying to figure out the "trauma" Hikaru is telling him to get over.
The twins throw a New Year's Party and Haruhi breaks the bad news to Hikaru.
The crew heads to the temple to celebrate the New Year. The have a contest to see who can buy Haruhi the best gift. Tamaki is sure he knows her best and gets her a giant tuna ring. (This was one of the funniest things ever. I loved it so much!) Then horror of horrors, Haruhi is kidnapped!
Of course they all go rushing to save Haruhi. (I love this!) Afterwards, Tamaki finally realizes what his "trauma" is - he's worried about losing his family. (friends) Hikaru informs him that bonds don't break that easily. Everyone is having a lot of revelations about how they feel.
This was such a good volume. Hikaru is very considerate of the people around him. Though he wants to be with Haruhi, he doesn't want to pursue her in a way that would be unfair to her or Tamaki. He knows Tamaki has feelings for her, even if he hasn't come to terms with them yet. Now he's worried she may have feelings for him too. But he's not giving up so easily. I'm glad that he's doing something for himself, but I'm also glad that he's helping Tamaki grow up a little. Tamaki has been clinging to his vision of the Host Club as a family for too long. He needs to have that kind of bond because of his own broken home. He doesn't realize that it doesn't matter whether they're family or friends, they have a bond and it's not going to break easily. Now it's time for him to think about what that really means, and how he truly feels about Haruhi. I think Megumi's arrival really shows that to him.
This volume really kept to that theme throughout, which is unique. Usually, there's one or two chapters that are humorous filler. There are some other interesting things in the works though. I'm curious about the Suoh's lawyer. Kyoya has a good eye. I love the cunning personality of his character. This series is just getting better and better. I have the next volume on reserve at the library so it will be up soon.
Omg, I love this series so much. It's so ridiculous. But, that's part of what you gotta love about it. I'm also loving Haruhi's character growth. It's good for her.
How I choose my rating: 1* Didn't like it at all. These are rare as I usually just don't finish any book I dislike this much. 2** Didn't like it. Again usually DNF if I dislike it this much, but occasionally I feel it still has potential and I try to stick with it to the end. 3*** I liked it. It wasn't great but it was enjoyable enough. It is unlikely I'll ever reread it but I might finish the series if it is a part of one. 4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this at some point, and I will almost always finish the series if part of one. 5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will probably reread this and possibly more than once. I will definitely finish the series if it's part of one.
Interesting volume but I'm also looking forward to some more light hearted episodes haha! I also really would like Tamaki to realise his feelings (and act a bit on them) and Haruhi to accept hers and for the whole Host Club to be just happy... But that probably won't fill another 4 volumes so it won't happen (yet) haha! I really hope all the characters will be happy (except Tamaki's grandmother... She can fall face first in a pile of horse dung!). On to the next volume (can't believe I only have 4 left!!!)!
"Rather than feeling depressed over not being aware of something, what matters more is how you react once you've discovered it...Believe in yourself and act the way you want to with confidence."
This opens after Hikaru's confession. Overall, one of the more dramatic volumes with another random guest I didn't super care for. However, the character work for Tamaki and Haruhi + the cute end story about Mori made me round this up to 4 stars.
Hikaru and Kaoru are on the cover, so you know it’s going to be a good volume.
I’m super thankful that Haruhi didn’t prolong the tension and told Hikaru her feelings up front. His feelings are still there, but he at least knows how Haruhi feels about him now and can do with that what he wants.
The kidnapping and giant tuna ring storyline are exactly the wacky, fun content I’ve come to expect and love from these Ouran volumes. I thought it was funny and laughed quite a bit to myself while reading that arc.
I thought the addition of a new female character who looks very similar to Haruhi was great. It raised the question for me whether Tamaki loves Haruhi or if he loves the idea of her. I think we got the answer as the storyline progressed.
The extra Mori episode with his animal friends at the end was hilarious and I love him.
I’m sad that this series is coming to an end! I only have 4 volumes left to read. How will everything end up?!
After the last volume it was hard to start reading this one. And then this book was the best one in awhile. Because it was funny? Because it wasn't about Tamaki being dumb? I finished this one and was like, I want to read the next one right now. The use of quick flashbacks might be part of it, I like a good backstory. And the cast is just used without being explained. And the art is still good. 3.5 of 5.
Re-read: September 2020 This volume was a roller coaster of emotions. Every single scene was hilarious, but there were also some really emotional moments! We've gotten to the part of the story where I've forgotten a bunch of stuff, so I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Re-read: July 2018 Aghhh I love these books so much! They always put a smile on my face. I'm smiling right now, while writing this review, because just thinking about them makes me happy. Here's what I loved in this volume:
- Even though that scene was sad, it was also super funny! That's what I love about this series. It can be serious and heartfelt, but the drama is always undercut with humor. I can see why some people wouldn't like that, but I loved it. - Mei continues to be amazing. She's so brutally honest with Haruhi! Everyone needs a friend like her. Or Kyoya for that matter. He's as honest with Tamaki as Mei is with Haruhi. I also love Mei's friendship with the twins. I'm not surprised that she gravitated to them the most. - Although he has made many mistakes, it's obvious that Yuzuru loves his son, Tamaki. It's adorable how much he dotes over him. - It's obvious that the club members love each other, but they can be so harsh, even if it's unintentional like in the scene where they're guessing what Tamaki is thinking when he was left during the ski trip.
After Hikaru dropped the bombshell of confessing his love and asking Haruhi to be his girlfriend, my heart was pounding, but I should've expected that we wouldn't get to see Haruhi and Hikaru as a couple. I should have known that Hikaru was going to ask Haruhi to think about his confession and wait to hear her response. That's like Shojo Writing 101! After his confession, Hikaru starts avoiding Haruhi at all costs because in his heart he already knows that she'll reject him. Before he can fully process what he did, Tamaki appears after hearing the news of Hikaru rescuing the Class President from the top of a mountain. Before Tamaki can fuss over him any further, Hikaru tells Tamaki that he confessed to Haruhi and tells Tamaki to try his best to get over whatever trauma he's working through, so he realizes his love for Haruhi as well and they can play on fair footing. Tamaki spends the rest of the night thinking about what Hikaru said and trying to figure out what he meant by trauma. The next time we see them, Hikaru and Kaoru have thrown a New Years party all for Haruhi, though it's technically a work event since they also invited the Host Club's patrons. At the party, Haruhi asks Mei for advice on what to say to Hikaru, but instead of advice, Mei just berates her on her lack of delicacy before Kaoru whisks her away to give an answer to Hikaru. On the terrace, Hikaru waits for Haruhi and without dancing around the subject, Haruhi straight up rejects him. She tells him that he's a dear friend to her and she's grateful to him and without skipping a beat, he asks her if she's in love with Tamaki, which she expertly deflects (haha). When they go back to the party, Hikaru steals Tamaki away and tells him that even though Haruhi rejected him, it doesn't mean he's going to give up on her. He apologizes for telling him to back off and says that even though they aren't a real family, their bonds won't break over something like this. He ends his confrontation by telling Tamaki to face his true feelings. The next chapter opens with a flashback of Tamaki as a child sulking because of his mother's condition when his father finally returns. He asks why they all can't live together like a normal family. His father responds by telling his that even though they're apart, their family bonds will remain strong. After some hearty exposition about how powerful the Suoh family is, Tamaki gets ready for yet another New Years celebration with the Host Club and Mei. Tamaki is still very awkward around everyone after all that's happened with Hikaru. Hikaru is intent on Tamaki learning of his true feelings, so he provokes Tamaki into playing a game of getting a present that Haruhi will like the most. The entire club ends up getting sucked into their game and Haruhi is left all alone at the Temple. The Twins take Mei to ask for advice as to what she'd like best. She gives Hikaru some blunt advice and he vows to be magnanimous and wait until Tamaki to discover his feelings for him to start the fight for Haruhi's love. Meanwhile, Tamaki bumps into Haruhi just after he found his present for her, while Kosaka, the Suoh Family Lawyer, watches them from afar. Haruhi and Tamaki find a quiet place to sit and have a talk about Hikaru's confession and Haruhi's new life philosophy. Tamaki says that when he said that he didn't intend for her to take it as her lacking, he just wanted her to be closer to her dream. Tamaki is very down-to-earth in this scene. I really love seeing this mature side of him and it shows just how much he cares for Haruhi, even if he doesn't realize to what extent. He tells her to believe in herself and gives her the gift that he thinks would suit her perfectly: a Giant Tuna ring. Haruhi bursts out laughing, saying that it made all of her worries disappear and they share a tender moment that immediately sends both Tamaki and Haruhi into a spiral. She ends up running off while claiming that she never thought of Tamaki as a father. Haruhi sees Kosaka and as she approaches her, a mysterious figure kidnaps Haruhi! Tamaki looks for her, but only finds the Giant Tuna ring he gave her laying on the ground. Tamaki immediately runs to find Mei and the rest of the Hosts to tell them the news, but he doesn't exactly have the best evidence. Thankfully, Kosaka saw the kidnapping a confirms Tamaki's suspicions and immediately jumps into action. Kyoya is suspicious of Kosaka's presence, but his suspicions have to wait until Haruhi is rescued. Since they share a phone plan, Hikaru is able to track Haruhi's phone, so him and Tamaki split a cab with Hunny and Mori as they follow the kidnappers. Meanwhile, Haruhi is peacefully resting on an unreasonably comfortable futon. When she awakens, she hears her kidnappers talking about their motives. They were planning on kidnapping Tamaki, but were too intimidated when seeing him in person, so they just picked up Haruhi since they assumed she was another rich kid. Apparently, these men used to be contracted by the Suoh Corporation, but were recently cut which means they'll have to close shop. Haruhi hears all of this, which the kidnappers realize, so they break her phone and tie her to a chair. After losing Haruhi's signal, Kyoya is able to deduce Haruhi's location based on the assumption that the kidnappers have a connection to the Suoh Family. Haruhi tries to reason with the kidnappers and realize that they're not some evil villains, they're just real people that are down on their luck. Hunny bursts through the window, but before he can beat up the kidnappers, Haruhi tells them that they didn't do anything to her and that they're actually quite nice. After getting free, Tamaki embraces Haruhi and he tells the kidnappers that the next time they have a problem, they should talk to him directly and Kosaka offers to help them get back on their feet without the Suoh Family. After the dust settles, Haruhi realizes that she's lost the ring Tamaki gave her. It's at this moment that it seems like Tamaki has finally realized how he feels for Haruhi. Later on, we see a very suspicious phone call between Kosaka and an unknown person. After the kidnapping, Tamaki seems even more depressed than ever, but after saving a new student from a horse, Tamaki becomes acquainted with the girl he saved, Kanoya. She has a similar backstory to Tamaki and moved to Japan after her parents coming divorce and is forbidden from ever seeing her father again due to her mother's side of the family. The Hosts worry that Kanoya will take Haruhi's place in his heart and are desperately trying to stop them from growing closer. It doesn't help that Kanoya looks very similar to Haruhi is will do practically anything Tamaki says. And after seeing just how different he is from Haruhi he is, Kanoya confesses her love for Tamaki, but thankfully, he doesn't reciprocate her feelings. After hearing about her troubles, the Hosts realize that they need to show Kanoya her true feelings, just like they're trying to do with Tamaki. We get to learn more about Tamaki's backstory as he realizes that he finally has what he's always wanted in the Host Club. We end this volume with everyone in the Host Club scheming something without Tamaki, which we'll see in the next volume. We get a little extra that gives us a peek into Mori's life outside the Host Club, too. This volume totally had my heart pounding! I was so worried that they'd make Kanoya into an antagonist of sorts and have her and Haruhi fighting over Tamaki. I guess we'll have to wait until the next volume to find out!
While this novel was high yet again on both plot development and emotional realizations, the introduction of a "bs love-rival" character in the last chapter downgrades it one star. I've never liked the love rival subplot in any context, especially when it's clear that the main characters won't take them seriously. It's a lifeless, cliche, and overdone plot device that just doesn't need to exist. Also, on the general Ouran plot line, it's a downer on things that didn't need to happen.
But, that's just one girl's humble opinion and justification of her rating. The series overall is five stars, no doubt about it; but one chapter is sometimes enough to lose out on one of the stars from an otherwise perfect rating.
Mori's silent short at the end is the best part of this volume, but it's a solid entry all around. I especially like how maturely the romantic conflicts are treated. There's a love triangle, sure, but it's done without vilifying any of the characters, or setting any of them at odds over it. Who would have thought that a silly series like this could handle a love triangle so well?
Well that escalated quickly. I pretty much called the outcome for the whole Haruhi/Hikaru moment (along with probably most other readers). I will say I was not expecting the kidnapping and I love the other members' of the host club perfectly logical reaction to Tamaki when he described his theories as to why.
Well... the kidnapping storyline was a bit annoying. It always happens in these types of mangas. It's so over done and the fact that it was super random and really only served one (stupid, in my opinion) purpose, I was a bit over it.
The rest of the volume was okay though. Mori is a stud!
