Ian Lendler is, first and foremost, a person. After that, the details get a bit sketchy. We’re pretty sure he has two arms and two legs. There are rumors of a third thumb, which you may laugh about now but let’s see what you think 1,000 years from now when evolution decides that three thumbs is way better because you can use can-openers more efficiently and hitchhike with aplomb and everyone will laugh about the old days when everyone was a “two-thumber.”

But I digress.

I am a writer. I grew up in Connecticut and NYC, but now I live near San Francisco, CA. My books are below. I sincerely hope you enjoy them. Thank you for visiting.

A young boy narrates this humorous chronicle of his favorite day of the week: Saturday! Saturday is a stay-at-home day, and the boy enjoys the activities he and his parents and younger brother engage in on that day. From waking his parents up early to reading endless books, Saturday is full of fun...

An engaging and humorous story is paired with quirky upbeat illustrations in Ian Lendler and Serge Bloch's Saturday, which offers a celebration of one family's together time. Although not really my cup of tea, artistically speaking, I did find Bloch's illustrations amusing, and liked the occasional disconnect between image and word here. When the young narrator assures us that he and his father like a lot of books, and his father is depicted looking a bit dazed - no doubt weary of being asked to read so many volumes - it forms an amusing contradiction. Recommended to anyone looking for new pictures books featuring home and family life, as narrated by a young child.

Will you read "Saturday" as fiction or as a how-to book?

As I see it, that's my big choice to make in reviewing and rating this book.

Another choice is to review this book as written for children or for adults. (I'll play around with that concept in COMMENTS below.)

"SATURDAY" AS FICTION

No doubt, that's what most readers expect this to be.

In this context, humor is all part of the fun and games. Such as:

One of my chores is watering my parents' garden...
... and sometimes my parents too.

Because I assume this is what most readers think of when reading a book like this, with its playful illustrations, I'll rate this book on that basis. Giving it FIVE Stars.

But what about the second way to interpret this picture book...

"SATURDAY" AS A HOW TO

Meaning, how to act like a spoiled child, get away with whatever you like, and have a ton of fun in the process.

Hello, children learn from everything, and they learn things long before they understand niceties like, "Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink."

For instance, check out the illustration that accompanies, "We like a lot of books." The father looks overwhelmed or tired. While his self-absorbed child looks immensely pleased with himself.

For another example, the narrator explains that on Saturdays, "it's my job to start them early." That is, to wake up his parents, whether they like it or not.

Personally I would rate this version of the book with ONE STAR and warn parents against reading it. In reality, I'm a loving parent, and a sucker for just about any child I see, stopping to grin and make foolish conversation. However, I am so not-a-fan of spoiled children... or the parents who raise them to live that way.

The young narrator of this delightful picture book enthusiastically extols the greatness of Saturdays. He describes the many glorious things he can do with his family on Saturday: family meals (breakfast, lunch AND dinner), reading books with dad, imaginative exploits, maybe a birthday party to attend. Even Saturday chores can be turned into adventures as he sprays his unwitting parents when he waters the plants and then patches up Dad after Dad does a little DIY around the house. But best of all, even though Saturday comes to an end, he is not unhappy because “tomorrow is Sunday and we can do it all over again!” Each of the boy’s Saturday activities is paired with illustrations revealing his parents’ true feelings as they try to keep up with his revelry. The droll pencil-and-digital drawings capture the sardonic tone of the story and will keep both youngsters and adults giggling. The premise will be familiar to any parents who have been wakened at the crack of dawn on Saturday by their offspring.

I liked this book because of the fun illustrations. I also love that it is narrated from the kid's perspective. this would be paired with other books about family or days of the week. I would use this in center time. I would maybe read this aloud but I feel like there may be a better book to talk about the days of the week

What do you and your family do on the weekends? Where as this little boy's parents may dream of staying in bed late and enjoying some extra winks, he knows he'll need to get them up and going in order to accomplish all the things that Saturday can hold. Touching moments vie with exasperated ones to realistically demonstrate what a busy household can be like. Great illustrations convey the energy it takes to keep up with Saturdays. Great for a little ones bookshelf.

Created with pencil and digitally in Photoshop, the illustrations in this funny picture book show a youngster thrilled by the arrival of Saturday with all its promised delights. While his parents snooze blissfully, grateful to have a morning on which they don't need to wake up early to go to work, he awakens them, ready to fill the day with family fun. I had to laugh at the scenes in which the boy and his father settle down for some reading, but then the father must do most of the work and doesn't get to enjoy the books he had in mind to read. Clearly, this youngster is more than these two adults can handle. There are several amusing scenes, including the family cuddle on the couch, and the too much togetherness as everyone, including the dog Frazzle, prepares for a good night's sleep, all piled in the same bed. Lest any reader forget that there are, after all, two days to the weekend in which to rest, the narrator gleefully celebrates the arrival of Sunday in which "we can do it all over again!" Undoubtedly, this is one set of parents who will be grateful for the reprieve provided by the arrival of Monday, a workday. The facial expressions are priceless, showing some exhausted adults and an energetic child intent on wringing every experience possible from the day.

I was really excited to read Saturday to Christopher on Friday night. It is about the excitement of the weekend - time spent with parents when they're not working. And it's cute, but it's not as fun as I was hoping it would be. And Christopher didn't seem very into it either.

I don't know if he was just too old for this book or what. Maybe it's better for ages 2-4? It reminded me a little of the Little Critter series in the way that the boys imagines things to be different than what they are. And the ending is adorable.

Saturday has quickly become that book that my kids ask me to read every single night, over and over. They love watching the pained faces of the parents as the kids enjoy their routine Saturday shenanigans. This is our fourth book by Ian Lendler (we also have AN UNDONE FAIRY TALE, and both STRATFORD ZOO books) and he is easily one of their favorite authors. Truly funny kids books are a rarity, and Mr. Lendler never fails to deliver. Add in the clever and iconic art by Serge Bloch, and this book is a surefire hit. A perfect book to entertain both kids and parents--highly recommend!
