Cumberpatch Cove #1

Death and Doubloons

Rate this book
Rylee Spencer has never believed in anything paranormal. Not the reported hauntings of the less-than-notorious pirate Cumberpatch Cove is named after, and certainly not her grandmother’s predictions regarding the reincarnation of a great-great uncle on her father’s side of the family.

Everything changes when she is zapped by a not-so-awesome birthday present and ends up haunted by a recently deceased tour guide.

With her parents out of town, the family’s shop to run, and an eccentric relative to keep out of trouble, Rylee has her hands full. Add in a muffin-stealing mouse, the mystery of some stolen doubloons, and the town’s new detective who thinks she should be at the top of his suspect list, and things get a whole lot worse.

Audiobook. Book: 4; Narration (author): 3.

Ugh. Where do I start? This was an author giveaway and I'm always glad to be offered audiobooks as giveaways. The plot was cute and simple, it didn't aspire to be more than it was and it set the scene for what may be a fun cozy little paranormal murder mystery series.

The problem? The narration by the author. And this was banged into me every time she said Bane-ger, when she was talking about Bangor (notice the "or" at the end? It's there for a reason). And for some reason she felt obliged to use this word often. I finished the book yesterday and it still makes me twitchy.

If the authors are going to narrate their own work, they should know the correct pronunciation of the words they've written, and as with all audiobooks, my personal opinion is an experienced director should always be used; those are always the smoothest and most professional audiobooks I've listened to / read. End of rant.

Since this site is about book content, I am giving it a 4 star rating. But if you're from the Northeast, beware the audio.

Pirates, gold coins, ghosts, a cat who thinks he's a dog and a mystery I loved!

I loved the characters, mystery and fast pace of the book and didn't want it to end!

Rylee Spencer, the main character, develops the ability (not going to say how because you'll want to read it for yourself) to speak to and see ghosts. Working at the family owned store, Mysterious Baubles you might think she's a believer in the supernatural, but that's not the case. When an acquaintance is murdered, while helping prepare for a festival, Rylee is faced with using her new talent - the problem is she's not sure where to start. Rylee has to depend on her best friends, Jade and Shawna, her grandmother, Howard the mouse who may be a long lost relative and Barley, the victim's adorable cat who thinks he's a dog!

I liked Rylee because she was not at all sure this "talent" was something she wanted but she was going to try to help. The supporting characters were funny and quirky and the town was charming and just perfect! I love cozies with animals and Barley and Howard made for an odd and wonderful pairing. There was a possible love interest for Rylee, but I liked that the author gave the reader a chance to "meet" Rylee first. The mystery was absorbing and fun. I didn't guess "whodunit" and that made the book even better!

I can't wait for the next visit to Cumberpatch Cove and see who Rylee will be helping next!

A festival, a theft and 2 murders

What do they all have in common? A great story of ghosts, friendship and betrayal. A fun paranormal read with plenty of twists in the plot and some interesting characters.

Sort of a paranormal cozy mystery and a good start to a new series. Rylee is a skeptic in a family of believers. When her dad sends her a birthday present that gives her a paranormal gift, everything has to change. Funny with quirky characters and a pretty good mystery, I enjoyed it.

This was such a fun ghost mystery that I didn't want it to end! The characters were awesome from great-great uncle Howard the mouse that kept stealing Rylee's muffins to Grams, Rylee's sweet and spirit-savvy grandmother. I loved Rylee's best friends, Jade and Shawna. A trio always makes me think of Nancy Drew and how well it worked for that series. Being the only one in her family that didn't believe in the paranormal had Rylee as the odd one out in her circle of friends as well as her family, since her besties Jade and Shawna were open for it, along with half the town. Their town was named for a notorious pirate, and this year Jessica was to head up the treasure hunt for Founders' Day. Only Jessica became a ghost before that happened.

Rylee had promised her that she'd find her killer, and she was true to her word. With her friends' help and the police stepping in at the last minute, the showdown in the cemetery was a really good one. I loved the scene with her friends chucking rocks at the killer! Goodbye to Jessica was a little sad even as the reader, and I found myself hoping that Jessica could come back and help with mysteries in future books. I'm very anxious to read the next book when it comes out!

Rylee Spencer runs a store called in Mysterious Baubles located in a small Maine, coastal town, Cumberbatch Cove named after a famous pirate. She loves her grandmother but doesn’t buy into her beliefs that she can communicate with their dead relatives and they come back as animals. Currently it is a pesky mouse named Howard. In fact she doesn’t believe in the paranormal at all. Well that is about to change. She gets zapped at her birthday party and suddenly she sees dead people. Now what?

What a wonderful paranormal cozy mystery, filled with great characters and an excellent mystery. The characters were personable and seemed to pop off the page making you invested in the story. One thing I liked was that the characters were learning about what it means to see see ghosts at the same time the reader was. The mystery was good and filled with interesting twists and surprising turns that kept you glued until the end. The hint of a romance was a nice touch. The kooky characters and great small town atmosphere made this a wonderful cozy mystery.

Being the only one in her family that didn't believe in the paranormal had Rylee as the odd one out in her circle of friends as well as her family, She worked in the shop where the paranormal was revered . Famous Pirate has -per the leagon- had burried his treasure -golden doubloons- many years ago.
Rylee's best friends, Jade and Shawna were belivers of the leagon and all things paranormal. A trio that always makes it worked for that series. The quirks from great-great uncle Howard -the mouse- that kept stealing Rylee's muffins to Grams. Rylee's sweet, spirit-savvy grandmother. Rylee's -her two besties- Jade and Shawna were open for it, along with half the town. Their town was named for a notorious pirate, and this year Jessica was to head up the treasure hunt for Founders' Day. Only Jessica became a ghost before that happened, and to Rylee surprie she could suddenly see and hear Jessica's ghost, she promised to find the killer and find closure for Jessica's ghost.
I listened to the Audio version of this story. I really enjoyed this adventure, the narraitor of the story was very clear and made it enjoyable.

Beware of gifts

A wonderful read. A nice plot about a sceptic who receives a gift, gets the ability to see ghost and then gets embroiled in a murder of a friend. Loved the different characters from our slightly timid sceptic to her dippy BFF's. The animals personality also comes across well with some amusing exchanges between her and the mouse.
She's been left in charge of the store and her Gran. Okay her Gran was more trouble especially with her views on reincarnation and the supernatural meaning that she can't do anything about the mouse stealing her pastries as according to Gran he was Family. However news in the press has upset her. How could anyone think that the old tour guide (deceased at thr scene of a theft) was a thief? Add a gift from her father, a murder of a friend, a cemetery, two slightly ditsy friends, a ghost and a gold coin found in a crypt. Not to forget the handsome detective and the newly inherited cat. Can she, her friends and Gran work out who killed her friend? Will they be able to catch the killer in a sting?

Rylee Spencer does not believe in anything paranormal like her parents and grandma do. Grandma believes a mouse is the reincarnation of a great uncle and Rylee’s parents take trips to haunted graveyards and other locations. While her parents are on another trip, Rylee is left running the family store and keeping an eye on grandma. She is in for the shock of her life when a birthday present is delivered and it zaps her. The next thing Rylee knows, she can see the ghost of a recently murdered Founders Day committee member and finds herself racing against the clock to find out who murdered her friend.

This book is filled with lots of humor, madcap adventure, a hint at a possible romance, quirky & eccentric characters, mystery, and a number of twists and turns. It is a cozy mystery that readers will find light and entertaining. A perfect poolside read for the summer.

What a marvelous aray of caracters surrounding this mystery so vibrant and challenging. Rylee is an amazing young woman working in a unique shop with her gran and they couldn't be more alike and unlike. Until Rylee gets zapped with a spirit communicate. When there are not one but two murders in town Rylee is on the case with the help of one of the spirits trying solve not one murder but two while doing her job and volunteer work for an upcoming town festival. Rylee Spencer lives in Cumberpatch Cove where pirates rule. Tourists love to visit because of the legends that pirates supposedly buried treasure someplace in the area. Her father believes in the supernatural while she is a skeptic. She gets a quick tutorial on the spirit world though when she receives an early birthday present from her father who is on vacation. Things get stranger when a resident is murdered, so Rylee & her friends decide to start investigating. After sending a group that had attached themselves to Rylee’s group to a different area, Rylee & her group start their real search for clues. After putting her plan in action Rylee finally gets the closure she had wished for.

Rylee works in the family store, Mysterious Baubles, located in the tourist town of Cumberpatch Cove, known for its namesake, a notorious pirate. Residents boast that Martin Cumberpatch haunts the town searching for his lost treasure. The annual Founder’s Day weekend events may be in jeopardy due to theft and murder, and Rylee is haunted by the whole mystery. This is the first novel I have read by Nola Robertson and I enjoyed the humor and quirky characters.

Rylee works for her parents at their paranormal and all things strange...and pirate like...and is not a believer in the supernatural. That is until she gets her birthday present and then sees the ghost of her murdered friend. With the help of her friends and grandmother, they work on solving the murder so her friend can Rest In Peace.

I loved this first book in the series. I can already see that it’s going to be great and can’t wait for more!

An extremely funny book in wich Rylee has to cope with great-great uncle Howard who according to her Granny lives in their shop as reincarnation of a mouse and steals her muffins. And if that is not enough her father is deeply involved in everything paranormal and magic she and her friends try to solve a murder or two.

Lets not forget that Rylee can see and communicate with the ghost of Jessica and tries with the help of her friends Jade and Shawna (and Granny of course) to solve Jessica's murder. That she "inherits" sweet Barley in the process is the cherry on the cake.

What happens when your entire family believes in various supernatural things, have a shop selling such stuff, and you don't believe at all but then you get an amulet that gives you the ability to talk to ghosts? Unfortunately, the ghost happens to that of a murdered friend. Add a dash of being a suspect, a handsome detective, a long list of suspects, and a well-drawn plot and you get Death and Doubloons. Set is a town named after a pirate, filled with fun characters, and a mystery gives the reader a fun ride. I recommend the book.

Loved Grams!!
What’s a non-believer to do when science and logic does not answer the question. That is what Raylee faces in this cool cozy! There are great characters in this one and I love the name of the town Cumberpatch Cove. One thing is sure that Raylee needs to be careful when she gets a gift. Loved the book looking forward to more! I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it

Rylee gets zapped by her birthday gift from her father, and now can see ghosts. A hot new detective arrives in town to investigate a murder and Rylee ends up a suspect. With the help of her friends she investigates the murder. I found this book to be funny. I love how many people ending up helping Rylee investigate. There was no cursing, sex scenes, very clean book. This one has everything, paranormal, a friendly ghost, and a couple murders.

For Rylee to go from a non believer in her family occult obsession, to suddenly seeing ghosts after a birthday present from her parents. Now as a prime suspect in a murder, she'll need all the help she can get to prove the detective Logan wrong. Add in a cute kitty and great friends, and her grandma, creating an adventure leading to a good end. Looking forward to see how the story line continues.

Loved the book

Join Rylee and her friends as they try to figure out who killed Lyle and Jessica, along the way Rylee manages to ge able to see Jessica's ghost and adopts her cat Barcley, with her Grandmother insisting that the mouse in the shop is really the reincarnation of her great, great uncle Howard and the paranormal club getting involved as well it turns out to be an interesting investigation.

Why is it when it comes to things like gold and jewels, things go horribly wrong and ends with death? Money and treasure are never worth it and if it can't be helped, people ended up dead. It's nice to see a character get introduced into the story (along with a budding romance between the main character and the new character coming into town). I'm sure things will get heated between Rylee and Logan romantically as well as the mysteries around Cumberpatch Cove and I can't wait.

Very Well-written

Not easy to figure out the murderer. An interesting story with quirky small town characters. Rylee is a woman who has charge of her parents'shop while they are on a cruise. She receives a package from her father and it contains a magical item that zaps her and she can see and communicate with the ghost of her murdered friend. A really great story; can hardly wait for the next book in this new series..

If you can't touch it, it's not real.... or is it?

Rylee is very pragmatic and scientific. When she gets zapped by a gift from her father, all of a sudden she can see ghosts.

This was a very funny book, well-written and with terrific characters. I will definitely want to read more by this author.

Cute and quirky. This my first read by this author and it was a good one. Poor Jessica couldn’t catch a break, while alive or as a spirit, but she had wonderful friends who came through for her. Logan surprised me and I hope there is a love connection in a future book.

I really enjoyed this book and I loved Rylee and her friends. I hope that this is the start of a long series with her and Logan. The premise was very interesting and I can’t wait to read more about the characters and how much they grow from book to book. Great job on a new series. 👍👍👍

A little quirky, a little fun and wrapped up tight in a murder mystery with ghosts, pirates and a cat. Plus a bonus mouse of a reincarnated great great uncle who loves to steal food and cause havoc. Wonderful characters, a bit of magic and some paranormal. A new to me author and I already bought 4 books lol. If you like something a bit different then this is worth a read.
